  • aww man, i love that whistle

  • Naiiiice

  • Are you an employe in Cass?

  • No, I was just a visitor. Went there with a friend who is a true fan of steam trains, we stayed in one of the cottages for rent in Cass. I highly recommend it as a get-away weekend from Pittsburgh.

  • Thanks for posting this. I've been there twice and the trains are awesome!! The brakeman on our car even let me work the brakes.

  • what whistle is on no 2 a c&O 4 chime?

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, Its very nice!

  • @Strasburg1991 C&O 3 Chimer :)

  • @Strasburg1991 you know nothing about cass

  • beautiful trains...Btw, whats the layover time on Bald knob run. Says the trip is 5 hours, but how much time on the train? thanks

  • I love shay 2's whistle

  • i live like 10 minutes away from the train i ride it all the time with my grandma

  • Between 5:16 to 5:34, that whistle reminds me of a song that was recorded back in the 60's with a thunderstorm. Hearing that sound brings me back memories.. thanks!!

  • Everyone who likes steam should visit. They rent houses in town by the day or week, and there is alot to see and do. A nearby ski resort can top the trip also. I been several times and plan to keep going back! The whistle in the mountains is great, dont stop no matter what any moron says negative about it!

  • Also worth visiting is the National Radio Astronomical Observatory in Green Bank, just down the road from Cass.

We stayed overnight in Cass, the house was basic, not deluxe, because our prime objective was the railroad.

  • good train video

  • Megatwingo, If you don't like those neccessary whistle blasts, then don't listen to them! Stop posting your ridiculous comments here. Those "neccessary" whistle blasts are common practice in ALL N. American railroads, & are required by LAW. I guess you don't have dangerous intersections & pedestrian traffic in Germany though....

  • 1)If you want me to read and reply your answers here, you must click at the reply button beside MY statements. But I stumbled over this video again and found your reply anyway.

    2)Calm down. Please.

3)Your explaination about pedestarians sounds logical.

4)I´m posting what I want. If you can´t handle my harmless words....your bad luck.

  • LOL at what Wingatmingo said below. The excessive whistle blasts are done to keep the tourists happy, & neccessary for all the crossings. They can't afford to have anything happen to thes irreplaceable engines either, so.... Besides, That Crosby 3 chimer sounds better than any of those high pitch shrilly European whistles. I suppose you never heard of Boxcar Willie either?

  • "That Crosby 3 chimer sounds better than any of those high pitch shrilly European whistles"

A matter of taste. I like all train whistles.

And again: If you expect me to know about your replies here, you have to click on the reply button beside my statements.

  • what about t1 3 chimes?

  • I now know why its the smokey mountains-good video

  • nice comment but it's no the Smokey Moutains - this is an original WV line that is now run by the state of WV as a tourist attraction - and they use the original train and engines that they service themselves!

  • Was this shot in West Virginia?

  • DUH!!!!

  • Wow...I thought coming down the mountain in Altoona was bad. That looks really steep! I couldn't imagine bringing 16,000 tons down that baby! Talk about holding on for dear life!

  • Your video is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some 1920's railway centenary tobacco cards and a short clip of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway.

  • my brother runs shay # 2 here been there since 1996

  • Very nice!! I love the echoes!!!

  • I rode in the cab with that angineer and he has a really good hand on the whistle.

  • Sweet1 I rode in the cab of engine #6 (Shay 6)

Im Going next week and hope to ride up to Spruce in that engine or to whittiker the next day!

  • Love the howly "wolf-like" whistle... What type of whistle is that, do you know?

  • a 4% grade was considered a limit on normal railroads, anything above that would leave normal locomotives wheels spinning, shay loco motives had more traction due to thier geared drive systems, the only downfall being is they couldnt achieve high speeds

  • really nice video --- thanks !!

  • IT IS VERY SHORT

  • neat

  • nice one

  • ive been on Cass before and i took the all day one to Bald Knob and i remember it a lot. the old logging camp, the switchback, and the top of Bald Knob. But i didnt kno they had hieslers

  • Oh boy, a C&O 3-chime whistle! Man does that thing sound good! Thanks for sharing!

  • fantastic locos! Which is the max gradient of the line?

  • 11%, which I'm told is really really steep for a steam train. Our friend Carl, who was with us on this trip, has a web site devoted to model railroading at http://www.carendt.us. He will be posting a new scrapbook on June 1 which will indluce stills of the switchback which show the grade much better than my video.

  • Wonderful ride! The audio is especially great starting with the birds chirping and moving on to the steam whistle, the mechanical screeches, and the chug-a-chug of an historic steam train. I most enjoyed the scenes of the switchback and details of the gears. It felt like I was back on the train!
