Thank you Joni for this unique and superbe memorial for both Mingus and Pastorius! This is truely your finest album ever. I've listened millions of times to it and danced and sang along and chuckled like crazy as Jaco's fingers scuttled up and down the neck of his bass as if he would do this on my own neck – o world, what a cool time we're livin' in and what a misery, that all this has to end like this song!
SORRY BUT WHO THE FUCK DISLIKED THIS SONG? THEY DESERVE TO GET RAPED BY A SPIKY DILDO, CUT UP BY A RUSTY CHAINSAW, AND EXILED TO SIBERIA IN A BOX THATS TOO SMALL FOR EM TO FIT IN. CUNTS.
Everybody wants to talk about Jaco, thats fine & well - but that particular subject has been debated for time eternal...what about Joni's vocals?? She is incredible when singing jazz!!
No one has been able to able to combine bass and horn section riffs like Jaco.......it is a tragic situation he wasnt able to evolve into a more mature artist and work with many artists.....like Quincy.......still the work stands up and not too many bass players can top it........he was the most exciting jazz artist of the 1970s........
@dojufitz I think Gary Willis has absolutely achieved Pastorius' level; he even surpassed it in some points. Yet of course there is bass before and after Pastorius.
@Listendudeok I'm more dissapointed that Jaco did not go on to work with many other artists who would have opened him up even more.........he had alot to give.....as far as playing goes.....there are alot of clones out there but what do they come up with.....? Bass that sounds like Jaco.....
@dojufitz You are right. Even the great Gary Willis (don't know if you are familiar with him) sounds a bit like Pastorius sometimes, admittedly. The problem is Pastorius had a difficult personality, with tendency to abuse alcohol and other things. It deteriorated him as time went by. He was bipolar, and ran into difficulties with other people. Nevertheless, he's a monument and a musical genius. No doubt.
@Listendudeok My feelings about Jaco are.... he left some stunning gems for us to marvel at but he got into drugs and booze that affected his employment......many musicians have suffered the same fate......i don't know if Gary Willis writes horn arrangements....but that aspect of Jaco's really elevated him into special status......Jaco also limited himself by saying silly things like 'I won't work with other keyboard players outta respect for Zawinul'. What! No wonder he turned to drink! lol!
thanks MCGEHEE1.it's nice to breathe the rarified air of "enlightened" music lovers & Jaco was indeed a master arranger as well. i think his & Joni's collaborations are some of the best music ever produced!
Jaco, you changed the whole world of music. We miss you so much..... why in the world the doctors didn't help you being bipolar.... you would be with us....
jaco pastorius made this song as great as it is, in my opinion. it kinda helps, you know... if you have the world's best bassist playing with you. JACO FTW
i'm a bassist at heart, and i only stumbled into joni mitchell because of her work with jaco, but i gotta say the vocals in this song are as good as the bass line.

@Dengee actually it's most likely Michael Brecker dude.

No, it's Wayne Shorter. Michael Brecker replaced him on the live tour that followed.

@TinkleFIEND
Yes it does :)
Jaco improved every song he participated
in, and brought them to another level.
In this song he demonstrates his unique
ability to combine extremely groovy licks
with blazing fast runs. Perfection!
Pastorius333 1 year ago
@Pastorius333 also don't forget thie horn arrangement is Jaco's.
mrcndrn 1 year ago 3
@mrcndrn
Yes, that's also a great contribution Jaco
made to this song. It wasn't Joni's intention
to have a horn-section in this song, but in
the recording-studio Jaco told her that he
felt that a horn-section would make it even
better so he wrote out the horn-lines/arrangements
at night and went back to the recording-studio
the next morning. A true musical genius.
