@xboxboi4444 That may be, but still it should be then considered unsportsmanlike conduct. That makes more sense. Even the announcers didn't know what it meant or they just thought it was a weird way to put it.
For those of you who are confused, Ron Cherry is quoting Ben Dreith, who used "giving him the business" to describe a personal foul where a a player repeatedly punched the quarterback after tackling him....here's a link: watch?v=eslz06J9hFw
Ron Cherry is THE WORST football referee in ACC history. He is the most incompetent, inept, basically a buffoon, and the laughing stock of the football officiating profession.
The 13 people who dislike this obviously have no sense of humor. What could be funnier than a ref saying that number 69 was givin' someone da business?
Here the NC State crowd was already disgusted with the score 37-0.. and then they hear that.. they all start laughing like crazy. I think even the players on the team were laughing. At least he gave something the home crowd to talk about besides there team getting there ass whomped.
@1000bomb if you are going to reply to me, at least learn how to spell words. how can such incompetence keep its job? Oh wait i know how, it is called affirmative action. i wish him nothing but the worst. I hope they find him in a gambling scandal that effectively ends his career and takes down the ACC that he works for. He is scum who should "get the business" himself and maybe aids was a little harsh but his agony would bring me great pleasure.
@TheMaskedoutlaw if you must know genius, white refs have made this EXACT same mistake and much worse. So if you think he kept his job because he was black, obviously you don't know a lot about reffing. One small mistake would not cost you a job
@JonDon101 you must not know this guy, he makes horrible calls each and every week. He gives the business to everyone he comes in contact with, i hate all refs white and black. But this guy i hate the most. aids
Cherry is just copying what ref Ben Dreith said in a 1986 Jets/Bills game, when Marty Lyons sacked Jim Kelly then Lyons pinned Kelly to the ground and started punching him. THAT was the best call EVER.
@flpsyco03 lol he actually quoted an NFL ref from 1986 who said that. but it was still hillarious. Thats the only funny thing Don Cherry has ever done, because from what I hear he a terrible ref.
Ref stole that from a 1986 Bills/ Jets game...it was funnier the first time because it was unrehearsed,,,it was a "personal foul, unecessary roughness" call but the ref got tongue-tied and said "personal foul, Number ?.. uh...uh...He was really giving him the business down there."
@wakeboardfreekk Giving the business mean the linemen was holding the defensive player down and punching or slappin him to keep it down in other words its unnecessary roughness
@dodgedieselpower35 no, the first official who said that phrase back in the 80's was very much white. If you watch at about the 3 or 4 second mark, the 2 players to the right of the ball carrier go to the ground and #69 punches him. It's kinda hard to see. Anyhow, the original call, was a personal foul on marty lions of the Jets becuase he taclked the qb and proceeded to punch him. The official in that game said "he was giving him the business down there"
Its in Urban Dictionary "to beat your opponent down in a fight or sport." :)
