  • Id never ride my horse on ice unless i wanted to die lol but these Icelandic horses are made for it.. suprised he slipped

  • und so zu info dat is nen pferd. und ken pony

  • Unfälle passieren immer. In jedem Sport. ICh kann auch sagen oh mein gott wenn beim springen ei unfall passiert. tölt on ice iszt ein sport für islandpferde. verstanden?

und da sieht man auch was islandpferde für ein tollen charakter haben.

  • oh god:(

  • wow are they on pure ice , those ponies are so skilled I'd like to see one of my horses attempt that XD

  • Aw I love this event, the ponies look so cute.

  • stupidest sport ever. who in their right mind woudl ride a horse on ice? even if they had special soes and were icelandic horses. i was jsut walking on snow, and went over hidden ice, and my horse fall, and slid like 3-4 metres away, lucky i was bareback and leapt off a rolled.

  • @RonnyMyBoy1 Why is it mean? A horse is not made of porselen. I've seen horses fall ON THEIR OWN far worse than this and still just get up and keep running. This is far less dangerous than most other sports, just think of how many horses dies in cross country jumping for instance.

And your horse must have some crappy shoes. Mine has studded shoes, just like these ones, and she doesn't slip at all.

  • @Synna89 actualy, my horse goes barefoot. thank you very much.

  • @RonnyMyBoy1 And you're honistly comparing what happened to your barefoot horse, to these horses which have studded shoes?! What were you even doing on the ice is my question..

  • @Synna89 i wasn't on the ice, my horse spooked, which in turn made her go onto a tiny patch of ice. still, it's not natural for horses to purposly run on ice, studed shoes or not, i dont like shoes unless they are absolutley nessisary for the horse. wild horses do fine without them.

  • @RonnyMyBoy1 If you're so into natural, why do you ride? It's not natural for a horse to carry people around on their backs, it's not natural for them to have saddle and bridle. YOU yourself put your horse into an unnatural situation, but yet you feel the need to complain about other people doing the same. That's called being a hypocrite.

Also, Iceland is FULL of ice, so for an icelandic horse, it IS natural to run on ice..

  • @Synna89 it's not natural when the horse hasn't been raised in iceland, how are they supposted to know they are good at running on ice? and iceland is more grass then anything, look at pictures. ust cuz it has ice in it's name doesn't mean it has lots of ice. Greenland has green in it's name and greenland is full of ice. your just wasteing your time replying to me, but i REALLY don't care what you say/think. it's my opinion so stop trying to change it. kthanksbye.

  • to all the detractors and nay-sayers of this riding of Icelandics on ice (which, um, let's see, Iceland, maybe there's Ice there? *sigh*) - mind telling me what usually happens when a horse throws a shoe? they stumble, right? and what happens to ANY walking creature that stumbles on ice? They fall.

It is an accident, and involved the throwing of the shoe. Nothing more complex than that.

(I was directed here from a blog involving abuse in Icelandic riding - I'm still a bit worked up from it)

  • @Braddelchen really? horses are trained to tolt just like theyre trained to jump/ and horses DO jump naturally. do they jump over EVERYTHING? no. they just do it when they have to. Do you jump over every obstacle? no. you dont. but can you? why hells yeah you can. lol.

its a natural thing, yes, but for the horse to learn different ways of getting around a course, yeah. that takes training.

  • I have watched my horses slip in the mud, on their own. These horses are trained on ice and know how to handle themselves, but accidents happen. horses can just as easily trip on perfectly good footing.

  • Aww :(

  • those people in the crowd/aduince are mean to laugh at the accident screw them!

  • Was ist daaas ? Haben die keine Hobbys xD

  • Props to both rider AND horse. Both handled it very well.

Though, I admit _I_ even laughed... once I realized neither was hurt. The horse had the cat-like "I meant to do that!" going for him.

  • Wow, I'm seriously impressed by the rider! They were really calm and collected the entire time, props to the rider for sure.

  • wth? before I clicked to see this vid the following said smth like "fucking horse falls because of too big rider"? the rider is NOT too big/tall for this horse!

  • i didnr know they had ice tracks...thats very very interesting. the horse handled himself very very well , he just sild back up!

  • Horses and ice not a good idea

  • Actually that was an icelandic horse and they practically live on ice.

He/She was tolting, it a verrryyyyyy smooth trot like gait.

They are used to ice that is why the horse just got back up.

I know this cos I ride one[:

  • Stupid audience laughed!! >=(

  • some people don't seems to know that actually here in north there is ICE on the roads in winters and well horses just have to walk and run on ice. we cant shut our horses to the stables until it's spring again and ice/ snow free land. bad timing for shoe to get off.. :/

  • That's as may be, but one should travel CAREFULLY on ice, as a person who lives among ice and snow should know. Racing on ice is a bad idea to end all bad ideas, and it's done for entertainment rather than necessity. I very much doubt that working horses and their drivers are risked in this way. Your justification falls short.

  • Who said they weren't careful? That wasn't done on purpose, was it?

The horses are often used to do this. It doesn't matter if it's for entertainment or not.

  • i think ice racing is stupid and dangerous

  • i never knew that they had actual "ice" races for icelantics. it looks dangerous though

  • Horseback riding is dangerous anyway, you can never make it safe.

  • ok i get it now some horses are made for this i have never here of these kind of horses sorry

  • why is this in berlin??? its an icelandic horse, it should be in iceland =)

  • ..... man, people aren't really getting the FACT that ICELANDIC HORSES are used to tölting on ice >_> *sigh* some people are just being ignorant~~

  • Oops, I meant using a flash noseband instead of a tiedown. I mean, geez, we don't want to use a tiedown and allow these horses any flexion or natural stretch to their neck!

And for the record, I own sound, natural TWHs &have for over 10 years, & I have studied and ridden just about every other gaited breed out there, including Icies. Most people override gaited horses, ride them too soon, & never teach them proper collection, softness and suppleness. It's terrible how these horses suffer....

  • Riding them on ice isn't mean. Riding them with their necks upside down and sitting on their kidneys with the bit cranked so hard in their mouths that the horses are gaping and straining AND using a tiedown so they cannot escape the pain IS mean. Poor gaited horses--they put up with so many bad, bad, BAD riders!

  • What about when Eight Belles broke both her front legs in the kentucky Derby this year and had to be eauthanized?? now thats mean to race any 2 year old as they are not fully developed yet. Ice is part of the Icelandic Horses culture. And horses do not jump naturaly jump after jump after jump, plus add the weight of a rider.

  • Poor horses.

  • That is very natural for icelandic horse.

There really is ice in iceland and the horses do walk on ice.

So don't come here saying "poor horses" when you don't know anything about these things.

  • you can just say that if your know what your doing. You definitly dont now that. Sorry for my english, im norwegian

  • "Iceland where is so much ice and snow, the need a gait what is very steady and not as slow as walk to move on. Therefore, they walk in tölt, cause there is always a foot on the ground so they have a lot of grip"

A video from Iceland says that the tolt is very hard on the horse and should only be done on good terrain.

A horse's foot slides into place. Nails in the shoes stop the foot from sliding, interfere with the natural biomechanics of the leg, and put torque on the hocks.

  • How could you say this is mean? It is no more mean than forcing a horse over a 4ft jump, or around a barrel, or to run out a mile. Accidents happen in EVERY sport. You don't say it's mean when a horse falls after attempting a jump do you? No - you don't. Get over yourselves and realize these horses are well trained. Stop acting like horses never slip on ice on their own. If I had a camera everytime my fools fell running around in the winter I could post my own video!

  • well actually it is. horses jump naturally but they don't go careering round and ice rink naturally do they?!!!

  • Horses jump naturally just as horses in snowy climates run on ice naturally.

  • ohh crap sorry senty a leture to some one lol but urv alreadysead opps

  • sorry jumping is the least natural thing for a horse ok its on a few hunfred years tht horses have ben doing jumping mby little more but ives hve been doing this since whener they came ivceand its in their nature n jumping

  • If a horse had the choice beetween jumping over something or go around it. It will choose the way around it. Because jumping isn't a natural thing for a horse. Sure, there are horses who really like jumping but there are also horses who really like to tölt on ice.

The horses you jump with are well trained for this sport so accidents will not happen often. This is like it is in the ice tölt. The horses are trained for this competiton and i don't think they have a problem with this.

  • @Pridefulpain ye but the horse isnt frced over the jump the horse is a animal like every other one on the earth and if it didnt wan to jump it would refuse it or run out .its not that its mean it just looks sore for the horse :) . x hope you get wat i mean

  • @Pridefulpain What is mean about this sport is very often the riders are too tall, they sit too far back in the saddle, the horses necks sit at a painful level because they use so much pressure on the horses mouth the horse can barely stand it. That's what I understand happens every day to ponies like these that's what I see is mean.

  • @Hushpuppygirl The riders aren't too tall, the horses are way strong enough to carry them. The saddles are never placed further back than the ribcage, and not everyone use too much pressure on their mouths.

  • @Hushpuppygirl nothign is harmign these ponys there are FINE!

  • tølt on ice is NOT mean! they have sharp spikes on their shoes. This was just casuel and a accident! looks scary!!

  • This is a very unusual freak accident....

  • This is NOT mean!

  • 2.

So if you look how much horses fall each year in spring or race compatition, that is much much more, so i guess our sport is not really dangerous or un-horsefriendly. Happily Leiri and Andreas where not hurt and a few weeks after this fall, they could already start training again.

  • You guys all say it is mean. Well let me explain you something. These horses come from Iceland where is so much ice and snow, the need a gait what is very steady and not as slow as walk to move on. Therefore, they walk in tölt, cause there is always a foot on the ground so they have a lot of grip. Ofcourse an exident can always happen, but luckily we far dont have that much exidents in our sport as in other sports with horses. I guess no more than 5 fall in sport in the whole year in whole world

  • obviously, youve never seen the icetolts on the lakes in iceland in winter. Ofcourse it is green in summer on the most places and even kinda good wetter, but in winter there is a lot of ice to ride or walk on for horses

  • au man... da war ich schon net mehr da aber schaut aufn ersten blick übel aus !

  • thats mean!

  • was pony okay?

  • obviously, horse and rider were ok. At least, they didn't tell us anything different.

  • yeah but after like there could be injury.

  • @smarterweb so they actually run the horses on the ice? is this the reason behind the special gaits? the um...Tölt i believe is what its called ?? also i'm sure they do but they use a special type of shoe for this? sorr if i'm asking a lot of questions its just this is an equine event i'm not familar with so it intrests me^_^ (to ponniryttare) the horse looked fine. he was standing there nice and calm so i'm sure he was okay.

  • @LittleMustangMare No, the reason behind their gaits is breeding, not ice ;).. The icelandic people needed a fast, comfortable gait to travel across the country in, so they bred tölt into the horses.

But they run like that on any ground, not just ice :)..

The horses have studded shoes, which makes them not slide. This one had just lost a shoe, which is why he fell.

  • @Synna89 oh cool so like if i had studded/spiked shoes but on say a mustang with sure footing he could manage it maybe? <.< this sport interests me but i am too tall for an Icelandic XD

  • @LittleMustangMare Maybe. But remember that in tölt there's always one foot in the ground. Whereas in trot (like you would have to ride in on a mustang) there is a "flyingmoment" which makes it more risky. But if you took it slowly, and had 4 studs on each foot, I am sure he could do it :)..

And you're not too tall for an icelandic, grown men of all heights ride them ;)..

  • @Synna89 oh cool.

  • there really on ice I didn't know that had competitions like that!?
