Power Windows and Hold Your Fire are my two favourite albums for those kick ass songs ! Turn The Page, Lock And Key, Prime Mover, Force Ten... the rest is so damn hot too !
On December 24 at 8:00 in the morning a young 14 year old boy by the name of scott Johnson was found died. Doctors couldn't come up with the cause of his death. His mother checked his email to seeif she could figure out what happened. Turns out he was still signed into myspace. She found he had gone to sleep after he read and didn't repost a chain letter. If you don't repost this to six videos a girl with no face will kill you tonight. Sorry don't want to die!
Weird, when I listen to Rush 80s like Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, it sounds like if Yes stayed more progressive than they did during this time. Rush seems to better combined the 80s and progressive sounds more authentically to me since they were truly experimenting with synths and electronics instead of following a trend.
Geddy's bass line in the verse is f****** genius! Like that wasn't enough he manage to sing without breaking a sweat aswell. You gotta' love the man, slappin' da bass!
Like Rush or not....there is NO denying they are a class act. Look up pure talent and it should just have a picture of these 3 guys. Been a fan since high school...1984!
@Clasico2350 im only familiar with zeps bb c sessions and how the wst was won. rush has all the worlds a stage, exit stage left, show of hands, different stages, rush in rio , and snakes and arrows live. all the worlds a stage is so powerful and energetic and exit stage left is well played with each song intertwining w/ the next. rush played a bigger influence in my life because they were still going strong and had that sound i fell in love with. agreed both bands awesome!!
@sariglenn ive heard some live zep albums and dont get me wrong who doesnt like led zep. but plants voice isnt that good live and they really werent into marketing live albums so im gonna say zeps studio albums way out class their live albums
Dear Rush, bring these songs to your setlist: Mystic Rhythms Xanadu Turn The Page Second Nature Tai Shan Mission Force Ten The Analog Kid Losing It and Fly By Night thank you, Gary2112
I know alot of hoard core fans didn't take to Rush's writing style in the mid 80's, I personally liked Power Windows and Hold Your Fire very much. To me it showed that they were able to bring solid, tight. musicanship and composition to variations of their music.....and beside the fact it still rocks! Turn the Page, Marathon and many others are standout live performanes. .
Another thing about Rush that is always been interesting to me is how they have never, in all of their career, never added any additional players...Geddy, Alex, and Neil are Rush, and I'd say that is good enough.
In my opinion, Hold Your Fire is some of Geddy's best bass playing. With the guitar and synthesizer creating so many textures, the bass lines carry much of the album. Great stuff.
I really like this live version of turn the page. I was not a huge fan of Hold Your Fire originally. Over the years I have grown to like it more and more. I felt the sanme way about Grace Under Pressure at one point. Now I like that one too. Just took a little time to marinate I guess.
bongobassman: I would love to get my hands on Geddy's Wal. While it doesn't have the bottom-end that I usually like, I think the way the middle register cuts through the mix is just pure awesomeness.
I remember reading an interview with Geddy where he said that singing and playing bass lines as "busy" as this one required him to basically rehearse the bass line to the point that it became almost robotic so that he could focus on singing.
Geddy is a master, dtsilva66 your so right, play the bass, sing and keyboards and the bass pedals. Some of the other singers can barely get on stage, LOL. This is the greatest band ever.
It is because of this performance that I decided that I eventually will own a Wal bass. I just love the way that it "cuts" through. Heck, you can almost hear his fingertips coming off the strings; it's so clear and crisp. Although I enjoy his present sound with the Fender (I do have one of those, and it rocks!), I wish he would bring the Wal out again from time to time...
Man I wish Geddy would go back to playing that Wal bass...that tone from Power Windows through Hold Your Fire was incredible. The Fender just doesn't match up man.
@redwonder : The main reason he doesn't is that the Wal company doesn't exist anymore.
And as one who likes Fender Bass sounds (Chuck Rainey, Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, etc.) I'll be polite and say I beg to differ with your sentiment.
@dtsilva66 I used to play and sing this song in my old band. The funny thing is that the bass line in the second verse is easier to play than in the first, but way harder to sing over. The first verse is easy once your hands remembe rthe patterns, but that bass groove in the second verse is totally contrary.
@dtsilva66 Geddy Lee has said that it takes him quite a long time to be able to do both at the same time with each song, and that he struggled especially with Turn the Page, so it's mostly practice, with a healthy dose of talent.
YEAH! IT IS MAN. I love that album. It's my favorite too, next to Power Windows. It's Synthisizers that make the tingles erupt. They are just too darn good.
I agree that "Hold your fire" is one of of best written albums in history. Every song is composed just right for the lyrics. Great live performance....!!!!!
Geddy Lee was the pretty busy with the keyboard......thats why he stood back from the synth a little in the next album....PRESTO.
Uh, no. The lyrics on "Turn The Page" and "Lock And Key" make me cringe, as well as a few other songs (e.g. "Virtuality").
I like every Rush album, but almost all have one or two songs that I can rarely listen to. The only "complete" albums for me (not you, for me) are "Signals", "Vapor Trails", and "Snakes And Arrows", though I'm not counting "Feedback" since they were covers.
For the record, I'm a Centennial kid who has liked Rush since 1974.
Ha. Just spotted myself in this at 1.30 standing behind those guys jumping up and down. They spent the entire gig like that. 21 years later they still piss me off ;0) So if you're reading this guys...
The way Geddy plays and sings at the same time, for example at 0:20, is really impressive. Everybody talks about how great he is at bass, but I really thinks he deserves more attention for just being a great overall musician. Way to go, Mr. Lee. Take a bow.
I bought this CD a couple of years ago and did not care much for it at first, but then a couple of months ago i found the CD in the back of my car and gave it a second listen and realized how great it is, its funny how rush songs just grow on you over time.
What an extraordinary song. Its a wonder that this band isn't recognized for how much better they are than the Rolling Stones, Guns'n'Roses, and MANY OTHERS.
I remembered that I stayed up late as shit one night at my dads apartment on a school night watching this... we had gone to a WWF wrestling shit earlier... I then watched married with children and fell asleep... if i had a time machine i would go back to that night and undo all the wrong in my life that has happened since that seemingly innocent night... wtf? god hates us all... call me.
Obviously fender gibs is not a true Rush fan...when i went to see rush for the snakes tour... their were so many posers...and wise cracks claiming they loved rush....but they didnt know shit about good songs like turn the page...fendergibs i recommend u be alil more open minded for all music and not just songs that u think are boring
only a true genius could write a bassline like that AND sing at the same time AND trigger samples with his feet at the same time AND somehow not manage to fuck up
alot of people think yyz is the best bass song and it is way up there but if u think about it this is also one of the hardest bass lines and geddy is singing at the same time(and very very well i may add =))
If you ever compare a Wal next to a Jazz, as I have had the oppurtunity to do, you will quickly understand why he chose that particular bass for these recordings...Wal basses have a very unique "quiet" tone to them, meaning string noise is almost dead with the atack of the finger. Jazz, on the other hand, have a most noticeable sensitivity to even the slightest touch. Even though all of these things can be altered pre and post amp,it mainly depends on the source of the signal, which is the bass.
I've had the opportunity too, and I'd stay with a Jazz Bass. The Wal is great to jam around and do cool mid-pitched stuff, but the JB gives that enviroment you expect from a good bass, it gives that soul to your song. I have to say that my comparison was with an american deluxe jazz bass, I might like the Wal bass better than the regular Geddy one. It is hard to get that tone that Geddy has with his Fender.
Don't you like the tone of his Wal? I love it... but not as much as his Fender tone in the last three tours, Snakes and Arrows Jazz Bass tone is blasting.
When we talk about the recordings, I totally agree with you, the tone Geddy got for his recordings in permanent waves, hemispheres and a farewell to the kings are my favorite, all made with the Ricky. But, when we talk about the live performances, the tone from Rush in Rio, R30 and Snakes and Arrows are my favorite, all with Fender. Not to forget how much I love the tone he got with the Wal for "A show of hands".
I'm not too sure...the sound quality for Rio was total shit compared to ther live stuff they did. But Exit Stage Left and All the Worlds a Stage (and some bootlegs like The Fifth Order of Angels) were great sounding. This is just my opinion though.
it belew me aweigh, it bellowed it brawled, it was the wall of sound that emulations strived for. the bellows and the mellow forced tense incomprehensible. category 4 my arse. wind tunnel.
The tone of his Wal is great, but I personally prefer his Exit Stage Left Rickenbacker tone. Fat, growly ,and rings like a piano. That's the tone I love. :D
3:34 *face blows off from awesomeness*

@sariglenn I saw Rush too, 5 times.
Zep, just once in 2007 - London,
But I don't know of any other band that made their songs over 30 minutes live, like Dazed and Confused, No Quarter and Moby Dick.
Robetr's voice was awesome live, especially in 1972 - 1973.
But Geddy's voice is incredible too. Rush triggers an inexplicable psychosis in a good way.
The first time that I heard the first 2 seconds of Tom Sawyer live, I was close to tears. Still couldn't believe.
Both Bands are amazing.

This is the song that WOKE ME UP as a kid. It's funny I'm still waking up to things...it'll never end until it's over. Thanks RUSH.

The way Geddy plays and sings at the same time, for example at 0:20, is really impressive. Everybody talks about how great he is at bass, but I really thinks he deserves more attention for just being a great overall musician. Way to go, Mr. Lee. Take a bow.

Epic bassline

I bought this CD a couple of years ago and did not care much for it at first, but then a couple of months ago i found the CD in the back of my car and gave it a second listen and realized how great it is, its funny how rush songs just grow on you over time.

I got really high and watched this last night.
All I could think of was Geddy standing out front, raising his eyebrows in time with the lyrics and saying "yeah, that line's good!"

What an extraordinary song. Its a wonder that this band isn't recognized for how much better they are than the Rolling Stones, Guns'n'Roses, and MANY OTHERS.
RAPCAT60 3 years ago 2
Why would i recognize them for that . . . I recognize all three of them for the great music they give me . . .
rodog69 3 years ago
If I didn't recognize their music i wouldn't be watching the video. The answer to your question is obvious.
RAPCAT60 3 years ago
I remembered that I stayed up late as shit one night at my dads apartment on a school night watching this... we had gone to a WWF wrestling shit earlier... I then watched married with children and fell asleep... if i had a time machine i would go back to that night and undo all the wrong in my life that has happened since that seemingly innocent night... wtf? god hates us all... call me.

How can he play that and sing AT THE SAME TIME :O:O:O
I can hardly play the bassline itself without getting hand cramp!!!
The simple explanation of course is that he is GOD!
BenandAdriansWorld 3 years ago 4
I love how he sings the doubled vocals at the end of the song

Obviously fender gibs is not a true Rush fan...when i went to see rush for the snakes tour... their were so many posers...and wise cracks claiming they loved rush....but they didnt know shit about good songs like turn the page...fendergibs i recommend u be alil more open minded for all music and not just songs that u think are boring
yugixyuki 3 years ago
went to 5 shows 1985 via 1990, bought 10 records most on vinyl (sounds better)....what is a real fan ??? one that agrees with everything rush does???

only a true genius could write a bassline like that AND sing at the same time AND trigger samples with his feet at the same time AND somehow not manage to fuck up

adrian5b 3 years ago
Somewhere in Britain if I remember correctly. Don't quote me though.

I agree: Geddy is non-human. He is a GOD.

GOD...this video was so GOOD!
I gotta score it...if I can. Never forgot it.
mcul2112 3 years ago
alot of people think yyz is the best bass song and it is way up there but if u think about it this is also one of the hardest bass lines and geddy is singing at the same time(and very very well i may add =))

Even though all of these things can be altered pre and post amp,it mainly depends on the source of the signal, which is the bass.
candyfeend 3 years ago
I've had the opportunity too, and I'd stay with a Jazz Bass. The Wal is great to jam around and do cool mid-pitched stuff, but the JB gives that enviroment you expect from a good bass, it gives that soul to your song. I have to say that my comparison was with an american deluxe jazz bass, I might like the Wal bass better than the regular Geddy one. It is hard to get that tone that Geddy has with his Fender.
adrian5b 3 years ago
If he should have stuck with and of his basses, he should have kept playing Rickenbackers!
burningxdimx 3 years ago
The albums where he used his Ricky and Steinberger were some of their best. Not that his Jazz bass and Wal aren't good, but those were his best.
KaoKun1990 3 years ago
Don't you like the tone of his Wal? I love it... but not as much as his Fender tone in the last three tours, Snakes and Arrows Jazz Bass tone is blasting.
adrian5b 2 years ago 3
I love the Wal, but Geddy and the 4001 and 4080?
Nothing better.
burningxdimx 2 years ago
When we talk about the recordings, I totally agree with you, the tone Geddy got for his recordings in permanent waves, hemispheres and a farewell to the kings are my favorite, all made with the Ricky. But, when we talk about the live performances, the tone from Rush in Rio, R30 and Snakes and Arrows are my favorite, all with Fender. Not to forget how much I love the tone he got with the Wal for "A show of hands".
adrian5b 2 years ago
I'm not too sure...the sound quality for Rio was total shit compared to ther live stuff they did. But Exit Stage Left and All the Worlds a Stage (and some bootlegs like The Fifth Order of Angels) were great sounding. This is just my opinion though.
burningxdimx 2 years ago
Don't you love the tone Geddy got for Leave that thing alone live in rio? kickass stuff ^^
adrian5b 2 years ago
Like it, But By-Tor and the Snow Dog from ESL blows it out of the water.

it belew me aweigh, it bellowed it brawled, it was the wall of sound that emulations strived for. the bellows and the mellow forced tense incomprehensible. category 4 my arse. wind tunnel.

dude... everyday we're standing in a time capsule, why don't you turn the page?!
adrian5b 2 years ago
The tone of his Wal is great, but I personally prefer his Exit Stage Left Rickenbacker tone. Fat, growly ,and rings like a piano. That's the tone I love. :D
