  • I partecipated to a project like this :) Very interesting to see it 6 years after from google. :)

  • Forget about busting down on Google for them wanting to know EVERYTHING about you... So What? Bring together all of their development, and notice how it's meant to help YOU in YOUR life.

  • Just because someone is willing to dumb it down so the owner can easily control their own home doesn't mean that your information was not already accessible. You should thank them for giving the little people voices to reach out to the rest of the world.

    Thank You Google.

  • First off if you want to judge Google then you should talk to anyone that works for them. You'll learn the most about a company from how they treat their employees. If you think all of your information is not already accessible then you are not as smart as you think. Your water bill, energy bill.. all of it is easily take by anyone who has the motive to do it. Regardless, this invention comes from the employees that get to contribute to the company, and the rest of our world.

  • If THEY cannot measure it,

    They cannot carbon tax it.

  • I'd be willing to do this not for the energy saving part but just to have a reliable chart of how much energy is used.

  • AMAZING

  • I don't care I'm going to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and when google knocks on my door I'm going to sock them in the face.

  • This is great, I got an Envi from forward energy solutions, it is a featured device for powerMeter, with the two resources together it is awesome

  • Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready to shave my head and go Nike shopping. Hey, has anyone seen my purple scarf? I left it right over the jar with what's left of my... oh, never mind. It was in my pocket. ;-)

  • humlooking for some fun if you know what i mean just msg meh

  • All a setup for Cap & Trade taxes.

  • Takamasaoe-san The api for the device google uses to take the data from the powerlines to the internet is open source. That means that a Japanese software engineer could build their own Google Power Meter in Japanese for the net. Then they could pay for it with Google adsense from Google adwords on the internet power meter access. Then Google, the power user and the environment would be happy. I wonder if the power companies in Japan would be happy?

  • 日本も早くこういったビジネスを展開しやすい環境が整って欲しい。この取り組みが進むことによって他のサービス展開は一気に加速するんだろうな。

  • I wonder how many people in Bay Area are accessing their hourly interval data from PG&E Smart Meters. This info is now easily available. I bet it is less than 1%. People don't care. More than 90% of the people simply pay their bills and no amount of data mining is going to change anything. Rituals will last for ever. Majority of people will not go around powering off their appliances when the savings are less than 30 cents per night.

  • i think this is silly for house purpose but good for industry...my ug proj itsself a amr using sms as communictn....who will provide a broadband for every meter....

  • With the ability to improve comes the responsibility of control. If you can control something your motives should / must be altruistic either for or against the served by that control. Do you Trust Google?

  • google is skynet lul

  • All of this information regarding energy consumption could be consolidated in a one page user manual for consumers. Anything that is plugged into the wall and produces heat uses a lot of power. If the business owners in the US would just adjust their thermostats up by a degree or two we would eliminate all of this automation investment overnight. Why do I have to wear a jacket to have dinner indoors in Phoenix in July?

  • How is "Chad after dentist" a related video to Google Powermeter? lol

  • why not hook up a smart meter to my bank account it would only make sense to give the government money when they needed it without having to wait!!ohh and then traffic I could have a traffic light in my driveway that would tell me when to leave!!

  • well google wants to know EVERYTHING about you

  • So what if they do?

  • hate the fuckin music. idea is in germany already available (EnBW)

  • when is it going to be released?

  • awesome idea kudos google

  • neat

  • You're an idiot. OooooOOoohhh the government is out to get yooouuuuu!!! So scary! I'd be more concerned about them having free access to our phone calls and email (which they openly do already).

So the government knows when i dry my clothes or cook dinner... what a scary thought!!!

  • Nice words!

  • Did anyone else noticed they were all foreigners aswell? :P

  • I never really thought about it until you mentioned it... but i DID notice that you're a racist immediately! What the hell does their ethnicity have to do with them being American? Remember, at some point in the last 3-400 years your relatives were foreigners!

  • Thats not beeing racist, its having a sharp eye: besides, im not saying that they suck because they are foreigners.. just that they ARE!

And tbh, dutch people arent really foreigners, knowing we lived here before America was even discovered.. might wanna get your facts straight.

  • no, your observation was that they're not white. which is both meaningless and racist in this context... why not comment on the fact that none of them are over 60? cause it's equally meaningless in this context.

"dutch people aren't really foreigners"... if they're "dutch", then by definition they ARE foreigners, ie, they're from the netherlands. maybe YOU want to get your facts straight.

  • great idea ...

  • Brilliant Google - joined up thinking - whoopee!

  • and how they first measured it when they invented circular wheel?

  • love google

  • To use this you must have a smart meter on the outside of your house (the thing with the spinning disk unless it's digital) . Google's app reads data from these meters and displays it in your browser. If you don't have a smart meter or your utility company doesn't offer then you're out of luck.

A similar thing already exists in a product called The Energy Detective (TED) which you install inside your breaker panel. The TED software shows usage on a per-second basis and is really helpful.

  • Man, you sure do learn a lot from watching youtube! haha It's true. That's why I like it! but this is an absolutely a favorite now haha

  • amazing vid!

  • Of course. Clearly, if McCain had won, Google would have immediately stopped all of its projects, shut its doors, and ceased to exist.

    *rolls eyes*

  • Wow... I guess that flew right over your head.

  • This video made me smile =)

  • Google one step closer to world domination O_o

  • @LibyanRio LOL :-)

  • @LibyanRio Thats a future I look forward to :-)

  • @LibyanRio i LOVE google, and no one forced you to contribute!!

  • i love google. sniffle sniffle. best company ever.

  • Here's a novel idea: Since what we think, verbalize & put energy into is what our reality becomes, it would be amazing to see what Google and other progressive positive thinking people / companies could accomplish through their desire to help our world be a better place to live.

  • Yay Google! One step closer to running everything in our daily lives.

  • So we save energy by...turning on our computers to see how much power we are using...lol

  • you turn off your computer?

  • You can turn off a computer?

  • Turning my computer off at the socket (through power bars) when I'm not using it saved me enough on my electricity bills to buy a cheap server which itself operates on low-power mode (it doesn't need any peripherals; I just ssh to do anything with it). It does everything my main tower (an upper-middle-end gaming rig) was doing overnight or when I'm at work, at a fraction of the cost in energy and bills. (Why power a video card when I'm not playing?)

You'd be amazed how much of an impact it has.

  • TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER!

  • what's the title of the song?

    Thanks!

  • Will this software be able to handle my meter running backwards because of photovoltaic cells?

  • I think that would be a good promotion for people to see a negative usage... maybe in a green instead of traditional red.

  • advert

  • Anyone know if google are just talking to US suppliers or are they talking to suppliers in nother countries?

  • is this some kind of hardware or software or what is it ?

  • Check the website; there's an FAQ. This is a software program that reads networked power meters (devices that plug in to your house's energy meter or outlets; a primitive but consumer-ready example would be the Kill-A-Watt) and presents the insight-esque graph.

Their website has more information. It's not available to the public yet, sadly.

  • I can see a dark side to this, since no good deed goes unpunished.

  • duh of course. google is an advertising firm. they give us really cool apps like maps and calendar and in turn they make money through pay per click. that's fine by me.

  • I was more thinking of the power companies-we monitor our useage, save money, and what do they do to maximize their profit?

  • So then don't use it if you don't like it...... and just pay more for your electric bill every month.

  • it would be awesome to have an insight-like graph to keep a much closer eye on energy saving

  • Great !... :

We might use it in our project (submitted to Google Project 10100, as power from Gravity ..) . thnks.

  • There is an hardware energy meter provided by Google? or.. how I can send to Google info about my consumption?

  • sounds awesome!

    power to the people!

  • oh pun!
