AVH is extremely under-rated. Don't believe it?? Get GDT, slow down the songs Hot 4 Teacher or Jump (as well as many other VH songs), and try to play it CORRECTLY yourself. That shit is not easy, nor "common" grooves. AVH is one of the BEST in his genre.
Actually when I go to a concert I don't wear ear plugs (unless EVHs speaker cabinets are 4 feet from me then Im in trouble!) Being a drummer myself when I'm playing a gig its of paramount importance that I wear ear plugs!! Like AVH, drummers are stuck in the one position and are subjected to the loud snare, cymbals & foldback monitor volumes the whole gig...plus AVH uses heavy weighted cymbals too, which add extra volume!! But they sound great which it most important!!
I play drums too. Hearing protection has been a big struggle for me. I want to protect my ears, but if I muffle the sound with plugs or phones during a gig, I am not as sensitive to the music and I tend to play too loudly. Mixed sound through isolation headphones is the best solution, but not always possible. I wear 29 decibel phones when I practice because I hit very very hard.
Mate I use the industry type ear plugs that block out almost 70% of the volume!! I've tried all sorts of plugs, phones etc, but none of them worked, in fact some actually did more harm than good! At first it was hard to play with, but over time I got used to it and my ears are in great condition!! Your right in one sense that you tend to play louder but over time you settle down and it becomes second nature!
I gotta say AVH is swinging it!!! He is playing the best I've heard him to date. The guy doesn't get the credit he rightfully deserves yet he's in a league all his own!! The guy's got some serous chops to burn, but he plays them so tastefully and in the right places. Maybe ever since Wolfie joined the band AVH has changed for the better...Alex is one serous groove player something he's not know for in the past...can't wait for the new album, don't make us wait too long guys!!
If you were in front of me talking like this, I would break your nose. That's why you sit behind a keyboard talking shit, because in real life you are a pussy.
what band do you play for? it must be some fag generic punk rock/ hardcore band. better yet, you probably don't even have a band because you're a worthless music critic that sits on his computer all day in his parents basement eating funions and drinking mountain dew and comments on youtube videos because you don't have half the talent as anyone you comment on.
anyone can make it out that they play the drums if they have a couple of hours practise before hand on a crusti drum kit in the garage, drum solos suck ass, all a good drummer shud do is keep the beat, look at the beatles for example, not as if ringo was the best was it
anybody that thinks he's limited,or his fills sound the same, are full of shit, plain and simple......tony and ronald are damn good, but are liteweights, really, compared to the mighty alex.GOOD Double bass is the hallmark of a awesome drummer, such as baker and bonham, wich are alex's influence;tony and ronald are very litewieght when it comes to double bass, and for that reason shouldn't even be mentioned on the same page as Alex..if you can't handle the power, stay away before you get hurt
Even though it's 40 yrs old, Ginger Baker's "Toad" on Wheels of Fire, for my money is still the best thing done on double bass. No tricks, just well done exciting music. Listen to it !!
You could plug any other metal drummer into this video and you'd hardly know the difference. Triplets using double bass and an endless series of fills that sound the same don't blow me away. Check out Tony Royster jr or Ronald Bruner jr if you want to see some animals on the drums. If not that's cool too as I'd never expect a death metal fan to see it that way and you're more than entitled to your opinion. Drumming is about more than just speed and those fusion drummers are insanely fast anyway.
WOW!!!! Bonham plays this on one bass drum and one bass pedal in his sleep. Bonham is the best rock drummer of all time! Alex is a good drummer but he is not an Icon like Bonham.
and what drug are you on asswipe? you rank right up there when it comes to stupidity. alex van halen would and could mop john bonhams limey ass all over the the drum kit.
ALex Van Halen is absolutely amazing But neil peart is by far the greatest in my lifetime. Back in 1984 interview on MTV Alex admitted that "compared to Neil, he is not even in the same universe." He admitted that Neil was a much better drummer but Alex is awesome. Ive seen Both alex and neil in concert and neil is just simply more amazing. Oh yeah and Travis Barker sucks.......
well stated!! AVH is known better as a phenomenal drummer for what he brought to rock music than his actual abilities. he's very good, but there are many others way better. nevertheless, AVH is a drumming legend because of what he brought to rock.
I've always liked Alex - plays circles around a lot of the popular metal drummers these days (tho he's obviously not as impressive as he was when he first appeared on the scene).
People often forget that he builds most of the drums he plays.
no hes not bet alex cudent sit on his kit for 30 minsand doa drum solo like john bonham john bonham did the longest solo in precusion history and thers no way that alex is beter dan bonham
Hmm, pretty average, IMO. Double bass drumming is garbage, and there is no use of any technique in this guy's playing. I guess I'd even call it below average, considering that a lot of people consider this guy the king of rock drumming.
I am far from being the biggest Van Halen fan, but I think that Alex is one of the most underrated drummers ever. I guess he he might just be lost in the mix-with Eddie being such a good guitarist, but he is at least as good at his instrument as Eddies is at his.

Peart don't play doubble bass half as good as Alex does, and peart(along with everybody else) doesn't sound as good as Alex does..I fail to see( or hear) all this Technique, that peart is supposed to posses;there's about a half dozen player's that are better than peart....Alex is the man,....He TOTALLY ROCKS!!!! and would mop the floor with peart!!
u can't compare the two, they have radically diffrent styles, both are incredibly skilled drummers - though in terms of theory I'd suspect Peart would hav the edge due to his musical degree.
As a rock drummer Alex gets my vote as a prog rok drummer Neil gets my vote.
just because he doesn't play it in many of his songs, doesn't mean he can't. His hands alone would anihilate Alex, as good as alex is. Neil Peart is just overall more talented and plays a much broader range of music. and has the most tasteful beats i have ever heard.
Nobody SOUNDS as good as ALEX that's for sure! He's the BEST SOUNDING,and nobody can touch him there!!I'm not sure of Ian paice being in his league, but Ian paice NEVER sounded as GOOD as Alex!! John bonham comes the closest to alex as far as a good sounding kit,and technique goes.........both Alex and John had/have a great sound, unlike peart, who has a thin cheesy sound(and can't play his cymbals)
WHAT??????!!!!!!!!! Neil Peart's drums are some of the best sounding drums that i have ever heard. and he sure can play his cymbals he just doesn't smash them. The only time he has ever crash rided was in Spirit of the Radio and it was the most tasteful crash riding i have ever heard before. and his ride and hihat technique are amazing. For example, During the Free Will guitar solo and subdivisions. Alex will never play cymbals like the professor!
Alex van halen is one of the best drummers, like gregg bissonette, neil peart(Rush),lars ulrich(metallica), vinnie paul(pantera),pat torpey(mr. big), Mike Portnoy(dream theater). Alex V.H. is a legend.
this is 50% "toad" and 50% "moby dick." hell, even the head movements that he's making at 2:30 look like a straight up imitation of ginger baker from back in the day! but hey, talent borrows... and genius steals. this is a solid solo, but try and imagine art blakey or elvin on a 20-piece kit. now try and imagine alex van halen on a 4-piece kit...
Alex Van Halen in one of the greatest drummers that I have ever heard!!! It seems that we have an argument between people on this post.. Guys its crazy, how can; Nickleback, Deep Purple, and Van Halen even be in the same sentence? Comparing them is rediculous. That is like comparing Garth Brooks to Ice Cube..Whoever said Van Halen is talentless, i would sure like to see and hear them show me what talent is
Anyone who denies Alex Van Halen is a great drummer is a fool. To add sucking balls and what not to the statement reminds me that not only are there fools in this world but alot of jealous fools who suddenly believe they have mastered the art of online slagging and that their opinion is worthy. It isn't. Alex is doing a fine performance even if drummer_xyz is too. Take your flaps elsewhere for a decent mincing and take your sour comments to your boss.
Are you retarded? Your appreciation of van halen amuses me, considering their all talentless hacks who couldn't hold the cocks of Deep Purple at any moment in time in their mouths
So he can do what, swivel in his chair and continue to play the bass drum and hit more toms, or sit in one position and hit 20 less and still hand avh his ass?
yeah, at cocksucking, lets see him play or even write anything even remotely as good as Burn or Fireball, and take away those four bassdrums and give him one pedal
You got another Purple/Paice fan here. Get a load of this KID, talking that trash. You dig Van Halen, ok, but slam Paice and Purple? Go to your room, son, and don't come out 'till I tell you.
Anyone know how Alex gets his snare drum sound? He always had that great snare sound! I know he was a Ludwig player ... but that snare sound is awesome.
Yeah;you can always tell when van halen comes on the radio, because Alex has such a unique signature sound, some thing that I find lacking in all the other bands..............Also,when I listen to a Van Halen recording,I really get into that sound, and then as soon as I play something else,I find that sound is lacking, and most of the other stuff sounds weak, compared to Van Halen.............
Van Halen sureley has a signature sound that has send them to superstardom. I can give you the names of a few highly succesful bands that have an awesome signature sound. RUSH sticks in my head as the most recognizeable and signature drum sounds. even more so than Van Halen. Alex is an awesome player, but i find his solos to be less entertaining.
at medium tempo its the same thing over and over again!Alex has a better recorded drum sound then peart.alex has the meaty thunk snare!deeper kick drum. super shimmer hats and cymbal.most of alex's beats are boom boom tap
Peart kills him with more variety in his drum solo for sure pearts is more like a song it has structure!
beatsdddx;just by admitting alex sounds better is admission that he's better!ask yourself why doesn't peart play his cymbals in a solo;If peart is so great why can't he keep time with his cymbals, and why can't he play his cymbals with as much control and technique as Alex?.........Alex is faster than peart too, peart can't roll as fast as alex.........you guys like to talk trash about alex, when you really should be looking at what peart doesn't /can't do................Alex is the man
I have always appreciated his great musicianship and would also love to see him play the piano at some point (he is quite good apparently). Has anybody else noticed his uncanny resemblance to Mr Spock in Star Trek IV? No? Just me then.
You better take that back you worthless sack of shit. Ian Paice makes Alex Van Halen look like a 7 year old autistic boy with downsyndrome with stubs for arms. He's a fuckin hack, and to compare him to Paice just goes to show you are an ignorant asshole who should jump in front of a truck
he's up there at the top. he is fucking great at drumming, just listen to van halen: hot for teacher and you'll know hes amazing. he found usage of 4 bass drums. and used them all!!!
@ angelorichetti Just the thought of you comparing this washed up hack of a drummer to John Bonham is unbelievable. This guy has been riding his brothers coat tails is hole life and would have never made it as a real drummer anywhere. There's all kinds of professional drummers that would eat this guy up. Lets see how about Travis Barker and Omar Hakim, Dave Grohl, Neil Preat just to name a few.
Saw him last night at Staples Center. Completely agree. What amazed me most was how effortless he made it all look. Eddie and Alex were are both at the top of their game.
dude, are you kidding me, who cares how his tempo changes, his rhythem and rudements are what his skill comes from, obviously you weren't paying much attention to it.
"eddie's son is the bassist" True, and he's good, but I saw them in Worcester Mass, and he was boring on stage. Very shy. A little heavy. Just stood there like Entwistle, but without the chops.

Alex is a great drummer and Ian Paice is easily in his league if not better.

Take your flaps elsewhere for a decent mincing and take your sour comments to your boss.

my only beef is the hot for teacher solo!
he used so many drum overdubs! It sounds incredible but he cheated! It would take two drummers to play it live.He does have the
best studio recorded drum sound. But to play with eddie you gotta have skills!alex does not suck

Dude said nickelback lol...lol.lol.

Are you retarded? Your appreciation of van halen amuses me, considering their all talentless hacks who couldn't hold the cocks of Deep Purple at any moment in time in their mouths
TheBoondockSaints 4 years ago
So he can do what, swivel in his chair and continue to play the bass drum and hit more toms, or sit in one position and hit 20 less and still hand avh his ass?
TheBoondockSaints 4 years ago
yeah, at cocksucking, lets see him play or even write anything even remotely as good as Burn or Fireball, and take away those four bassdrums and give him one pedal
TheBoondockSaints 4 years ago
You got another Purple/Paice fan here. Get a load of this KID, talking that trash. You dig Van Halen, ok, but slam Paice and Purple? Go to your room, son, and don't come out 'till I tell you.

One of the most underrated drummers of all time!! It's a shame he doesn't get more praise!!

Anyone know how Alex gets his snare drum sound? He always had that great snare sound! I know he was a Ludwig player ... but that snare sound is awesome.
drummerkid71 4 years ago
Yeah;you can always tell when van halen comes on the radio, because Alex has such a unique signature sound, some thing that I find lacking in all the other bands..............Also,when I listen to a Van Halen recording,I really get into that sound, and then as soon as I play something else,I find that sound is lacking, and most of the other stuff sounds weak, compared to Van Halen.............
humbucker01 4 years ago
Van Halen sureley has a signature sound that has send them to superstardom. I can give you the names of a few highly succesful bands that have an awesome signature sound. RUSH sticks in my head as the most recognizeable and signature drum sounds. even more so than Van Halen. Alex is an awesome player, but i find his solos to be less entertaining.
HomesliceDrummer 4 years ago
Yes his solo is like 90% quadruplets where he's
left right with his hands and left right with
his feet.like. ta ta boom booom ta ta boom boom
at medium tempo its the same thing over and over again!Alex has a better recorded drum sound then peart.alex has the meaty thunk snare!deeper kick drum. super shimmer hats and cymbal.most of alex's beats are boom boom tap
Peart kills him with more variety in his drum solo for sure pearts is more like a song it has structure!
beatsdddx 4 years ago
beatsdddx;just by admitting alex sounds better is admission that he's better!ask yourself why doesn't peart play his cymbals in a solo;If peart is so great why can't he keep time with his cymbals, and why can't he play his cymbals with as much control and technique as Alex?.........Alex is faster than peart too, peart can't roll as fast as alex.........you guys like to talk trash about alex, when you really should be looking at what peart doesn't /can't do................Alex is the man
humbucker01 4 years ago
I have always appreciated his great musicianship and would also love to see him play the piano at some point (he is quite good apparently). Has anybody else noticed his uncanny resemblance to Mr Spock in Star Trek IV? No? Just me then.
Mafiawl 4 years ago
haha, thats hillarious. I didnt notice the resemblance until I read that.

wow he is probaly as good as paice
adrianjemond 4 years ago
You better take that back you worthless sack of shit. Ian Paice makes Alex Van Halen look like a 7 year old autistic boy with downsyndrome with stubs for arms. He's a fuckin hack, and to compare him to Paice just goes to show you are an ignorant asshole who should jump in front of a truck
TheBoondockSaints 4 years ago
well now, theres a good way to make a point. not that you really have one....

he's up there at the top. he is fucking great at drumming, just listen to van halen: hot for teacher and you'll know hes amazing. he found usage of 4 bass drums. and used them all!!!
ironmaidenno1 4 years ago
@ angelorichetti Just the thought of you comparing this washed up hack of a drummer to John Bonham is unbelievable. This guy has been riding his brothers coat tails is hole life and would have never made it as a real drummer anywhere. There's all kinds of professional drummers that would eat this guy up. Lets see how about Travis Barker and Omar Hakim, Dave Grohl, Neil Preat just to name a few.
So piss off.

one of the most skilful and under-rated drummers in rock ever, this solo only touches on what he's really capable of in my opinion.
svaran 4 years ago 2
Saw him last night at Staples Center. Completely agree. What amazed me most was how effortless he made it all look. Eddie and Alex were are both at the top of their game.

GREAT!! AWESOME: He sounds a lot better than peart,or carey.............the best ever.....!!
humbucker01 4 years ago
He's a very good drummer... the video quality is whats not so great.. but still thank you for posting this video
ZildjianDrummer244 4 years ago
Nothing special really. Hes not a bad drummer but not in the same plane as Neil Peart or Danny Carey.
cpinto72 4 years ago
cpinto72, I agree with you,he's not on the same plane as peart or carey:he's the next level up from them......thanks for pointing that out

He is not the best and never will be. He has 0 technique. He drums fast then slow, fast then slow, fast then slow and the he stops.
Big deal.
daddy431963 4 years ago
dude, are you kidding me, who cares how his tempo changes, his rhythem and rudements are what his skill comes from, obviously you weren't paying much attention to it.

that's Eddie van halen, alex is the drummer, and as of lately i think, eddie's son is the bassist
verratensie 4 years ago
"eddie's son is the bassist" True, and he's good, but I saw them in Worcester Mass, and he was boring on stage. Very shy. A little heavy. Just stood there like Entwistle, but without the chops.

Its about time that Alex gets some recognition - as a drummer I was floored by Hot for teacher - and remain FLOORED
it was one hell of an innovative piece of drum work!!!!!
