Oss!
I'm not an expert and i would say far from it, but still I can see a few weaknesses in your bassai dai.
First, you don't finish your kata where you started it. Second, there's power in your moves, but they're not fluid enough and a little too fast. Third, you cannot have the correct breathing for this Kata with this speed.
Anyway, nobody's perfect, and we all need to improve all the time. Have a good training !
Your zencosadachi stances are good, nice and long BUT you kokasadachi(back stance) is very minimium and so it te kimae on your shuto(Knife hand block). Other wise I thought it was good =)
Can someone help me with Bassai Dai? I posted a video (me and Bassai Dai), and i need some tips, because it's not my best kata, and i want to improve him...
Nice, I'm learning this kata now just for tournaments and eventually my purple belt black stripe. Nice job too. I'm a Blue Belt and an intermediate in tournaments so I can't do any Heian or Taikyoku kata's.
I'm learning the kata too, but no two of the versions I've seen seem to match (and none of them match the one I'm being taught)! Guess every school has their own take on this one.
If you're not getting competition-usable katas in your regular class, there are lots of seminars where you can learn more advanced ones at a lower belt rank. Ask your sensei if there are any near you, that's how I learned Goju shi no dai as a blue belt.
great job in this video btw! i think your kata is nice and the location and backdrop are brilliant! i think njtr is right though slow it down! i know how you feel i always want to go 100% too but there is something my sensei said to me a long while ago which has stuck with me and helped me along the way, especially when learning new things! it was slow train fast learn! has helped me a lot! keep up the good work and lets see some more vids of you in action!
Thanks for posting bro. Slow it down, WAY down. Get hip rotation and POWER with each technique. Remember, in bassai dai, you are storming the fortress. It is hard and strong. Treat each technique individually. Don't rush into the next technique. Check out Kanazawa's Bassai Dai. Just some constructive criticism. I would hope that if I posted a video of myself, people would give me the same, but not be a#@holes about it. Thanks again for posting. I give you credit for doing that. Oss.
This is really funny - you're talking about Kata you obviously know nothing about, you're claiming to be a Go dan, which you obviously are not, you're scorning guys who legitimately critisized the Kata in this clip, since they know what they're talking about... and I have a big ego ? True, we all strive to improve as long as we live, and never achieve perfection... but this guy should go step by step, learn the basic techniques and master lower level Kata before trying Bassai Dai.
I am not a tuff guy, just a guy who dedicated much of his life (precisely, 31 of my 49 years) to Shotokan. I don't know what you mean by "black and white things", but I do know that this is a very miserable Bassai Dai, and i do know that if you're saying this is a good Kata, then you're nowhere near a Shotokan master, as you claim to be. I will never be a 5th Dan (am currently at 3rd Dan, and will probably stay at it), but I do know what Bassai Dai is.
I was actually answering "pocketofagenious" s post in wich he critisizes "keyboard warriors", and claims to be a Go Dan himself. I just observed that if he conciders this Kata good he can't be nowhere near a Go Dan. This guy in a video is trying hard, but imho he needs to spend some time perfecting basic techniques and combinations, and concentrate on lower level Kata before going on to Bassai Dai. Once you learn a Kata wrong way, it's very hard, if not impossible, to fix it.
Agreed. Sometimes it's hard to figure out when somebody is just doing the kata differently because his style is different, and when he's just an amateur being sloppy. Looks like this may be a little of both.
There is no kime whatsoever, kiai is just some vocal moan, techniques are rushed (especially Blocking techniques), one block not yet finished and the next already starting. There is virtually no hip rotation in tranzition from one blocking technique to another. Stances are to shalow, front leg in Kokutsu Dachi extended and stiff, rhytm of the Kata nonexistant.
PanicusVulgaris is right that this guy must learn a lot. However, outdoors is different and much harder to practice if the terrain is not helping. I know from my experience.
Yeah right Pocketsofagenius, keyboard Go Dan. If this is a good kata to you, then you're not even 5th Kyu. Bassai Dai is an exam Kata for Ni Kyu (blue belt), and then again for Sho Dan. This wanna-be karateka is not even at San Kyu (green belt) level.
well, protohuman, I really don't want to sound arrogant or anything like that, but in my times Bassai Dai was used as exam Kata for 2nd Kyu (blue belt), which means as a green belt you started to learn and practice Bassai Dai. We also had a mandatory "waiting period" of 6 months between exams for green and blue belts. So, by the time you're ready to take blue belt exam you're supposed to do Bassai Dai a lot better than this, and tecnicaly you're still a green belt.
Dude seriously, u need more pratcise.. focus on timeing, stance and the kata itselfs. focus on the karate not how flash you look with the sea in the background and you stood on a beach :S
dude what belt are u?!u neeed to bend your nees, stronger stance, and the traslation of Bassai Dai is storm the fortres, to me it looks like u are trying to storme a sand castle.i coud pick op on loads of mistakes made.
Need kime and hip rotation when performing movements including uchi uke, soto uke and shuto uke. Too tense also that your movements don't look natural.
Cool Setting...but...what school of Karate is it? Can't be Shotokan...some of the moves just don't fit. Also I know this makes me sound really nitpicking, but the starting and ending positions aren't exactly the same, either...
nah he is not special good at the kata! he makes some mistakes! he would get a LOW rank on the sermoni when he gets a higher belt (don't know the english word!) if he shal go that kata at all!
Didn't end in the same spot either. He's almost off the screen when he finishes.

In my experience there are two things which help me to improve Kata: strengthen your basics as best you can and practice- at least 6 days a week.

The background is stunning...kata performance is to tense. When you finished it, you looked excesively tired with rapid respirations.
Try to be more relax, look for the time of the kata(fast/slow tempo) and work on the stances. Good luck.

nice background though...
the kata has potential... it needs a little smoothing around the edges...
