  • That is crazy!!

  • Sorry

  • That's amazing

  • I've only watched the first 40 seconds of this clip, and I have a question to the guy who said:

"...and we might be boarding lifeboats in the middle of the ocean"

Yeah um how are little lifeboats going to save you from drowning if not even one of the biggest cruise ships can withstand those waves?

  • @TheOneAndOnlyMe92 Hi There! I was on this ship when this happened and I can answer your question! The large ship will capsize if it tilts more than 45 degrees to either side, whereas the life boats are fully enclosed and can fully flip upside down with passengers inside and still float. There are even seat belts! The bigger problem, though, was that it would be nearly impossible to get into the boats without being thrown overboard in those rough waters. I knew there was no way they'd try!

  • @MsSarahCan Ohh right okay, I didn't realise those lifeboats were fully enclosed and could do that etc. Thanks for replying!

  • wow, 21:22 minutes long made from 5 minutes of footage, typical american tv. is the repetition to fill time or is it because americans need to be told the same thing 5 times before it even begins to sink in?

  • @ratballbag Or you know that thing about TV channels needing to fill up time slots with content and advertising...

  • @ratballbag yes on both

  • @ratballbag The whole 21 minutes wasn't actual footage, it would be stupid if they just showed a 5 minute video and said shit happened

  • this is how the titanic went underwater!!! WEIRD! :O

  • That's why the movie Poseidon came in 2006 ^^

  • Fall '97 represent!

  • my sister is actually in this video its amazing that everyone survived

  • yeah my cousin is on this too! looks kinda fun though

  • Wow.... That's scary, considering the fact that my cousin is on the 2010 spring voyage. Butttttt they will be back on may 5th soo nothing like that yet and hopefully not at all.

And how did religion get sucked into this?!?!

  • atleast the engineers knew what they were doing. can't say the same for the captian.don't he know how to read weather reports.

  • overly sensationalized crap,if it wasnt a bunch of kids (that term is used loosely, we are talking about a group where everybody is 18+), then they probably wouldnt have gotten any coverage at all as other people have posted here, it has happened to other ships, where is their tv program?

  • OMG 50 FOOT WAVE!

  • Thank God they lived... Gods mercy is overpowering and His love

  • if you truly believe that then you have to believe that god caused the storm, (everything happens according to his will, right?) so what you are saying then, is thank the reason for the problem, and then if you live you say that the reason for the problem is merciful. thats like saying a bully is merciful because he only beats you up but doesnt kill you.

  • Comment removed

  • i was responding to "thank god they lived", you stupid hippy christian. the earth has behavior? really? put down whatever you are smoking and stop watching 2012 over and over.

  • Comment removed

  • actually, i dont have a fatalistic view of anything, and i realize that the earth has weather, but i dont think NATURAL phenomenon such as tectonic activity or severe weather systems is the anything other than what it is, not some god allowing it, or willing it to happen. and you are making up a new religion, if you believe in one of the three god centric religions then you have to believe that that nothing happens without gods will, anything less than that is blasphemy.

  • you are a zealot which is why when things happen that dont fall into line with what you believe you start making up scenarios that would fit your emotional needs. i.e.; "the earth has feelings and emotions and when you make it angry it has storms and earth quakes." (paraphrased) your original post sounds like a mix of the bible, the lord of the rings, and a hippy dope smoking session.

i cant argue with crazy so farewell and i hope you take your head out of your rectum soon.

  • dude calm down, everything that happened was in Gods control. those that could have died could have been because it was their time, or because any longer and they could have gone to hell, God keeps that in thought. and also if a bully hits your face, turn the other cheek. or offer the dude a drink of cold water, or food. Be nice to those that dislike you, and if you die doing it, well then the Knigdom of Heaven is yours

  • as for you, i would say that God controls everything is is present on earth, all hurricanes, tornados, ect. Its the reason that we should Fear God, because he can destroy both Body and Soul, and judge us. its is also demonstrating his Majesty, and beauty, of how he can create such a marvelous event.

  • 10:26"so do not be afraid of them. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed to hidden that will not be made known". 10:28 "do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." 10:30 "And even the very hairs on your head are all numbered." 10:31 "so dont be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows" Book of Matthew NIV

  • that comment is 2 months old. you are a zealot.

i cant argue with crazy so farewell and i hope you take your head out of your rectum soon.

  • @lawenforcer2111 hahaha get a life you close minded religious faggot... and take your bullshit views elsewehre, we dont need you contaminating this great video with your made up shannanogens...

  • I ran into a storm while on a cruise. It was scary! There were thinks flying off the shelves in the kitchen and the pools were overflowing! The deck was flooded. It was somewhat fun in the beginning but then became very serious!

  • absolutely a tremendous story

  • my teacher MR.TiLLY was in there and he talked about it all period.

    he is a science teacher.

    pretty cute(:

    he's only 24.

    and were in 8th grade.

    haha

we even saw him in this videooo

  • it would have been bad if the band kept playing as the boat went down

  • If course they'd never seen waves that big! There from the friggin' grain belt!

  • i just wached that right now!

  • i love learning about storms and i wish there were more of these vids on youtube

  • I'm going on semester at sea next fall, and I'm not worried, but Look at 5:30 min. in the video... "The Explorer sails directly into 3 storm systems." wtf? this is what we have radar for, u don't just sail into three storms like the movie perfect storm. What is this a bunch of ametuers runing the ship?

  • When you are out in the middle of sea, weather happens. You try your best to avoid it but it is not always possible. Weather can be worse than forcasted or better. The show showed us what the weather was like during the worst but do we know what was forcasted a week in advance or a few days in advance? Do we know what the ship thought the weather was going to be like?

  • That year was a bad year for storms. I went on a cruise that year and ran into hurricane and they were trying to avoid it, but it just happens...I went in September, but never will go in September again.

  • this show is actually interesting for an educational show :)

  • i dont wanna know what it was like to take a crap, lol..

  • Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) are the biggest (for now)

  • Think the biggest one is Grand Princess

  • that's a large ship, but by far not the biggest (It's less than 1/2 the weight of the Titanic)... I wonder how the biggest cruise ships would do in the same weather

  • same thing i was thinking about;)

  • It doesn't take as much as most people belive to get a big ship moving.

  • My mom (as a nurse) and I are thinking about doing the summer 09 trip to Europe. How dangerous would the seas be then?

  • I dont' think they would be that dangerous, I think this occured in the Pacific, weather always seems to be bad out in that direction. But this seemed to be an unlucky event; three stroms converging is tough to come by.

  • Weather on the Northeast Pacific (Alaska) seems to be worst during the winter months. May-September you can count on very few storms and calm seas on the North Pacific.

  • Comment removed

  • it acctualy goes back to around 1920

  • Actually Semester at Sea left from Vancouver and traveled in the North Pacific quite often, many years actually. Including a voyage I was on. Not sure where you got your information...

  • thanks for posting no i have to worry about dying when i do semester at sea

  • this video lag from here in germany. can't load it.

  • Thanks so much for sharing this video! It's really appreciated.

  • Thanks, I am doing another program "the scholar ship" and this was interesting to see. Especially thank you for leaving in that extra part about the lifeboats! :)

  • Could you possibly post other storm stories like the ones about tornados and hurricanes?

  • Tried not to view too much as my son is on SAS now. Can only imagine what those Iowa families went thru. My wife worries every day.

  • my sister was on that boat, she called at 1 in the morning saying she was ok after we heard the ship was in a huge story. it was crazy

  • Wow. That's amazing how things like that can happen!

  • i can see where you are coming from but taking a trip to the bearing sea that is stupid that is how the ocean is down there

  • Great documentary, thanks for posting! Probably the scariest school trip ever!

  • This is so scarey to see...the north Pacific route seems ridiculous in January.

  • Wow, I am a dependant from Fall 05 and I have to say, thank you so much for posting this it is my favorite video ever. It's very powerful for me, seeing the familiar ship that was my home being smashed up like that, the good old Union piano upended, the familiar glass tables smashed.

As a SAS alum, I've heard tell of the famous "Semester by Air" and it's good to get the whole story. Thank you, 5 stars.

  • SAS alumni 03 wow

  • hmmmm.... that would stink

  • I saw this today (7/06/07).

  • Yeah, you are mixing up to videos, the film of the ship overview, (from the helicopter) is not Semester at sea (Explorer), It's her sister ship Voyager, btw (that was in the mediteranian), not close to alaska is it, and yeah, the biggest mistake was to take that route at all, the route planers are the one who fucked up, it was suppose to be a summer season cruise to alaska.. Used to work on explorer for a year in the engine..

  • Anybody who is dumb enough to go out on the pacific during the winter deserves this cruise... Sounds like a money saving tactic by the cruise ship company...

  • the ship didn't sink! I've seen another footage from outside (shooting from an airplane or helicopter). they said the ship sunk. pfft...good that everything went alright. I bet the ship was smelling puke! haha....

  • I was expecting to see highly trained commandos training, but this was pretty good too lol

  • SAS - Semester at dea, look at the description :S not special air service.

  • what the fuck has this gotto do with the SAS

  • Having been on this ship, I know what an exercise in balance it can be. The first days are hard enough, I cant even imagine this but it's kinda cool to see my ship be destroyed
