I think the nation of Islam also more or less told him to take the stand he took against the war, although it turned out to be a noble stance. Also note that he had to stop boxing in his prime so it took a huge sacrifice. He never would have had to fight in the war anyway; he would have just got a job entertaining the troops or something and been allowed to carry on his career. Instead he faced the real possibility of jail.

NBA and MLB aren't really popular or on TV that much around the world, except for some places. Jordan could fill a baseball stadium just by open batting practice. I think Ali is far greater than Jordan BUT I was mainly stating in my comment that Jordan too was an icon... Not as great as Ali but still an icon.

@oldschoolruler Thats a good point, but in a sense of domination, he dominated his sport the way Ali did his. When Ali was in his prime he was king, and when Jordan was in his prime he was king also. Jordan faced some really tough competition despite being sick, injured, playing out of position, etc. Yet somehow he always willed himself to win. Ali was the same way, when it wasn't looking good for him in the ring, he found a way to knock you out, lol.

I think the nation of Islam also more or less told him to take the stand he took against the war, although it turned out to be a noble stance. Also note that he had to stop boxing in his prime so it took a huge sacrifice. He never would have had to fight in the war anyway; he would have just got a job entertaining the troops or something and been allowed to carry on his career. Instead he faced the real possibility of jail.
