I am not sure whether this was the last performance but I think the one he performed at Aizawl, India was his last performace, because he went to aizawl after he performed at calcutta
Anyway ... this is my last defense, hehe, no hard feelings man.
I actually know your real name and appreciate so much all the work you've put into sharing Lane music on the net, I myself probably got about 30 boots from your links. Thank you so much for spreading the word and peace brother.
Yeah, i've actually edited and uploaded a lot more, and also spent years creating a huge database of track lists for all Shawn's shows (around 170), plus track lists for all the alternate versions of his shows that exist (some of his shows have up to 4 different versions). I posted the shows and database at a new Shawn site, check out the link on my YouTube main page.
I've been posting Shawn's shows for years, i know many of them have been re-posted at various blogs, even with tracks renamed.
And my mistake was that I liked this improv so much that I made an MP3 from this clip and when adding it to my archives I noticed that Tripura sounds familiar and I KNOW I have that bootleg. I went and checked and tracked your 'chordal improvisation' to Savitri Alap. And that's all. :)
And in the tracklist, the guy originally splitting the songs seperated this part and titled it Savitri Alap. Which is correct, Lane's solo is interlude into Savitri. Often however you wouldn't split an interlude from the main song, this just happened to be the approach of this guy.
I was just trying to be helpful and give information about the clip. And it all was driven by the mistake I did and wanted to help others avoid the same mistake.
When I mentioned the Paris video as a 'proof' I didn't mean that Jonas flashed Savitri on screen. But there is an ALAP flashed I think when Shawn plays his jaw dropping solo.
So my whole point is actually that it's usually nice and informative to label a song/clip by refferencing it to the original source it came from.
And the "Chordal Improvisation" although is truly an improvisation, is taken from the gig at "Tripura House", and there's a bootleg that exists with (probably) the whole gig.
That's not the actual name of this piece, that's just a name someone may have given to it on a bootleg somewhere along the line ("Alap" is a description, rather than an actual name). I have probably 150 or so recordings of Shawn, and never heard him play this exact piece, he just Improvised it on the spot at this gig.
Shawn played many, many Guitar Improvs over the years, often leading into various different songs.... but that doesn't mean they were exclusively part of the song itself.
Yeah I wasn't suggesting it's the name of the song, but it's still most correct title of the track on that boot. :)
Alap is a very specific term in indian music however. Hellborg/Lane know this, and they use Alap themselves in track titles, for example in the Paris video.
So Savitri Alap in translation would mean Savitri intro guitar improvisation.
My point was, that this is literally just a guitar Improvisation, Shawn 'Improvised' it there and then, it just 'happened' to be before Savitri on this perticular gig.
I actually really dissagree with the fact that Jonas flashed "Savitri" on screen during the "Paris" gig right when Shawn started his first Guitar Improv during that gig.... yet again, it wasn't actually a part of Savitri, it just happened to be before it. That always bothered me, because Jonas is listed as having writing credit for "Savitri", yet Shawn's Improvs (that just happen to precede) are clearly thought up by 'Shawn' in the moment, in fact most of them could only be played by Shawn.
I don't mean to kick up any kind of fuss about it, i just like to give credit where it's due.... and Jonas has official writing credit for "Rice with the Angels" and "Savitri", yet Shawn's Improvs that often preceded them were obviously his own..... which is why i always list them seperate to the songs they just happened to precede. :-)
I wasn't suggesting Shawn's improvisations are part of Savitri.
In Indian music (the same one Hellborg & Lane went nuts about) you will often find compositions or ragas that when performed very very often start of with an improvisational interlude. And that's what ALAP is.
Yes, an improvisation made up right there at the moment, but based around the main theme or melody of the composition.
I love shawns music but ...I think this is even better than his technical stuff

Tasty vid. I love the "rainbow bridge" photo/collage especially. It so matches the music perfectly.

What effect is he using? Sounds like one of those synth pedals.

The name of the song is "Savitri [Guitar Alap]", or in other words the guitar intro leading into the Savitri song.
The gig in Tripura House in Calcutta was some kind of private show according my records.
