The day games developers and consumers realize they're being manipulated by Microsoft's forced implementation of DirectX and start using OpenGL is the day that Linux and Mac take the lead. Linux does everything but gaming better and that's ONLY because of DirectX. Google and read: Wolfire OpenGL DirectX
On top of that last comment, I gotta say... if anyone's making fun of Microsoft's influence here.... did anyone see the episode of Modern Family wherein the guy spends the entire episode praising the iPad? Made me physically ill after the first 10 minutes and I haven't watched that show since.
Windows Vista SP3... er, 7.. removed XP and installed it on an older PC based on reviews that said it performed equally as well where Vista didn't. They're all wrong. Games performance is down the tubes. -10-15 FPS on average, and that's with Aero disabled. Pretty frustrating.
Point being: Stick with XP unless you're running a quad-core and at least 4GB of DDR2/3. Runs OK on my newer PC, but I have to wonder how said newer PC would do with XP. I can live without forced DirectX 10/11.

You're just talking about the user interface. 7 is much smoother, more stable and powerful than ever before - there's lots of performance changes under the hood that you can't replicate with a bit of window dressing.

Been running it on an external boot hard drive and inside a virtual machine (WinXP x64 host) since the Beta was released (currently using an RTM). It **should** have been Vista SP3, but M$ wouldn't be able to sell it, or named "Fixta." M$ stripped out utilities XP and Vista had, and crippled user interface customization features. Only reason I've used it is to learn how to support it on other folks' machines.
