The great useless French ditch... They built it as an excuse not to properly prepare themselves for another war. Had the French spend half the money they spent on the wall on modern battle tanks they might have had a chance...
The maginot line was not completed because the French though it wouldr be disrespectful to build the fortification between their boarder and Belgium (seeing as they were allies). They tried to complete the fortification during the phoney war period winter 1939-1940 but could finish it it in time.
@jhauck35 Well, the real spear point of the German attack in 1940 was in the Ardennes, and although that area stretches in to Belgium, to majority of the attack was actually over a French-German border. So you can't use the Belgian-French alliance to back up the French here.. It's true that Germany attacked Holland and Belgium, but that was a diversion. France and England sent their men there, kept some at the Maginot Line, and left the Ardennes basically undefended.
Why is this song eternally stuck in my head? I saw footage of this guy performing this song for troops in the field in France 1940 on the history channel, either pre May or during the phoney War. Why am i forever humming this? I've done 4 combat tours since Desert Storm.... but why is it this song that haunts me? Anyone believe in Reincarnation? Maybe i was there, in another life back in 1949? I'm 41 now.... anyone else have this song haunt them? in a good way?
In world at war they said they had started constructing the line to the coast. I forgot why they had stopped, funding I think. The maginot line is a great metaphor for the mistakes societies are doomed to repeat time and time again.
and "BOUM" by charles trenet is a great song, especially the montage they do with the cannons firing. lol good call.
@krillzone I've watched that series 4-5 times, I have it on DVD. The further construction of the Maginot Line was halted because France was allied with Belgium and Holland, so by constructing the Line all the way to the sea it may seem to the Belgians that France thought "Well, as long as we are safe, screw the Belgians!" So it was political too, not just funding. But yes, funding was also a part of it..
great song! but the french maginot line was a joke the germans went around it n penetrated it within a wk it costed france billions n served 0 purpose lol
@PYOTERTHEGREAT I saw this on World At War and it stuck with me too. I punched it in and damned if this didn't pop up. You might want to check posts for Over There and This is the Army Mr. Jones. This is why Youtube is the best invention since pizza and beer.

@TheEmcee1 It wasn't a joke.
It was a decent attempt but a single flaw rendered the entire thing useless.

Heard this song while watching "World At War". Thought it was kind of neat. Thanks for loading this unusual but entertaining song.
