Awww...Big Red passed away the year before I was born. If he were still around and when I'd finally had grasped my great love for Horses as I do to this day, I'd try to hug him. But he'd probably yell at me for it. XP RIP Big Red.
Secretariat had a tremendously large heart, inherited from his dam's side on the X chromosome (the X-Factor), which gave him all that thrust and power on the track. His trainer knew this colt was special and needed those monster workouts before races in order to perform. A freak of nature and a horse like no other.
The Americans believe that outside the U.S. borders there is a huge expanse of lifeless desert. If an American horse wins in USA, it automatically becomes the best in the world. Out of your Truman Show, everyone knows:The best jockey of all time is the Italian FRANKIE DETTORI .The best trotter of all time is the Italian "VARENNE". The best horse of all time (gallop) is the Italian "RIBOT". Secretariat is a great horse, but is not sufficient to make a recod of time to be the best. Read Wikipedia
Secretariat was as clean as a whistle, otherwise he wouldn't need those monster workouts that Laurin inflicted on him before each race. When he didn't perform well in one of those drilling sessions, such as before the Whitney when he was ill with fever, he lost. However, he never lost when he performed well in a workout. If he was juiced, he could just hang out in his barn/paddock until race day, and then let the drugs do their thing. Sec was a freak.
One of my favorite lines in part three.... "Ron Turcotte.... he let him run.... come on....." I don't know why but that line with the video clip makes me cry in awe of this magnificent horse!! Where can I buy this whole ESPN sports century movie???
Watching this documentary made me cry. He was such a magnificent creations of God's. There will never be another like him. Secretariat- King of Horseracing. <3
@watchingponies Do you think Secretariat is actually alive. When you mean alive do you mean alive physcially or spirtually. Spiritually I agree with you 110& but physically I wouldn't agree with you to a point because he can't be 41 no horse can live to be age 41. I guess anything is possible though.
Horses can probably live to that age. We have an old pony that is in her 30s. If a horse got good care, it's possible that he'd live to his 40s. Sort of like a human who makes it past 100.

I just love those espn-docs and love the legend of Big Red.
I'm thankful his life and career is so well documented, so we still can enjoy.
His career, life and just the way he looked is beautiful.
In my humble opinion he's bigger than Elvis, and actually i think he is still alive...racing some tracks at midnight. But that's just my opinion...
Thank you Partymanners! This is an absolute favorite.

I was referring more to Elvis...after he passed away, a lot of people believed Elvis was still alive.
Secretariat had that same greatness about him, so i mean spiritually.
It was also just as a nice idea.
The average lifespan of a horse is 20-25 years old, above 40 years old is very rare, especially for a race horse. But not impossible.
There is a story about a horse in Britain, who became over 60 years old.
