A program can be considered "socialist" if it's entirely run by the govt...like Social Security is. And you're right that SS has been an effective and popular program. IMO it's a truism that once people get an entitlement they'll never give it up.

But there's a huge difference between SS and health care. SS is nothing more than a tax collection and redistribution program. Health care however, is a service industry. Imagine govt health care run like the DMV/IRS.

A "socialized health care system" does not mean that govt bureaucrats will be doing health evaluations. It is a way to streamline the entire process.

The truth is that overhead costs for Medicare is around 2%. Overhead costs for firms in our current system: 20%.

Efficiency comes through scale and uniformity. Every insurance company has different forms and different requirements.

This is killing family practices here in the U.S. I know--my wife used to work for one!

theopinion: good points. But the words we choose are important, because they create an impression. Most americans don't like the word "socialism"...regardless of what it actually is, they react negatively to the word. Dems need to find another word...maybe "managed" health care.

I'm Ok with moving forward on this issue as long as ALL health care providers remain in the private sector (no govt unions), and the govt role is limited to oversight/regulation.

And, with the great number of people, including illegal aliens, who will now have free or pro-rated health insurance, there will be more people using the health care system thus costing more and more money. When the government can't pay for all the additional people in the system we will have rationing.

Don't go throwing in "illegal aliens" as an argument. Just keep to the facts. You will need to have a card to use the system. Thus, those without the ability to get a card (i.e., illegals) will not have access to the system.

The trouble is, of course, that we already pay for the illegal aliens under the exist cumbersome and costly Corporatized System. When hospitals take on those cases, they put the bill on us anyway.

Wouldn't taking them on (if you must) be better under a low cost system?

I know what Habeus corpus is. But it still does not apply to prisoners of war. And alot of the people released from Guantanamo returned to the battlefield to fight against us again and were either killed or recaptured. And, alot of the people still in Guantanamo are there because their home countries won't take them. There is even one who said, I don't want to go now. The weather in my country is too bad.
