  • Concerning LIONEL trains you are invited to read a more detailed comment posted here in my channel. Your comments are welcome.

  • Hi. Maybe these sets can not run any more but are in perfect condition for minor repairs to mount a static display in a wall. The orange locomotives seems to be AEOLUS that used to haul the streamlined HIAWATHA from Chicago to Milwaukee.

  • that red on looks like the red comet

  • @MrLegofatcat I know it originally was a marxs wind up train thanks

  • If you need any info to help, ask me.

  • I have the same coffee table! What a coinkidink.

  • hi its hannah's brother i have lionels i now what thoes trains are

  • this looks similar to the 221 dreyfuss made in 1946 & 47

  • train 3 is run with TMCC i belive

  • Train # 2's loco is the shell from a prewar Clockwork Marx Commodore Vanderbilt with a prewar Lionel motor inside. The missing smokestack is still available. The rest of the set is Lionel prewar. The slot had a protruding lever to turn the clockwork motor off and on. The 1656 switcher with the bell ringing tender is postwar, 1946-47 and is a very desirable engine and tender.

    They are all great trains!

  • you have some good looking trains here,,the 224 is a good one and the 2023 diesel isnt bad and fairly collectable,,I have 3 or 4 of the 224's and love them and thy are prewar,,the 2023 diesel is postwar,,I like them.

  • Hi Mike. Your 224E Steam Locomotive is a highly collectable engine. It has the Baldwin Drive wheels , with no magna traction. The coal tender that comes with the steam locomotive has a metal whistle housing. Where the post war whistles have a plastic whistle housing. Take good care of them. Very nice video

  • @LOMBARDISPACKERS1 Thanks for the info

  • The 2023 in yellow and gray is from 1950 and was introduced to celebrate Lionel's 50th anniversary. The powered and non powered units were available for separate sale as well as being included in the Anniversary outfit that year which consisted of three passenger cars that were painted the same colors as the 2023's. The 2023's are known as A L C O diesels for the American Locomotive Company and are very high quality and sought after models but with patience nice examples can be found on ebay.

  • you got a nice collection here, i can tell you a little but about that red locomotive, the body is from a Marx Wind up Commodore Vandebuilt, and the motor is a lionel motor, someone kitbashed it.

  • I have a few of these older type cars and engines but mostly have the postwar,,,I do love the prewar though and have quiet a few of them,,yours looks good.

  • Ton to operate it. Hope you can get them running!

  • Very interesting collection, I love vintage lionel train a lot better than the new ones, you can buy the track so that you can operate the couplers, you you a Lionel or mth uncouple/unload track. For that red passenger car you could buy the couplers at a train parts store, all you would have to do is find the right ones and snap them on to the axles. The controller you have is really cool I've never seen one like it, the engines usually have the whistle in their coal cars and you press the but

  • that yellow 2023 alco diesel was a 1950 only #1464w set its called by many collectors the 50th anvy set if you get the other 2023 engine and the three yellow and red stipe passenger cars 2481 2482 & 2383 the book value somewere around $4,000 or $5,000 bucks that is a realy nice set to have i had the silver 2023 alco diesel passnger made the year after yours in 1951 made the same way but didd colors and had less value just wanted to let you know in case you ever wanted to complete this set

  • the red lionel engine is a 1934 or 1935 windup hope you have the ture key for it if thats the real paint job from lionel in the mid 1930s then theres a good chanes thats the mickey mouse circus train set worth big bucks but the tender and the cars you have dont go with it thay did have cars like that but thay had single wheel trucks and i love that #1656 shitcher and bell ringer tender 5 stars

  • @grizzleybearz282004 the red one is a marx windup train shell that was mounted to a Lionel running gear its still pretty cool though

  • @madmike1981 ya just run it and complete the sets

  • the electric coupler you need a DCC remote from lionel or MTH. Make sure it is compatable though

  • With regard to the wooden cars: I've read where some creative Lionel Service Stations (especially Madison Hardware), when confronted with war time shortages, would often make their own cars out of spare parts with the bodies often being made from wood. This could be the case or maybe your grandpa made them himself.

  • @janisjade1 Thanks for the info I did not know they did that. I do know my grandpa didnt make them he got all of these from a cabin he bought in the 60s.

  • With regard to the 1656 steam engine: I love that engine, wanted one all of my life and actually got one as a Christmas present in 2010. The tender has a bell and contains the E-Unit (responsible for the forward-neutral-reverse movement of the engine). It is a delightful little engine and such a wonderful personality to it. Run it and you'll see. It was made in 1948-1949.

  • There's some very nice trains that you've acquired there. I also have a set that I've received from my grandfather, nothing rare or unusual but with great sentimental value, so I do understand where you're coming from.

I happen to know a lot about old toy trains, particularly prewar and early postwar pieces like these. I could answer some of your questions about these if you'd like.

  • @ArrantProfessor12 Id really like to know what the red locomotive is however since the others have numbers I can find them on google but that red one is driving me nuts I looked through about 10,000 pics and still cant find that body style

  • @madmike1981: I'm about 98% sure that I know what that is. It's a Commodore Vanderbilt shell from a Marx windup train (that hole on the side is for the key) jury-rigged onto a late prewar Lionel motor. Look up "Marx Commodore" on eBay and you can see what I mean.

  • @ArrantProfessor12 Thanks I never would of guessed that I looked at the pics on google of the Commodore Vanderbilt its got to be that even where it latches to to coal tender is identical to the Marx thats kind of cool that someone did that. Thanks again

  • @madmike1981 No problem.
