this was a sad day i will never forget it. I loved watching him play on TV and what he did after they won the Cup in 2001 was just wonderful. Thank you for the wonderful years for us Avs fans
man, this season is the worst imo. my two favourite players of all time, sakic and sundin retire. funny how they both played together in quebec. both classy guys and the game with miss super joe
love you burnaby joe, u were, and always will be my idol, i remember the put-away goal u scored against the USA in the 02' olympics, greatest goal i have ever seen in my life. you will be missed in the NHL
Yes but I think he won't just play for the sake of playing in his hometown. He is not going to jeopardize Team Canada's chances by not being able to perform at a level he needs and wants to.
The fact that he's not playing shows how great he is. You know he'd love more than anything to play in Vancouver in 2010 but knows he's not up to it. He'd do anything to help his team win even if it means not playing. That's why he's one of the greatest captains and leaders in hockey history.
Yea, sad to see him hang them up. Wanted to see him suit up one more year for 2010 but it's not fair to others as he won't play if he can't play at a high level.
Joe Sakic: Best player of all time.

Another hardcore wings fan, but Joe was an amazing captain and truly did great things for the sport of hockey.

As a lifelong Red Wing fan, I'll miss him for contributing to that amazingly fun and heated Wings/Aves rivalry.

I was gettin choked up watching this! Atta boy Joe! Talent and class for the ages. This hockey player truly embodies all that a Hero is.
It will remain a mystery to us mortals how he could get that wrist shot off with the speed and accuracy (off of either foot!) of a laser beam.

Say it ain't so! You know this decision didn't come easy. He had a chance to play in the Olympics in front of his family and friends in Van-city.
