Lana Lang is a typical dumb broad: Get knocked up by a bad boy and then go running to a "nice guy" like Clark AFTER to take care of her bastard child. Yet when Lana was in High School she wanted nothing to do with Clark, romantically. She only wanted bad boy cock. Suddenly though Clark is good enough for her now that the bad boys abandoned her, and she's broken down with a kid. Typical.
eh, i still enjoy it more that supes 4 & it about ties with returns. but as a kid watching this movie i always thought it was a halfassed movie version of brainiac & bizzaro.
Superman II completely done by Richard Lester? Supes vs the Three Stooges? Richard Pryor, great comedian, bad actor! Pryor as a computer whiz is hard to swallow. Especially since we are introduced to him, not as a smart guy working a menial job, but in line at the unemployment office. Couldn't Gus be flipping burgers, then help his boss with a computer glitch and notice the fractions of a cent from all their paychecks?
Great review and analysis of why this film doesn't work. I'll add a couple of points. The scriptwriters (neither Puzo nor Mankeweitz(?) were involved. The film feels very calculated, the exact opposite in spirit to Donner. The missile attack effects at the end feel cheap and a cheat when they change to video game graphics. Pryor is taken out of his normal context and left without any way to be actually funny or relevent. There is no dramatic or emotional connection with I & II.
I agree with you for the most part, but I can't help thinking you're taking a SUPERHERO movie a little too seriously. What I like about the Superman movies is that they don't take themselves seriously, which makes them so lovable. But with that said, I agree that Lester was TERRIBLE, and clearly didn't take Superman seriously enough.
Also I'm biased - This was the first movie I ever watched, as in, I was 2 years old and it's the first movie I ever remember watching and I loved it but now know
honestly i gotta admit as hokey as this movie is... i kinda prefer it over the second one... richard pryer is NOT that bad... but hey thats my opinion... id watch this before i watched the crappy second movie.. i reckon the 2nd movie takes itself too serious and comes off as lame ... but i have yet to see the donner cut..
To be honest I found Robert Vaugn's character Webster in the film to be a better Lex Luthor than the film series actual Lex Luthor(s) Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey.
You give the director way to much credit... This is one of the first "modern movies, in the fact that like most big movies that are made now. this is a movie made by a ton of investors who have no creative thoughts. there was a meeting that went something like,
Atari my kids love Atari!

Lois arrgh I hate her does he have any other girlfriends!?
Richard Pryor does a superman gag in his stand-up act! I loked the man from UNCLE! whats that guys name in that show? yeah get him too!
Great review as always. I never understood this character of Lana 'Lane'(? or is it 'lang') I mean it always seemed like to me that shes just a 'diet Lois Lane' maybe even her sister as she has the same last name (talk about contrived &even if its not the SAME last name both her names begin with the same 'l'etter as Superman/Clark's most famous and virtually ONLY love intrest (and now wife right?) - sorry I never knew a great deal about the Superman lure. But whats her purpose? is it Lana LanG?
@CubbieBear1980 It is Lana Lang. She's suposed to be Clark's high school sweetheart, a relationship that never quite worked out but they still have enormous affection for each other, and the dynamic that sometimes makes it interesting is that she's one of the only people who knows Clark is Superman. Even knowing that, it's still a relationship that didn't pan out. Unlike Lois, Clark and Superman being the same person doesn't seem to factor so much into the equation.
@Geekvolution And yes, the LL thing seems goofy, but remember, most of this stuff was dreamed up in the 40s and 50s, when those kinds of conveniences were pretty commonplace. You want contrived? Throw Lex Luthor in there too! And how about all those stories where Lois and Lex nearly get married!
I don't think it's making Kryptonite, but scanning Superman to find a type of radiation that can harm him and then emitting just the energy that Kryptonite would normally put out. So somehow it can do at least that
Personally, my biggest complaint was the lack of continuity as far as romance was allowed in Superman's life. In Superman II, didn't Clark have to give up his powers to be with Lois? But that's not an issue where Lana's concerned?
@thesyfychannel15 Great idea to use Morgan Edge, really any incarnation of him could be effective. I actually like the mob boss version from Smallville, but part of that was an excellent actor (at least, before he got a face-change).
If I had to choose between Superman III and Batman Forever, I'd choose Batman Forever because they focused more on themes of revenge and power. Superman III doesn't concentrate on themes. Does it have a message? No. Batman Forever may have been silly at some points but at least it focused on themes and I'm not sure whether there was a message but if there was one I'd say it was "Revenge isn't the answer". Superman III's message? There wasn't one.
Captain Logan, you should google Illya Salkinds 8 page treatment for Superman 3. The story idea he had was horrible on so many levels. That's what tonystark106422 is talking about. Thank God! Warner Bros had the smarts not say "NO!" to it.
I'd 've given it a 1.5. Not saying much obviously. But you hit the nail on the head about how they had so many good ideas, but by trying to stuff them all into one movie they were all ruined.
dude i hate when characters learn from thier mistakes. its unrealistic to expect that..
and itys so afterschool specdial and disney. so i liked that gus kept on being gus. i laugh at how cool and unwishy-washy he was. learning from his shortcomings or mistakes? LOL good one. good one.
Superman and Batman went throw the exact same road with there 4 movies. And the same guy is pulling them out of the shitocean, even if not in the same work-role.
No they didn't. Batman Forever was a much better movie than Superman III, and is only disliked as much as it is because it wasn't directed by Tim Burton, that Michael Keaton wasn't Batman, and that it was from the same director as BATMAN & ROBIN.
The only real flaw with FOREVER was the portrayal of Two-Face which was way to electric, and if you look at interviews from before the film's release Schummacher talked a lot about how Jones refused to listen to him in his attempts not to get upstaged by Jim Carrey
Where SUPERMAN III's themes got muddled, FOREVER's themes of Bruce dealing with his past and helping Dick go down the right road worked well. It's only hated so much because its the same director as Batman&Robin.
@Geekvolution Apparently, the orignal script (at some point) the film was supposed to include Brainiac (the Real Brainiac, not Gus' computer), Supergirl, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. Thoughts?
I find it kind of neat that Lana Lang is the same person that plays Martha Kent in the tv series Smallville. Too bad the two never had a scene together in Smallville while Reeve was still alive. :(
I've always thought it interesting that (I think at least) Superman's build in this film is probably closet to the comics or is that just me? Of course Christopher Reeve had put on weight since Superman 1 but I do think when he bulked up for 3 it made his build appear closer to the comics than previously seen.
@metfilmguy2009 I agree Reeve was definately at his peak muscular build in this movie but like what Singer said for the reasons for a costume change for Returns were that the old spandex type costume was not good for showing definition, which I tend to agree with but the Returns costume looked like a plastic action figure! In a different costume maybe it would have been easier to see that Reeve was a lot bigger than he appeared in this costume and did put in a lot of gym work for the movies
IIRC, Lois never printed anything about kryptonite. She printed his inability to see through lead allright, but Superman's weakness to the green was something that Lex figured out through plot convenience.
Aah, Richard Pryor. An actor whose very presence is an announcement: "THIS IS THE 80's". Even when it's off by a year or two.
I thought "what? An evil corporate tycoon other than Lex Luthor?". I suppose that's not so crazy, but it still seems wrong.
Part of the trouble with Smallville is that Hollywood has *never* understood rural America. Never. Small towns, agricultural communities, extended families... these are always sloppily cardboard-ized in movies, sadly.
I agree with the Captain for the most part. The film isn't anything to write home about, and outside of the Clark vs. Bad Supes fight, and some other key scenes, the film as a whole is anything but memorable. Though I will saw the Smallville scenes do have a certain charm about them.
I still like the movie for bad reasons. I still think Smallville felt like Superman's home. The fight scenes were interesting and the rescue scene in the beginning of the movie is the best one ever.

Here's an idea:
Morgan Edge as the main villain.
Gus' computer evolving into Brainiac.
Ultraman or Bizarro being the secondary villain in place of Evil Superman.
The villains in this movie really pissed me off. And using classic villains would've made a better film.
