You could ship those cars to southern Africa where they also drive on the left and get thousands of £ for them and benefit many less fortunate people. But no, British policy decides that it's more convenient to crush them and sell them for scrap metal. Totally unethical and environmentally unfriendly, but it's pretty typical of Britain to do what they find easiest rather than what's best.

People in Britain have it too easy. I find it sickening that they'll just throw away something like that.

I can understand the fun in crushing cars with tanks and would do it myself if I had the chance, but I dislike the whole disposable culture the UK follows with regards to automobiles. Here in Algeria there are many 30 year old Renault 18s still going, yet I'm seeing 8 year old Lagunas getting crushed here. It just seems crazy.

Well, the EU countries export a very large number of used cars. Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and Switzerland (not EU I know) export in mass. Lots of them go to Eastern Europe and the poorer countries of the Middle East like Iraq, and many also to Africa. The majority of used cars in Algeria come from France.

In fairness though, British used cars have less value in nearby abroad, due to them being RHD.

Japan ships thousands of cars to southern Africa which is an even bigger distance than the UK, including cars just like that and ones with lower value. You'll be surprised what people in Africa will pay for cars. Here they'll pay in excess of £2000 for a Nissan Bluebird, let alone a late 90s Primera.

It would and does work with many other countries exporting used cars.

Actually, they do.

They ship many, many early to mid 90s cars such as Toyota Corollas on the low end of the scale and Toyota Hilux Surf and Mitsubishi Pajeros on the higher end. They're also exporting them to many left hand drive countries such as Georgia and others in the former Soviet Union (which also are a LONG way away) due to the enormous demand for used cars, despite the steering wheel being on the wrong side for them.

Yes, they will in the UK, but that's only because of economic mismanagement and the disposable nature of the British society when it comes to cars. Those could be exported and used by people for years to come.

However, that's largely down to government bureaucracy and economic (mis)management and doesn't mean that that would be the case elsewhere, where the value of cars are much higher and labour is cheaper.

Also, if a car really was beyond any repair, then there's always the option of breaking it for parts, which again can be very profitable. Crushing a complete car whether it's working or not is never the right thing to do, but people do it because it's often the quickest and easiest way of disposing of it, regardless of the other options. Also, the amount of energy required for crushing them and recycling the materials, then disposing of the non-recyclables is anything but enviro-friendly.
