I don't wanna sound like a nerd but this guy is awful, michael bay is a better director, how did he get superman?!?!?! Looks at his past films, they've sucked donkey dick.
I read it. However, I disagree on many of the author's standpoints in that article. I wasn't sure if I bought into some of his occult symbolism theories until I read his character bios.
He is far overthinking Ozy, to the point where almost all credibility is gone, and then he doesn't seem to understand the Comedian, who has much greater significance.
Overall I don't think that he has a correct viewpoint on the graphic novel or the characters in it. Interesting to read though.
Don't complain how Snyder made 300 a "racist, homophobic mindless piece of violent trash" because the graphic novel is already like that. One of Frank Miller's trademarks in graphic novels is over the top brutality, so the movie had to have over the top brutality.
From people who watched the first 22 minutes of the film, they're already saying that Watchmen hasn't lost at all its storytelling touch and that it'll be the Blade Runner of superhero films.
Have you even read Watchmen? The previews look like shit, he is ruining it (the costumes are ridiculous and out of character, he has changed the ending, he made the shit heap that is "300"... too many reasons to list man) and turning it into generic super hero trash which ironically is exactly what Watchmen derided.
I don't know how a true fan of the book can get behind the shit Snyder is pushing. It is the same only in name, nothing else. I hope it bombs.
Of course I've read the book. The ending as it is in the book would probably set off general audiences and they wouldn't understand it. I don't know why you're so set off by 300 (or you're gay and hated the pretty obvious homophobic overtones) but most people liked it. IMDb has it rated at 7.9, with 189,000 votes from moviegoers.
"People are too dumb to understand" I don't think is a valid reason to change the ending of anything. Unless you only care about reaping dollars of course.
The comic was great, even a masterfully made movie couldn't do it justice, it's just the wrong medium for it. I have no interest in seeing this.
I love the "homophobic overtones" in your message, by implying that my sexuality could somehow trivialize my opinion of an otherwise terrible movie!
All 300 (the movie) does is glorify multiple forms of regressive hatred.
Even ignoring that, there was nothing noteworthy about 300. Several modern movies do the whole "over the top violence" thing better, and the story was simplified into trash. Take these things together and you pretty much have the opposite of Watchmen.
This would be nice, but if it is the case the trailers do a very poor job of presenting it.
Just the way Rorschach moves, and the over the top weaponry and path of destruction that surround every clip of the Comedian seem to say that Snyder sees the Watchmen as some sort of "X-Men hit mid-life crisis" group instead of "crazy people who no one really likes, in part because they smell bad".
watchmen cannot be released in the summer of '09 which is what stupid fox wants and thus the reason for this case going to court. the summer months are jam packed with dumb downed action movie and a smart awe inspiring movie like watchmen would get passed over by audiences because they don't know enough about it like they did with the dark knight. put watchmen in a month where we know it will dominate such as march as scheduled or if delayed November perhaps, either way i cant wait to see it!!!!
We have the director of a film based on a graphic novel, which was harshly ridiculed by Alan Moore, directing a film based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore.
300 was vapid and one-dimensional, everyone can shut up about that. Alan Moore has vowed not to see this; as he is the author of the novel being adapted, I think we have reason to take concern.
I also thought 300 was "fun", but the watchmen is'nt supposed to be fun. It's a dark story with a lot of symbolism that deserves to be a great movie. But not a "fun" movie thats simply a lot of action and does nothing to service the plot already there. I'm not trying to judge this movie before i see it, but given snyder's last movie, not to mention the fact he sounds like a 14 year old, my expectations are low. That being said, the previews look pretty cool, to me
damn right. i just finished the graphic novel, and sad though it is to say i don't have high hopes for snyder's adaptation living up to the source material
300 was not terrible. It wassent amazing though. But take the directon and the story telling of 300 and put that on a great story like the Watchmen and you will have a great movie.
Are you serious? Have you read Watchmen? If you boil it down into xenophobia and mindless violence you will get a great movie?
Please explain this to me... I mean Watchmen had very little action in it, especially in context with other "super hero" stories. A director whose career "highlight" is 2 hours of masturbatory effects and violence shouldn't be allowed anywhere near it.
You're pulling this out of context. Snyder didn't write 300, Frank Miller did. Frank Miller also wrote Sin City, which isn't more uplifting in its violent themes than 300 is. And don't forget that Frank Miller also wrote the now infamous 'I'm the goddamn Batman' line... If 300 was a good book-to-movie adaptation, I'm sure he'll do fine with Watchmen. The videoblogs have assured me that, except for the ending, this movie will be loyal to the original, and genius, work that is Watchmen.
Of course I know Frank Miller wrote 300, Sin City, et al. I was simply saying that Snyder boiled 300 down to mindless violence and blind hatred (that had no target nor repercussion)... So what is to say he won't do the same with Watchmen?
A different ending renders the rest of the story pointless. I just can't believe that a person with any sense would attempt a Watchmen adaptation WITHOUT the Watchmen ending.
I have to agree with you here, 300 was nothing but one long action seen (which wasn't all that impressive by the way) which is okay when watching it once but watching it a second time just seems like a waste of time. However, I did like his remake of Dawn of the Dead, not loved but it wasn't bad.
They should have gotten a way better director for this film. Watchmen deserves the best, not a guy who only directed two motion pictures.
Watchmen is much more complicated than 300 or Sin City. Visually he will nail it. But narratively it will suck, no doubt about it.
The movie will suck. I mean, yeah, it'll be cool to watch at Dr. Manhattan but the essence will be lost. No matter how good a director you are, you just cannot make Watchmen into a movie. Its too complicated, frenetically non-lineal, the pirate comic book, the complementary texts at the end of each issue. You can't take all of it into a movie and make it work.
Okay, he is NOT changing the ending. He is only changing the fucking squid!!!! Did anybody listen to the interview or did they just listen to the fact that he is changing the squid to something else?
Snyder is a bitch. He claims all other superheros r 'stupid.' He is also over rated, I mean 300 was ok. It wasn't amazing like people claim it 2 b. Screw u snyder I hope when u fuck up watchmen ur directing ends and u go broke and die.
a Watchmen movie has never been made, all attempts have fallen through. for once, someone is getting a foot hold. even if the movie is terrible, i'd like to see what they can do with it. Watchmen deserves a decent attempt at a movie. synder is willing and is also trying to stay as true as possible to the novel itself. that is as best we can hope for. Watchmen is too complicated for the screen, but, we should at least appreciate the movie as a separate entity with Watchmen fundamentals.
Wait, why should we appreciate the movie separately? It is a movie adaptation of the book. If it hopes to get off the hook of criticism by being appreciated separately, it has another thing coming.
It doesn't deserve a decent movie, it deserves better, and that is to be left as it was intended. Even if this movie is great, it'll be LESS than the book deserves.
Of course, but no movie ever is as good as its book or plotline. You can't even expect that. And, since we can't expect the movie to be like the book, we'd be doing both a disservice to judge them as the same thing. Jurassic park, Fight Club, 21, The Time Machine, etc These books were brilliant, but the movies were either all hollywood, loosely based on, completely different, or just plain terrible (in that order compared to the movies above) and these DID get off the literary comparison hook.
Not true. Sometimes a movie adaptation can tighten up and narrow down a book that needed some help (Fight Club, imo, is a much more streamlined and powerful movie than it is a book).
I'm just stating that for sake of the argument. I agree with you completely! sometimes a movie CAN make it a greater force. BUT, if it doesn't, it's not like the reader wasn't prepared for the movies failure, and just because the movie fails, doesn't mean the book will be any less powerful. and Fight Club is the perfect example of treating the two as separate entities. Palahniuk had the mind, but Fincher had the vision. Like a Rock cover of a Country song. Both are great, but appeal differently.
because you know they never touched the comic in there LIVES. its like those people who believe they "discovered" so and so band. They feel they must brag about it till they get sick of the one song they know and then call them old and played out. Just wait it out. it will pass. and the profiles leftover, those are the dedicated fans, those are the kids who actually know what Watchmen IS. Watchmen needs to get back into the hands of the youth(my opinion), even at the expense of some web abuse.
(the comment directly below was a response for someone else, the one relating to overuse of this all on myspace)
of COURSE it doesn't need a movie. its fine with out a movie. But you've never looked at the pages and wondered what it would look like in motion? on screen? You've never wished that you could bring Watchmen up in a conversation and expect people to know what it is? The comic will always be brilliant. Yes, a Watchmen movie is not necessary, but it's not at all detrimental either.
ahh that is where we differ. A book like this...everyone should have the opportunity to read. I found out about it because a friend literally pulled it off a shelf and it opened to the page where new york is destroyed. They read it, and passed it on to me. Watchmen, this amazing book, is, nowadays, only happened upon. It deserves much better then that. It deserves more. It deserves to be shoved upon the eyes of the public. A movie WILL do that. Disagree, but that is my stand.
Also, if you were to take a pole of 50 people, off the side walk. How many of them do you think would know Watchmen, the graphic novel? It deserves better. This is not the kind of book you horde and feel special knowing about. This is the kind of book you lend to as many people as you can. But, its hard. have you never gotten the eye roll? A comic book? This movie will blast them. It will show them that, though it may be a graphic novel, these are no run of the mill the-day-is-saved-superheros.
oh i agree completely king. its funny that you mention getting the eye roll. i alomost always get some sort of reaction like im immature or something. Its hard to get it through to people the amount of detail and incredible story telling that is in this novel. all they see is a childs comic... untill all the blood i guess. as for the movie i hope it is good, i have high expectations and the trailor blew me away. slightly different from the novel but amazing non the less.
i agree with stansfield. and what the fuck, zack snyder? directing watchmen? just listen to the guy. him trying to understand watchmen is like dr. malcolm trying to understand rorschach.
Putting aside the fact that Hollywood thrives by making stories simple enough for the greatest number of morons, this film will fail because it can't be true to the comic's most basic aspects. I don't give a fuck about "word for word," "character for character," etc. The people who insist that a mini-series would be better are just as wrong as Snyder. The problem is that almost everything great about Watchmen is inextricably linked to reciprocally connected, static images. That's how it works.
Before you complain about complaining again, see: IRONY.
And you were supposed to ask if I want cries with my waaahburger. Leave off the clumsy "French" and reserve the "shake" for pestering shapely women and/or men, e.g., "Hey, baby, you want fries with that shake, by which I refer to the pleasing motion of your ass?" Seriously, you can't pull off sarcasm looking like an idiot. See: PITIFUL.
My mistake,I obviously mistook your reasoned debate( i.e."Why don't you cry about it somewhere else. Goddamn.") for infantile playground taunts, how silly of me - I was making a point about how Hollywood corrupts revered texts and you invited yourself into the debate with your fatuous comments...you might want to think twice about giving me advice in these circumstances don't you think?...as for the 'pool / pile' debate I bow to your extensive experience of ingesting seminal fluid!
The typical voice of American youth...Shouldn't you be painting your fingernails black like the putrid emo you so obviously are or don't your parents allow you access to solvents anymore down in their basement?...even better get back to your self-harming and leave the discussion to the grown-ups you rancid pile of dog jism!
Having read Watchmen when it first came out and introduced it to friends as an original example of the comic medium I'm starting to feel more and more dispirited as more images are leaked out via the internet...Snyder claims that he wants to stay faithful to the novel yet he's already making unneccessary changes to the costumes...it's not looking good people! If they fuck this one up remind me never to go and watch another superhero movie ever again!!
The plot and characters can be put in a movie, but that medium is fundamentally incapable of being faithful to what makes this comic great. So if Snyder really believes his movie can be true to the story's spirit, he doesn't really get it, and that's a solid reason to avoid the thing. He should've just told a tale in that universe instead of trying to adapt something that can't be adapted well.
you just know all these little "myspacers" are going to tout they're rorshach ridden profiles much like they're doing with ledger now. I don't know why that bugs me but it does. Maybe its the overcommercialization(is that a word?)thats imminent?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hey Zack Snyder i have a message for you go fuck ur self u cock sucking asshole atleast read a book before makinga movie. fuck u and ur fucking racist movie, go fuck urself
Why the Hell do I have the feeling this movie is going to be approached as just another movie(with a twist! :P) rtaher than as the awesome masterpiece it should be? If I were this guy and wanted to make a movie for watchmen i'd be out scouting for locations that give the right ambience; and properly working on all the CGI(that they are BOUND to Include{which will taint the effecst rather than do it with rigs and sets}); and make it a good work of art and passion. Hollywood anyone?
I saw the location they chose for the scene in page 12 and it looked good. Also LILACTIME, the changes to the costume are well done so stop bitchin' about it.
Jack Snyder can't even do a Zombie Film right. Look at his Crap-ass remake of "Dawn of the Dead". How the Hell does he think he's going to handle the subtle nuances of "The Watchmen". Plus Moore hates anything of his that has been "adapted" for Hollywood no matter who does it.
Zak, Zach, Zack, Jack, Black, FLAK, whatever you call him he's still arrogant if he's trying to do this movie when Gilliam even said it couldn't be done.
Unfortunately, 300 and Watchmen are two completely different stories with completely different tones and subtleties. Taking on 300 just doesn't seem as impressive or challenging as something like Watchmen, which requires not only brawn but brains.
It's "Watchmen." Not "The Watchmen!" Dumbass! Get your facts straight before you come ranting your mouth off. If you know ANYTHING at all you would know that Snyder is the only director wanting to stay true to the novel. Look it up.
Oh yeah that's why he stayed true to the fact that his zombies were too stupid to OPEN a DOOR and yet one of them is intelligent enough to HANG from pipes in the ceiling to catch it's prey. Real consistency here.
jack snyder did a pretty good job with the 300 movie, he kept it faithful to the comic, theres one thing he must do to reapeat the success with watchmen, keep it faithful to the comics
if he tries to mkae it more present like instead of the cold war, iraq war, then he opened hand of the quality of watchmen
Plus who here thinks that Warner Brothers will really have the balls to try and film the original apocalyptic climax to Watchmen that has millions of people dead all across New York with it's echos of 9/11?
And you don't really get what you would call a happy ending at the end of Watchmen which I'm sure Warner Brothers would want to throw out and "improve" somehow, LOL.
Holy shit, he's going to piss all over the novel. 300 was bullshit, and is miles away from Watchmen in terms of scope, tone and density. And if he isn't using David Hayter's script (the only one approved by Moore), it's going to be complete bullshit. Gilliam was the only person who could've come close to doing Watchmen, and even he knew it was too big for him to even touch. This is going to be a debauchery.
Heh, its not like you can't make a good movie out of watchmen. If they first made a movie then the comic to flesh out the movie more nobody would be complaining but since its vice versa most people can't seem to wrap there head around what could be a good movie. I would like to see them make a book and Add more to the story, ya know, cause books really get into the heart and drama of a story unlike comics. =\
But comics don't have to describe a picture. Comics can sugest things without telling it. Wich was the reason why Watchmen won a Hugo award: Multilayer panles.
Shouldn't we wait for an actual trailer to be released before we make prelimenary judgements? Considering Snyder's faithful approach to "300," I don't see why "Watchmen" would be any different.
would make more sense as opposed to a make or break blockbuster, As a series you would have more time to build the characters world, Create all their background stories etc.
well if you look at say Stephen King movies and whatnot, this may open that option up for later. they make a movie now that will probably do alright (i'm one of the optimistic ones) - just like the Shining. and then later they will be able to pull out a mini series which will be incredibly close to the book. i see this as a possibility for great things
Stephen King had a hand in overseeing it and it was pretty mediocre, I prefer the Kubrick film myself, But The Shining is a horror story set in one location with three main characters, Moore's Watchmen is far more complex than that, If the storyline of Watchmen is deviated away from like Snyder will probably attempt such as giving Watchmen a happy ending having Dan kill Veidt etc,
Maybe this will be the first Great adaptation, but no, since we have only the cast and a release Date Rorschach and Dan will stop the explosion everyone will live, The Cold War will end and everyone lives happily ever after. Yup, that's exactly how it's going to happen, we know because we are all Dr. Manhattan and ale to see the future as if it was happening now.
I'm going to wait to judge the movie after I see it...
And IMHO Warner Brothers regards DC as nothing more than a cash cow for supplying it with comicbook characters to make a film franchise out of, With the outlook of throwing chewing gum at a ceiling and hoping it will stick, That's not even getting into the fact that comics and films are two separate artforms that are just not compatable
in general IMHO, Comic fans and Alan Moore fans have every right to be skeptical about this film.
Yes, you do have every right but just because a book is published by Scholastic doesn't mean it will be bad, just because a movie is made by Warner Brothers doesn't mean they'll piss on the original, sure there has been a bad track record for Alan Moore Adaptations, but just because the previous directors did poorly, doesn't mean that Jack Snyder should be tarred nd feathered before he even gets a second promotional poster done.
They haven't even finished filming yet, and people like you are calling it the biggest comic book flop of all time. Yes, 300 didn't have as deep a plot as Watchmen, but that doesn't mean Zack Snyder can't do a deep plot, he's done two movies, how about letting him build a resume before calling him a horrible director
Look Watchmen has about several different subplots, Dr Manhattan's persepective on time and reality isn't something that can really come across on film IMHO,
Joel Silver the same man who stated that Moore loved the 'V For Vendetta' film
(he didn't) which he produced will also be producing this film, Moore has disowned this entire film, Even Terry Gilliam feels that a Watchmen film wouldn't work.
Now I don't know Zack Snyder, But I wouldn't honestly think that Watchmen could translate from a comic to a film anymore than say 'Maus' or 'Acme Novelty Library'
would work as a film, Doing a Watchmen film is far more complicated than say doing a Spiderman film or a Batman film.
I'm sorry but the burden is pretty much on Snyder to persuade Alan Moore fans that a Watchmen film will work, Warner Brothers has IMHO had ONE comicbook film recently that was worthwhile 'Batman Begins', The rest of their roster has included films like 'Catwoman' 'Steel' 'Constantine'
'V For Vendetta' plus this upcoming
'Dark Knight' film with the sorry Joker makeup job circulating all over,
If fans don't trust WB to handle a Watchmen film it's a situation WB has brought on itself.
300 was monotonous and one-note. It was a popcorn movie. If you think that showed an indication that he can make a good Watchmen movie, you must not have read the book.
Not that I'm saying he's definitely going to fuck it up, but with 300 and Dawn of the Dead as his major successes, I think there's reason to be skeptical.
The source material wasn't anything really layered or complex, it was just macho guys running around shirtless and butchering effeminate Persians.
Watchmen is a lot more dense than that, and things are definitely going to be cut for the sake of time. (Terry Gilliam had once planned to make it a 12-hour miniseries) Granted, a lot of responsibility is also on the script writer, but Zack Snyder is going to take responsibility for it if it blows.
Read the graphic novel, watched the movie. Snyder is a good candidate. In regards to 300, it's the mistakes you DON'T make that sometimes indicate your skill. 300 would've been easy to screw-up, overwrite, or make too cheesy. He managed to avoid all three.
Be sure that that the studios are gonna cut all the political references
They don't want to people think, that was on the 70's not now
I mean c'mon they have to sell the watchmen action figures, they don't give a shit about the legacy of alan moore, they want idiots spending their money in movies about tits, racist jokes and gore
Yeah, I'm kind of bothered by the fact that there's an actor for Kennedy instead of Nixon. Come on, nobody's feelings for Kennedy are even close to their feelings on Nixon.
... I'm just scared that Zack will make the movie for the graphic novel too graphic and not novel enough. What if he adds more useless blood, gore, and sex to it like what he did to Dawn and 300. Those two were both great movies but the original source material was still better and Watchmen is Watchmen it isn't some zombie story or a gore-ified war its fricking Watchmen for Pete's sake! The greatest graphic novel of all time!!!
Your the one that's wrong on both counts. The original Dawn Of The Dead made killing Zombies look like a JOKE. They were just running right pass them easily. It was almost stupid somethimes.
Watchmen won't work as a film too people like you.
Watchmen won't work as a film because Moore's comics can't be translated to film and every attempt to do so has ended in failure ala From Hell, TLOEG,
and V For Vendetta, Plus The Constantine film which castrated one of his best creations.
of epic proportions, Doing a faithfull adaptation of 300 or Sin City is not the same thing as trying to shoehorn something on the epic and poetic scale of Watchmen into a Hollywood film.
Alan Moore has disowned just about every attempt to film his work, Those attempts were complete artistic failures, And not one of them came close to Moore's comics, Do you deny that?
People who respect Moore's work for the most part think that a Watchmen film will be a piece of crap.
Tell me something, How could a filmed version of Watchmen manage something like Dr Manhattans sudden flashbacks? which work perfectly as sequential art,
A film couldn't capture that,
Also in chapter 22 'A Stronger Loving World'
with the millions of dead people in Times Square and across New York,
Do you really think that Warner Brothers would let something like that be shown?
They would cut it because of similarities to 9/11 in a second.
Actually it made a lot more sense in the DOTD remake that the zombies over ran the world if they were fast because they would actually be able to catch a lot of people and bite them. If they were slow then it would be easy to aviod and kill them all.
Kill them all? I don't think so, That would have been an impossible task, Their slow speed makes perfect sense in their bodies when you take into account factors like decay, brain damage etc,
So what if the human body decays and it has brain damage after death. These are just fantasy movies. You do know that right? They don't have to make sense.
I don't wanna sound like a nerd but this guy is awful, michael bay is a better director, how did he get superman?!?!?! Looks at his past films, they've sucked donkey dick.

"If u didnt like 300, u prob won't like this movie then"
And how did you come to that well thought-out conclusion?
thamuzicaddict 3 years ago 8
300 was not terrible. It wassent amazing though. But take the directon and the story telling of 300 and put that on a great story like the Watchmen and you will have a great movie.
panag3 3 years ago
Are you serious? Have you read Watchmen? If you boil it down into xenophobia and mindless violence you will get a great movie?
Please explain this to me... I mean Watchmen had very little action in it, especially in context with other "super hero" stories. A director whose career "highlight" is 2 hours of masturbatory effects and violence shouldn't be allowed anywhere near it.
thespice311 3 years ago 13
You're pulling this out of context. Snyder didn't write 300, Frank Miller did. Frank Miller also wrote Sin City, which isn't more uplifting in its violent themes than 300 is. And don't forget that Frank Miller also wrote the now infamous 'I'm the goddamn Batman' line... If 300 was a good book-to-movie adaptation, I'm sure he'll do fine with Watchmen. The videoblogs have assured me that, except for the ending, this movie will be loyal to the original, and genius, work that is Watchmen.
Yuregenu 3 years ago
I do not understand the point of your post.
I just can't believe that a person with any sense would attempt a Watchmen adaptation WITHOUT the Watchmen ending.
thespice311 3 years ago
I have to agree with you here, 300 was nothing but one long action seen (which wasn't all that impressive by the way) which is okay when watching it once but watching it a second time just seems like a waste of time. However, I did like his remake of Dawn of the Dead, not loved but it wasn't bad.
They should have gotten a way better director for this film. Watchmen deserves the best, not a guy who only directed two motion pictures.
FuttBucker667 3 years ago 2
Another thing that is true. Watchmen without its ending is simply not Watchmen.
thrawnian 3 years ago 4
Watchmen is much more complicated than 300 or Sin City. Visually he will nail it. But narratively it will suck, no doubt about it.
The movie will suck. I mean, yeah, it'll be cool to watch at Dr. Manhattan but the essence will be lost. No matter how good a director you are, you just cannot make Watchmen into a movie. Its too complicated, frenetically non-lineal, the pirate comic book, the complementary texts at the end of each issue. You can't take all of it into a movie and make it work.
thrawnian 3 years ago 5
Okay, he is NOT changing the ending. He is only changing the fucking squid!!!! Did anybody listen to the interview or did they just listen to the fact that he is changing the squid to something else?

dont worry, it is. in an interview, snyder said he'll stay true to the comic, and make it the same time period instead of updating it.

a Watchmen movie has never been made, all attempts have fallen through. for once, someone is getting a foot hold. even if the movie is terrible, i'd like to see what they can do with it.
KingOfTheBritains 3 years ago
Wait, why should we appreciate the movie separately? It is a movie adaptation of the book. If it hopes to get off the hook of criticism by being appreciated separately, it has another thing coming.
It doesn't deserve a decent movie, it deserves better, and that is to be left as it was intended. Even if this movie is great, it'll be LESS than the book deserves.
PaidYouOff 3 years ago
Of course, but no movie ever is as good as its book or plotline. You can't even expect that. And, since we can't expect the movie to be like the book, we'd be doing both a disservice to judge them as the same thing. Jurassic park, Fight Club, 21, The Time Machine, etc These books were brilliant, but the movies were either all hollywood, loosely based on, completely different, or just plain terrible (in that order compared to the movies above) and these DID get off the literary comparison hook.
KingOfTheBritains 3 years ago
Not true. Sometimes a movie adaptation can tighten up and narrow down a book that needed some help (Fight Club, imo, is a much more streamlined and powerful movie than it is a book).
darthantisan 3 years ago 2
I'm just stating that for sake of the argument. I agree with you completely! sometimes a movie CAN make it a greater force. BUT, if it doesn't, it's not like the reader wasn't prepared for the movies failure, and just because the movie fails, doesn't mean the book will be any less powerful. and Fight Club is the perfect example of treating the two as separate entities. Palahniuk had the mind, but Fincher had the vision. Like a Rock cover of a Country song. Both are great, but appeal differently.
KingOfTheBritains 3 years ago
because you know they never touched the comic in there LIVES. its like those people who believe they "discovered" so and so band.
KingOfTheBritains 3 years ago
Watchmen doesn't NEED anything, it's fine as it is.
PaidYouOff 3 years ago
(the comment directly below was a response for someone else, the one relating to overuse of this all on myspace)
of COURSE it doesn't need a movie. its fine with out a movie. But you've never looked at the pages and wondered what it would look like in motion? on screen? You've never wished that you could bring Watchmen up in a conversation and expect people to know what it is? The comic will always be brilliant. Yes, a Watchmen movie is not necessary, but it's not at all detrimental either.
KingOfTheBritains 3 years ago
No, because I don't wish for more people to know about it. It's not that kind of item.
I bring it up around people I know have either read it or would appreciate it. In which case they don't need a movie to recommend it to them.
PaidYouOff 3 years ago
ahh that is where we differ.
KingOfTheBritains 3 years ago
Also, if you were to take a pole of 50 people, off the side walk. How many of them do you think would know Watchmen, the graphic novel? It deserves better. This is not the kind of book you horde and feel special knowing about. This is the kind of book you lend to as many people as you can. But, its hard. have you never gotten the eye roll? A comic book? This movie will blast them. It will show them that, though it may be a graphic novel, these are no run of the mill the-day-is-saved-superheros.
KingOfTheBritains 3 years ago
i agree with you 100%
kingsancho12 3 years ago
oh i agree completely king. its funny that you mention getting the eye roll. i alomost always get some sort of reaction like im immature or something. Its hard to get it through to people the amount of detail and incredible story telling that is in this novel. all they see is a childs comic... untill all the blood i guess. as for the movie i hope it is good, i have high expectations and the trailor blew me away. slightly different from the novel but amazing non the less.

i agree with stansfield. and what the fuck, zack snyder? directing watchmen? just listen to the guy. him trying to understand watchmen is like dr. malcolm trying to understand rorschach.
browndaisies 3 years ago
Putting aside the fact that Hollywood thrives by making stories simple enough for the greatest number of morons, this film will fail because it can't be true to the comic's most basic aspects. I don't give a fuck about "word for word," "character for character," etc. The people who insist that a mini-series would be better are just as wrong as Snyder. The problem is that almost everything great about Watchmen is inextricably linked to reciprocally connected, static images. That's how it works.
stansfield8 3 years ago 2

And you were supposed to ask if I want cries with my waaahburger. If they fuck this one up remind me never to go and watch another superhero movie ever again!!
LILACTIME 3 years ago
The plot and characters can be put in a movie, but that medium is fundamentally incapable of being faithful to what makes this comic great. So if Snyder really believes his movie can be true to the story's spirit, he doesn't really get it, and that's a solid reason to avoid the thing. He should've just told a tale in that universe instead of trying to adapt something that can't be adapted well.

Unfortunately, 300 and Watchmen are two completely different stories with completely different tones and subtleties. Taking on 300 just doesn't seem as impressive or challenging as something like Watchmen, which requires not only brawn but brains.

Plus who here thinks that Warner Brothers will really have the balls to try and film the original apocalyptic climax to Watchmen that has millions of people dead all across New York with it's echos of 9/11?
And you don't really get what you would call a happy ending at the end of Watchmen which I'm sure Warner Brothers would want to throw out and "improve" somehow, LOL.
cha5 4 years ago
Holy shit, he's going to piss all over the novel. 300 was bullshit, and is miles away from Watchmen in terms of scope, tone and density. And if he isn't using David Hayter's script (the only one approved by Moore), it's going to be complete bullshit. Gilliam was the only person who could've come close to doing Watchmen, and even he knew it was too big for him to even touch. This is going to be a debauchery.

apologyisnothepolicy 4 years ago
Heh, its not like you can't make a good movie out of watchmen. If they first made a movie then the comic to flesh out the movie more nobody would be complaining but since its vice versa most people can't seem to wrap there head around what could be a good movie. I would like to see them make a book and Add more to the story, ya know, cause books really get into the heart and drama of a story unlike comics. =\

Comics can, it's just that books can do it better because they don't have to save room for pictures.

i think Watchmen would work great as a 12-part series on HBO or Showtime, but not so much as a single movie.

rowsdowersavesus 4 years ago
Shouldn't we wait for an actual trailer to be released before we make prelimenary judgements? Considering Snyder's faithful approach to "300," I don't see why "Watchmen" would be any different.
Just a thought.
trappedsoul 4 years ago
Because Trappedsoul 300 is not Watchmen,
They are totally different works,
I think grendelvs is right an HBO series
would make more sense as opposed to a make or break blockbuster, As a series you would have more time to build the characters world, Create all their background stories etc.
cha5 4 years ago
I still have my doubts that film or tv could do justice to Watchmen, Most comic fans think it's impossible to try to shoehorn Watchmen into a film
and have it not come across as anything but a fuckup,
Maybe this will be the greatest comicbook film ever,
And the trailer will prove me wrong,
I just doubt it myself with Hollywoods track record.
cha5 4 years ago
well if you look at say Stephen King movies and whatnot, this may open that option up for later. they make a movie now that will probably do alright (i'm one of the optimistic ones) - just like the Shining. and then later they will be able to pull out a mini series which will be incredibly close to the book. i see this as a possibility for great things
Sdrwckab 4 years ago
Uh The Shining stunk as a mini series IMHO,
Stephen King had a hand in overseeing it and it was pretty mediocre, I prefer the Kubrick film myself, But The Shining is a horror story set in one location with three main characters, Moore's Watchmen is far more complex than that, If the storyline of Watchmen is deviated away from like Snyder will probably attempt such as giving Watchmen a happy ending having Dan kill Veidt etc,
The whole film becomes a pointless joke.
cha5 4 years ago
I'm a pessimist about this film,
Given Hollywoods track record with
Moore's comics his characters,
The fact that every single attempt to bring them to the big screen has been a complete and utter fuck up,
And the fact that even Terry Gilliam didn't think it was possible to create a film that would do justice to Watchmen.
IMHO neither Warner Brothers nor Zach Snyder
will do anything except create a travesty of one of the all time comic masterpieces.
cha5 4 years ago
Um, what makes everybody think Snyder is going to change the ending? How about we wait until it comes out...
No we have to crucify Zack Snyder, how dare he screw Alan Moore with all his previous adaptations!
OH WAIT! HE HAS ONLY MADE TWO MOVIES AND NEITHER ONE HAS BEEN A MOORE ADAPTATION!
IMnerd719 4 years ago
Maybe this will be the first Great adaptation, but no, since we have only the cast and a release Date Rorschach and Dan will stop the explosion everyone will live, The Cold War will end and everyone lives happily ever after. Yup, that's exactly how it's going to happen, we know because we are all Dr. Manhattan and ale to see the future as if it was happening now.
I'm going to wait to judge the movie after I see it...
IMnerd719 4 years ago
Well I'm just a cynic about these things,
Being that Warner Brothers gave us
V For Vendetta and the Constantine film,
One a comic created by Moore another a character of Moore's and screwed them both up,
Snyder did do 300 but that's totally different than Watchmen,
I have a hard time seeing how Watchmen could be translated to film,
I'm biased in the fact that IMHO Snyder's film will never come close to Moore's comic.
cha5 4 years ago
And IMHO Warner Brothers regards DC as nothing more than a cash cow for supplying it with comicbook characters to make a film franchise out of, With the outlook of throwing chewing gum at a ceiling and hoping it will stick, That's not even getting into the fact that comics and films are two separate artforms that are just not compatable
in general IMHO, Comic fans and Alan Moore fans have every right to be skeptical about this film.
cha5 4 years ago 2
Yes, you do have every right but just because a book is published by Scholastic doesn't mean it will be bad, just because a movie is made by Warner Brothers doesn't mean they'll piss on the original, sure there has been a bad track record for Alan Moore Adaptations, but just because the previous directors did poorly, doesn't mean that Jack Snyder should be tarred nd feathered before he even gets a second promotional poster done.
IMnerd719 4 years ago
Scholastic?
cha5 4 years ago
They are a big book publisher, they publish Harry Potter, um The Golden Compass, and a lot of other big name books.
IMnerd719 4 years ago
I know LOL,
Sorry, A lame attempt at humor on my part.
cha5 4 years ago
They haven't even finished filming yet, and people like you are calling it the biggest comic book flop of all time. Yes, 300 didn't have as deep a plot as Watchmen, but that doesn't mean Zack Snyder can't do a deep plot, he's done two movies, how about letting him build a resume before calling him a horrible director
IMnerd719 4 years ago
Look Watchmen has about several different subplots, Dr Manhattan's persepective on time and reality isn't something that can really come across on film IMHO,
Joel Silver the same man who stated that Moore loved the 'V For Vendetta' film
(he didn't) which he produced will also be producing this film, Moore has disowned this entire film, Even Terry Gilliam feels that a Watchmen film wouldn't work.
cha5 4 years ago 2
Now I don't know Zack Snyder, But I wouldn't honestly think that Watchmen could translate from a comic to a film anymore than say 'Maus' or 'Acme Novelty Library'
would work as a film, Doing a Watchmen film is far more complicated than say doing a Spiderman film or a Batman film.
cha5 4 years ago 3
I'm sorry but the burden is pretty much on Snyder to persuade Alan Moore fans that a Watchmen film will work, Warner Brothers has IMHO had ONE comicbook film recently that was worthwhile 'Batman Begins', The rest of their roster has included films like 'Catwoman' 'Steel' 'Constantine'
'V For Vendetta' plus this upcoming
'Dark Knight' film with the sorry Joker makeup job circulating all over,
If fans don't trust WB to handle a Watchmen film it's a situation WB has brought on itself.
cha5 4 years ago
300 was monotonous and one-note. It was a popcorn movie. If you think that showed an indication that he can make a good Watchmen movie, you must not have read the book.
Not that I'm saying he's definitely going to fuck it up, but with 300 and Dawn of the Dead as his major successes, I think there's reason to be skeptical.
thamuzicaddict 4 years ago
It was a graphic novel, and it was translated nearly verbatim. If it wasn't good, that's a lot to do with the source material.
trappedsoul 4 years ago
That's what I'm saying.
The source material wasn't anything really layered or complex, it was just macho guys running around shirtless and butchering effeminate Persians.
Watchmen is a lot more dense than that, and things are definitely going to be cut for the sake of time. (Terry Gilliam had once planned to make it a 12-hour miniseries) Granted, a lot of responsibility is also on the script writer, but Zack Snyder is going to take responsibility for it if it blows.
thamuzicaddict 4 years ago
Read the graphic novel, watched the movie. Snyder is a good candidate. In regards to 300, it's the mistakes you DON'T make that sometimes indicate your skill. 300 would've been easy to screw-up, overwrite, or make too cheesy. He managed to avoid all three.
EGarrett01 4 years ago
Be sure that that the studios are gonna cut all the political references
They don't want to people think, that was on the 70's not now

apologyisnothepolicy 4 years ago 2

And Watchmen was written in the 80s not the 70s.

..for the sake of the only comic book that truly deserves to be called a graphic novel, I hope you're right.
killemal 4 years ago
The greatest graphic novel of all time!!!
sofakingHansen 4 years ago
The original Dawn was silly. The remake of Dawn was a whole lot better.
Zack will do a great job on the Watchmen.
Area51Agent 4 years ago
Wrong on both counts the original Dawn was the best,
And Watchmen won't work as a film.
cha5 4 years ago
Your the one that's wrong on both counts. The original Dawn Of The Dead made killing Zombies look like a JOKE. They were just running right pass them easily. It was almost stupid somethimes.
Watchmen won't work as a film too people like you.
Area51Agent 4 years ago
In the remake the Zombies were running like sprinters,
Which makes no sense whatsoever, In the original they were a slow but steady never ending mass of humanity
and the main characters were far more interesting and it had a stronger sense of satire which worked far better than the remake.
cha5 4 years ago
Watchmen won't work as a film because Moore's comics can't be translated to film and every attempt to do so has ended in failure ala From Hell, TLOEG,
and V For Vendetta, Plus The Constantine film which castrated one of his best creations.
Watchmen will be no different.
cha5 4 years ago
Actually there will be a difference,
The Watchmen film will be an artistic disaster
of epic proportions, Doing a faithfull adaptation of 300 or Sin City is not the same thing as trying to shoehorn something on the epic and poetic scale of Watchmen into a Hollywood film.
cha5 4 years ago
Those every attempts ended in failure to YOU. Do you think people actually care what you people think?
Area51Agent 4 years ago
Alan Moore has disowned just about every attempt to film his work, Those attempts were complete artistic failures, And not one of them came close to Moore's comics, Do you deny that?
People who respect Moore's work for the most part think that a Watchmen film will be a piece of crap.
cha5 4 years ago
Tell me something, How could a filmed version of Watchmen manage something like Dr Manhattans sudden flashbacks? which work perfectly as sequential art,
A film couldn't capture that,
Also in chapter 22 'A Stronger Loving World'
with the millions of dead people in Times Square and across New York,
Do you really think that Warner Brothers would let something like that be shown?
They would cut it because of similarities to 9/11 in a second.
cha5 4 years ago
in an interview with Terry Gilliam, Moore was asked
"Tell me Alan, How would you make a Watchmen film?"
Moore's answer "Well to be perfectly honest Terry, I wouldn't"
His answer speaks for itself and makes perfect sense,
Hollywood doesn't have the artistic integrity to make
a Watchmen film.
cha5 4 years ago
Hey man, guess what. People don't care. They'll make Watchmen into a movie anyway and other people will enjoy it.
Area51Agent 4 years ago
Depends on the people, If you mean your general film goer probably not, Moore fans and comic fans will,
Sequential Art and films are not compatable.
And a Watchmen film is a stupid idea.
cha5 4 years ago
People can enjoy all sorts of crap,
That doesn't make a Watchmen movie a good or worthwhile project.
cha5 4 years ago
You haven't given one reason why we need a Watchmen film, Or how such a film could ever possibly measure up to Moore and Gibbon's work,
Wachmen can't work as a film anymore than Maus or
Acme Novelty Library, There are certain things that any attempt to film them will be a complete and utter fuck up, Watchmen is one of those things.

Actually it made a lot more sense in the DOTD remake that the zombies over ran the world if they were fast because they would actually be able to catch a lot of people and bite them. If they were slow then it would be easy to aviod and kill them all.

Kill them all? I don't think so, That would have been an impossible task, Their slow speed makes perfect sense in their bodies when you take into account factors like decay, brain damage etc,
The Zombies running like track athletes doesn't.

So what if the human body decays and it has brain damage after death. These are just fantasy movies. You do know that right? They don't have to make sense.

Yes I know that, In the original Romero NOTLD and DOTD
it just works and makes more sense IMHO.
