Back when I was a kid (late 80s) it was the Belz Factory Outlet Mall. And it was run down and depressing back then too. It was down the road from our house and an outlet, so mom would bring us there all the time. I hated it - I always wanted to go to the Mall of Memphis instead.
The "main place" shopping mall in Buffalo, NY is a real dead mall... worse than the one in this video. The only good store in there is Footlocker. The mall has been struggling for almost 20 years.
However, I don't suppose the opening of the Walden Galeria in the late-80s nearby helped... that is one of the best malls in the country!
It was just poor planning which have caused malls to "Jump The Shark". People HATED the city in the '60s, '70s, and even '80s; so having lots of shopping was a great refuge for them. Then many cities gentrified in the '90s and '00s causing mall attendance to drop (though some cities have good urban malls, even NYC).
I hate seeing malls close down. They were built in the '60's and '70's and everyone under one roof. Its nice to shop and be cool or warm instead instead of going from store to store. Now the outdoor shopping centers are making a comeback, thanks to greedy Wal-Mart.
a good example is in Johnstown Pa tthe Richland mall was built in the 1970's but then they built the Galleria Mall in the early 90's the richland mall closed and was demolished. in recent years they built a new wal mart and an entire out door shopping center on the land that was richland mall. i dont get outdoor shopping centers especailly in this are where winters can be pretty bad
Nice video, Harmony. Where is this mall located? I have been following dead malls a lot of my life, having seen some die before my eyes. Pretty cool to see an original Pacman arcade game in there though!
I like those old games and I wish monroville mall had the game place the one when they did dawn of the dead but now its too high tech. I dont like updates
Americans don't have children anymore. When the average family only has 1.2 kids, yeah, there will be less people and things will look empty. And who will fill the vacuum?
Wow... i don't know what's worse, the fact of how dead that mall is, the fact that i KNOW where it is, or yet worse, I remember when it opened and the business SUCKED then too! Lakeland is about 20 miles from downtown Memphis, TN.
theres a mall here in my hometown at evening the mall is almost empty only those who works there and probably few customers.. theres only 2 stores open then..
When i'm there at the evening i always say the same thing " It's like everyone turned into Zombies" well i say that in swedish ;)
That's far from a dead mall, struggling and dates, yes, but it still has a lot of stores in it, even more stores than the Station Mall in downtown Altoona. Station Mall only has 5 or 6 stores, and has a dark and run down feel to it.
This mall is far from dead, you wanna see a real dead mall, search youtube for "Dixie Square Mall" in Harvey IL, AKA the Blues Brothers chase scene... nuff said.
This isn't the mall where Dawn Of The Dead was shot. I live by the Monroevile Mall and that is the real mall that the original Dawn Of The Dead was shot in. I will get a camera and shoot some fotage of it when I go there and post it here.
I've gotta agree with Jshaw71 about the games. I'd be in that arcade everyday if lived there. Well maybe not every single day, but more than I should.
I used to work at this mall in Fort Pierce, FL called "The Orange Blossom Mall". There was only 1 store open in the entire mall which was this bicycle shop...and there was 1 restaurant open in the food court. It always reminded me of Dawn of the Dead. The only time I had seen anyone in the mall was when I was walking over to the food court one time and there was this elderly woman walking really slow like a zombie...kind of freaked me out.
I have that shirt, too, but that doesn't matter. You and your friends could probably hijack such a desolate mall for short zombie scenes. I doubt that the proprietors would care or even notice. Anyway, that's a neat video, with The Gonk and all...
Those games range from late 70's to early 90's. That is one dead mall! One I will have to visit one day!

Excellent: I'm a big DOTD fan, and I've seen two malls within a couple of miles of my house get built, open, wither away, decay and die.

Dead malls, in a way, are kind of cool. You can go in take pictures and record it so it will be history.
I did the same thing with a dead mall in my hometown, now demolished. It was Columbus Square Mall.
