  • video is great, but how about a sound editor?

  • Nice video. Great stuff.

  • Hello, It is a nice video. I want t know is it legal to trawl the shrimp in your country? And what country is this?In our country, it is illegal to use trawl shrimp. Email me at Ariffinhb@yahoo.com

  • How far north do these shrimp go? Are there any in the NY area or they prefer warmer waters?

  • you guys have serious troubles with selectivity in your nets however you can fiz that detail and improve your catches, saving precious time and not wasting it in keep jellyfish from shrimps, good luck!

  • @snakesteve68 you're a fucking idiot. Have you ever been down there? There are so many of those fish that you think are being killed for no reason it has little to no effect on the Eco system besides you heard what he said it feeds many other animals!!! Keep eating shrimp pussy

  • If you stop buying shrimp, the price would go down and the people that don't care take advantage of the cheap prices.

  • what a waste of life.. at least let the live ones go that you aren't going to use.

  • i hate trawlers they are bad for marine life...kill the trawls!!!!

  • the strong survive. Shrimpers here almost have to sell shrimp at a store or retail. They have to use their heads. Have the old lady sell shrimp on the side of the road.

  • wow what a fucking waiste

  • trawling kills everything in its path

  • Yes, I now have a new appreciation for a hot shrimp dinner and also what the fisherman have to deal with on a daily basis. However, I am appalled at the amount of by-catch. The fact that so many creatures were killed for so few shrimp that was just enough to "break even" sickens me. Because of this video I have now decided to stop eating shrimp until a better way is found to manage our seas. I do not want to be in part responsible for the needless deaths of so many important creatures.

  • @snakesteve68 Good, more for everybody else, you treehugging idiot.

  • Great video! -TX

  • Man.... Is the profit a shrimper makes still in the shitter because of low priced imports?? Would you spend 5, or 10k on a shrimp boat for income if you were me hehe?

    Sucks if we shouldn't... F

  • son of a bitches killing all those fish if i did that the game warden would put me under the jail

  • thank you!

  • gr8 video ...thanks

  • Forgot to mention, those champagne baskets hold only 70 pounds, not 80.

  • Man, them deck hands need a picking table a shovel and a couple of tombos. Yall doin it Vietnamese style sittin on the deck like that. Come down to Louisiana and we will show you how to do it right.

  • @chedballz You would be surprised that a lot of boats still do it like this. I have been around shrimp boats all my life and not seen many people use picking tables. Its hell on the back though.

  • RUN FORREST, RUN!

  • thans for this video. all that bycatch/bykill for just enough shrimp to break even? there's got to be a better, cleaner way to get food to people. would shrimp pots work in this area? they are used elsewhere.

  • the by catch is one of the great concerns everyone has about shrimping and fishing. The shrimpers do what they can to minimize it but its a fact which is part of why aquaculture is looked at as one solution. It too has real problems, particularly as practiced in poor third world countries where people are so desparate they'll use any chemical they have to to raise production levels. The price of diesel is killing the industry along with the low price of imported shrimp.

  • @EMSkidmore A lot to do with it as wellis over fishing

  • Wow you have to kill alot of other stuff besides shrimp to get them. dont you get stung by the jelly fish too? and with the price of gas way up.. must be a hard to make a living doing this. wonder if theres a way to farm them?

  • You guys sure do kill a lot of shit!

  • Ok I'll get back at you.

  • to some extent it is, or perhaps more accurately an experience game. These guys have done it all their lives, they know the seasons and how things like heat and cold affect the shrimp. They know the area under the water they work. When they think there may be shrimp out there they go out and test, but they don't waste fuel just riding around. And, of course, DNR tests before opening the season... and y es there is a season, licenses, etc.

  • Ok, so how do you know were the shrimp are, is it just a guessing game?

What are the seasons? Do you need any sort of license to drive the boat and catch the shrimp. I didn't think that you needed a boating license to be a commercial fisherman.

  • I'm sure you can find an old timer who would hire on to crew and teach you. But the smart thing to do might be to hire on as crew yourself and see how you like it before making the investment. I think most Captains find a seafood company that contracts to take their catch. And the seafood companies in turn find a few restaurants tht will take a certain amount... the retail market is very uncertain and seasonal...

  • Oh yeah. And how do you sell the shrimp (if you know)?

  • Ok. Whenever I do this (a long time) how will I be able to learn how to operate the machinery? If I find a veteran fisherman do you think I could buy lessons from him?

Thanks again for all the help.

  • well there were two doors, one directly into the bridge and one into the galley/crew quarters. From the door to the bridge, or wheelhouse, to the stern was the bulk of the boat. So if I guessed the boat was 50' it would probably be 38' to the stern. The machinery sits right behind the cabin, then there is an area to dump the catch. The two main nets drag directly behind the boat, a smaller test net drags off to one side. Heavy winches pull the nets, the steel cables are very dangerous.

  • About how much room did they have from the door to the wheelhouse to the end of the boat?

  • no problem but I'm an old guy, I'll be hitting the sack soon, get back to you tomorrow... bud

  • Ok thanks. I may ask you some more questions if you dont mind.

  • you know I'm not sure but I think 50'

  • Oh, btw, about how long was the Sarah Jane?

  • Yeah I know fisherman usually dont make much money but I was just looking to buy one boat after I retire from the airlines and hire a few guys and go shrimping. I can't find anything on the internet about shrimping. How would I get a license, or learn to work the equipment?

  • The best thing you can do is come down to golden meadow, galliano louisiana around there and ask around to see if anyone needs help on there boat. Most people need help and will teach you eavry thing you need to know.

  • I've never known a shrimper to get rich, best thing you could do is come to Edisto for a few days and talk to the guys who do it. Jimmie Bell, Bobbi Fontain, Bill Smith, Vincent Flowers... they're all great guys and would give you straight information. But just look off any SE beach and you'll see the number of boats have dropped almost every year. That tells me no one is making much...

  • I've been lookin into shrimping after I retire from being a airline pilot.

About how much of a profit could you pull in on a annual bases?

  • hey man.... i would eat that whole basket!

  • really nice fishing place

  • Wow!Amazing video.

Im hunting a job on Alabama!

  • thanks, bud

  • Thanks EM! I appreciate that! Actually, I will be visiting Edisto for the first time in 25+ years. I lose count. I am so excited to show my boys my favorite vacation spot when I was young. My mom.. sister and I went to Edisto every year for years. I am looking forward to the trip. Easter is always a special time. I think Edisto is a special place to spend the easter Holiday.

  • Edisto is paradise. Hope we can keep it that way!

  • Oi!I live on Edisto too!Don't see as many shrimpers out anymore.

  • I think there are two or three that still work off Edisto. The Sarah Jane which is the one in my video, one run by Vincent Flowers which is quite small and docks up manse creek and one run by Jimmy Bell which is also fairly small. With the price of diesel only getting more expensive I don't anticipate any new ones coming along... hope I'm wrong. bud

  • Hi!

I have been on a shrimpboat before on Edisto and the experience was fantastic! I am worried about djlay57. This person seems to have an anger problem that I do not think has anything to do with shrimpboats. Feel better djay57. Instead of typing insults, what are you doing for the environment? I think your choice of words is pretty "lu-zer"

  • I try not to let unhappy people bother me. What he doesn't know is that I worry as much as he does about by catch and dragging nets across the ocean floor. But the fact is the alternative, pond raised shrimp from countries that use heavy doses of antibiotics are just or more damaging to the environment.

Eventually organic aquaculture will come but in the meantime a few boats are providing us with relatively clean fresh seafood which people need to eat. bud

  • Bud, I am sorry for speaking of that which I do no know the details. I know about the problems with meat and etc. ,,,I did not realize the problem with hormones, steroids etc was/is also in the ocean..I also did not know that there were shrimpers that did bad things..I should call myself..46 and uninformed! I do not let unhappy people affect me..usually!! LOL

  • actually I thank you for your comments, djlay57 was way out of line, bordering on spam. Totally inappropriate language. Glad you liked the video! bud
