I feel like I might be saving money in the long run by keeping the same German car for a long time and just doing its maintenance program and let it run until it dies which will probably take a very long time. I think that would be less expensive in the long run rather then owning a car made for the "general public"
I also think it has more to do with peoples love of driving. If you do not enjoy driving very much chances are you will not buy a BMW M3 or 323 for that matter.
Also, Jaguar and Aston Martin seem to have diminished and other British brands are controlled by their foreigners. Ford seems to be doing OK but we'll how they'll do in 5 years. We'll just see.

In my prediction, in 30 years perhaps, the 5 brands, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and VW, will ONLY be the ones to prevail in the WORLD! I think it's because of their culture of constant refining and FOCUS of their lineups resulting in their stability of their companies for decades, while others just 'come and go'/'going downhill'. I don't think GM will survive. Chrysler merged with Fiat (Fix It Again, Tony). The Japanese seem to be undercut be the Koreans, who may be undercut be the Chinese.

The reason why I did not talk about Opel is because Angela Merkel, betraying her capitalistic principles, bailed the brand out and because of GM's control, it doesn't seem to produce overall as good of a car as the Germans. Otherwise, I'd be seeing them all over the US. This is different when the Germans control the foreigners, like Mercedes and Chrysler, for example. Just look at the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger which is slowly replacing the Ford Crown Victorias as police cars.
Volkswagen: comfort/sport downgrade to Audi, BMW, Mercedes though I think it is more luxurious than Lexus and other non-German brands, without the need for "decorating" the interior/exterior.
While each brand has a different focus, what they all have in common are reliability (whether or not the surveys say so) and practicality because of the autobahn and the need to address the disadvantages in DETAIL.
Audi: comfort/sport. It does this by implementing FWD/AWD, never RWD. Using FWD does not cause oversteer like Mercedes, creating more opportunity to add comfort, unlike BMW.

I have owned 7 different german cars including BMWs Audis and VW and have been appalled with everyone, the quality and Design of them has been dreadful. My current car a 2002 BMW 728i is so bad Im considering doing an insurance job on it, its awful in everyway, electric issues, trim issues and its a big heavy awkward pile of shit to drive, I think Ill buy jap next time and leave the german crap alone for good...

I have heard horror stories about the V8's poor mechanical balance, roughness and durability, even people in BMW magazine in the UK say that a BMW V8 of this era can be a gamble...
then you must be comparing it to an 735i automatic... both manual should be (0-100kmh) 8,6 vs. 7,5 and in topspeed approx 235 kmh vs 250 (electronic limiter) There should be a difference in torque difference of around 100nm.
And im not talking about some measured values of car magazines here, shouldnt trust those...
I do agree that I shouldnt have bought a 728i, I should have gone for a Lexus LS400 instead, at least it would have been less hassle and nicer to drive than this German crap!

I don´t think so... okay many of those cars were sold to the Usa but I see those cars driving around in Germany every day.... another thing is the needed fuel in average 15 liters but for an offroad car that´s okay....

My dads new VW broke down after a week from new, and I used to have to take no end of new automatic german cars back to the dealerships for repair with my last job. They make terrible Auto boxes.

At the end of the day, all I said was that I think germany makes terrible Auto boxes. I've gone by my own exprience of my family owning Auto german cars, as well as working 10 years in a car auctions and then a tow truck firm.
If people didn't like my comment then tough shit. I don't really care. Its just my experince with them.

I live in America unfortunately, been to Germany many times. Germany is by far the most beautiful place I've ever seen, been everywhere except toilet Africa. I might be a little biased though cause most of my relatives live in Germany.

most italian cars feature german engines? i think you exaggerate. only pagani and lamborghini maybe but only these two occur to me. what about german cars with italian technology? think about the brembo brake systems for instance that porsche and other german manufacturers have. think about pirelli tires etc.
dude you can't compare german cars with italian cars in terms of looks. italian cars look much better. ferrari isnt ugly at all. looks much better than a porsche! :P

I didn't say "most italian cars" but "italian supercars such as Lamborginis" which is actually true and no exaggeration. It's a subtle difference, but of great importance. I never claimed no german manufacturer uses parts from other countries. Of course they do!
But come on, Ferrari doesn't even play in the same league as Porsche does lookwise.
The only company coming anywhere near them is Aston Martin, imho.

I have owned 7 different german cars including BMWs Audis and VW and have been appalled with everyone, the quality and Design of them has been dreadful. My current car a 2002 BMW 728i is so bad Im considering doing an insurance job on it, its awful in everyway, electric issues, trim issues and its a big heavy awkward pile of shit to drive, I think Ill buy jap next time and leave the german crap alone for good...

The best German cars are built in Germany. Ingolstadt, Heilbronn-Neckarsulm, München, Wolfsburg, S-Zuffenhausen, S-Untertürkheim. Not from factories in USA, UK, Mexico and elsewhere.

well, that fact that the 728i posts a near identical 0-60 time and top speed as a 735i proves that Im not such a hopeless man! The difference is that the V8 is not only rougher than the i6, but its also alot more unreliable too! whos the dummy now???

728i: 0-60 8.4 secs 144mph top speed, 735i: 0-60 8.2 secs 151 mph top speed, not much difference there my friend...
I have heard horror stories about the V8's poor mechanical balance, roughness and durability, even people in BMW magazine in the UK say that a BMW V8 of this era can be a gamble...

then you must be comparing it to an 735i automatic... both manual should be (0-100kmh) 8,6 vs. 7,5 and in topspeed approx 235 kmh vs 250 (electronic limiter) There should be a difference in torque difference of around 100nm.
And im not talking about some measured values of car magazines here, shouldnt trust those...

I do agree jap cars are bland souless and ugly... but Ive owned Jap cars on the past and none have caused any expense of worry, theyve all still worked and been smooth and accurate to drive, my E38 (along with my E34) is heavy, jerky and lumbering on corners, the steering is heavy and lacks feel...
