Hair colour bares no relevance once you've looked into CD'es eyes. They have a calculating stare that looks like he's figured out how to screw you over six ways before he's even said hello.
Charles Dance is in the upcoming British gangster film "St George's Day", you should really check it out! We are on FB StGeorgesDayMovie and Twitter @StGeorgesDay
Jeremy Irons just didn't seem anywhere near sinister enough. I was upset at the casting for Vetenari in this movie, but when I heard the way he delivered the line "Don't let me detain you." my doubts were banished.
When I first saw Mr. Irons as Vetinari it was 100% satisfying, but after seeing Mr. Dances performation, I totaly forgot about his hair color after 20 seconds of his acting and therefor I must put him on top. And I'd really like to see Moist von Lipwicks adventure Making Money soon, with the same cast!
Irons was all right when he played the part, but Dance is perfect! He's got that whole quiet menace thing down pat. I certainly wouldn't want to aggravate him.
Although I still think, that Jeremy Irons in (Colours of magic) ist the real Vetinary, I must say, that Charles Dance ist the Vize-Patrician, blond or not. And when "PTerry" says, he's ok, so he 's ok for me, too.
@balkoth1984: Why? Apart from the hair colour Dances does not only look exactely like Vetinari (like described in the book and shown in the drawings that Terry findes spot on), his performance is absolutely pitch perfect aswell. Jeremy is a fine actor but he didn't even come close to nailing this as brilliant as Dances does. It's like he just walked out of one of the books right onto the screen!
What kind of tie is Vetinari wearing? I realize that it is a cravat, but what is it specifically called?
Furthermore, I agree about the hair not being as important as his acting. Dances really changed my perception of Vetinari when I read(Irons didn't have the same effect), he is spot on.
for me too, the hair colour didn´t matter one bit, once i´d seen charles dance´s vetinari in his first scene. he is just great - the quiet menace, the authority, but also the - very idisynchratic - sense of humour. i feel they have found the perfect actor and i wish he´ll stay on for the next adaptations...
@dayiiv: I guess because dyed hair would have looked artificial, just like Irons' acting was (as much as I like him in other roles) and they didn't want to mess with the realism of Dances acting. Dye his hair and the frist thing you think is.. oh, they dyed the hair of the actor. I'm glad they didn't.
I did find myself not giving a crap about his hair colour. No offence to you guys, but I really felt Dances captured the haughtiness, the intellect and, above all, the overwhelming sense of quiet authority that really made the Patrician my favourite character. I found Irons abit too rough for it, but Dance is just right.
@knight1172 I agree. i also felt that Orons didn't take the part seriously. Therer seemed a misconstued reference to Monty Pythons life of Brina that didn't work.
I can't bring myself to enjoy this film though. The cast is brilliant, and the screenplay decent. But the directing, and the setting just feel awkward and unproffesional. Like the last two films it feels to small and enclosed. The music score is trite aswell
@knight1172. I totaly agree. What matters is his ablity to play the role. If he is a good enough actor you ought to be able to forget his hair colour is not right. Or that he is a bit shorter, taller, fatter thiner whatever.
I guess I always pictured Vetinari with black hair when reading the books. However, that bit where Lipwig makes the joke about death warrants - Dance has got the reaction just right

He's a flawless Vetinari but he doesen't make the character stand out. it's a bit bland really. I hope we get a third vetinari in the next tv movie!

I always hear the joke that "no wonder Tywin is such a magnificent bastard, he's vetinari!" And I agree.
Much as I liked Jeremy Irons as Vetinari, Charles Dance is also a terrific actor. So I'm good wif it.

@HighlordAwesome - as for the tie... it looks like one of those stiff thingies called a wing collar...
ShabrinAlessi 1 year ago
@ShabrinAlessi The collar is an ascott collar. I am asking about the tie.
HighlordAwesome 1 year ago
@HighlordAwesome Looks a bit like a puff tie.

I think, it could have been worse...
irons wasn't that bad but dance and irons both don't fit the bill...
Maybe i'm too picky since I saw the ultimate picture of Vetinari, drawn by Julie Dilons.
But I liked the scene Between him and Gilt.
Don't let me detain you :D

on the one hand dance fits so perfect by his acting and look.
on the other hand irons did look and played it very good also...

Vetinari is basically Machiavelli incarnated. Of course his hair should be black. Dance's beard is the right style for it though.

it doesnt make a difference about his hair colour but i wonder why they didnt just dye it?

They should have died Charles Dance's hair black so he resembled lord Vetinari more.

@ArthurSavillesCrime Charles is well known for his downright refusal ever to let people mess with his hair colour. ^_^

@Phantombucketmouse Then Jeremy Irons should have been given the part again. Could Mr Dance not have worn a wig?
ArthurSavillesCrime 1 year ago
@ArthurSavillesCrime Not arguing with that. Jeremy Irons is the quintessential Vetinari for me.
