@MirceaBv Russians have image of baddasses.... i dont see how this cheap american halfassed propaganda film makes it any damaging to heroic russian standing. Second 9th company is a true story buddy.
@IIKainII1 I agree!!!! But the best movie about Soviet invasion of Afghanistan is "Афганский излом", "Afganskiy Izlom" Much better than this shit!!!!!
The movie has a lot of propaganda...BUT, i just love the way it makes me feel that pain of the modern machine in that hostile and primitive land. The failures of the machines increase with the collapse of the characters...
I seen this in the theatre' , then I bought it on VHS !!!! , I loved this movie , who knew ? LOL , I think it's a cult classic !!! nobody has this on the shelves anymore !!!
@legodragonxp A T-62 IS a T-55, with a larger 115mm gun. The Israelis took a T-62 and downgraded it to 105mm (no idea why), and called it a Tiran 6. You can tell that it's a T-62 because of the long as shit gun with a muzzle break in it. The T-55 had no muzzle break. If you want to see the exact tank in the movie, look up the Tiran 6.
@blah666ful It also explains why the tank has a turret mounted machine gun (those were phased out on the Soviet versions), why the main gun has more sophisticated sights, and why the turret has no Soviet markings.
@blah666ful Interesting, I'll have to look in to it. I would hazard a guess that the 105 was put in for ammo commonality with the US tanks that they had.
The best thing of this movie is that the "Russians" DID NOT speak with English with Russian accents. That always pisses me of when movies do that; non-English speakers don't speak accented English to each other all of the time. Sure, if it were in Russian with subtitles, it'd be better, but, hey, it's an American film. If they speak straight English, we English speakers can identify with them and pretend we're listening in Russian.
@barkon Exactly. I find that when I watch a movie about foreigners, I actually identify with them more if they speak like I do. I don't focus on the accent and I focus on the story and their actions. Storytelling is about teaching people that we are all the same in many ways, regardless of ethnicity or culture or language. Accents are often obstacles which constantly remind you "this person is nothing like you".
I agree, and the idea was pioneered by Stanley Kubric when he made Paths of Glory. It would have completely ruined the movie if he had the actors speak with fake French accents.
@retaliatorek Yes, the problem is that so many movies came out in the last 10 to 15 years titled "The Beast", plus it was always confusing the public with the older thriller, "The Beast", that I think they decided to re-title it recently. Especially in this era of the Internet, you have to have some kind of distinctive title otherwise you get run over by the more popular or more recent titles that are also called "The Beast". Too many.
Also, the 12,7mm machine gun on the top is a M2 Browning disguised in a DShK.

The tanks IS a T-55 bought from the Israelis. They had re-gunned the tank with a 105mm cannon, this is why a lot of people think it is a T-62.

This movie was filmed in Israel using an Israeli modified T-55 tank. I suppose the producers wanted to make it look like a T-72.
Russian Tanks were death traps to their crews. British and American tanks are much better.
