He wasnt like that before the movie, he deliberately lost weight just for the movie, much like Robert De Niro gained weight for "Raging Bull".

Actors get a shit load of extra money for stuff like this.

And since Matt Damon was pretty much beginning his career back then he needed to do stuff like that.

Matt Damon was AWESOME in this movie. The way he transformed himself to show a soldier who was so psychologically tormented - he's one of those actors I place up there with Meryl Streep. Just great at everything he does.

i always found weird that Meg Ryan played in this movie. She is so much of a Romantic type of actress...I mean to play in romantic movies. But it's amazing to see that sweetness of hers in this type too. I guess she is just this perfect actress. Amazing indeed
