  • I guess i was one the first who bought Sketches in Spain decades ago. Incredibly good, both orchestra and the trumpet soloist are fantastic - I'm sure Evans would agree.

  • Why should he sound like Miles Davis? He ain't Miles Davis and no need to compare him to Miles.

    Though I didn't care for some of the high notes, he did a great job & so did the rest of the musicians. He gave it Spanish flair & his interpretation of Miles & Evans treatment is really nice. Bravo!!

  • @Max1baL . el sabor del flamenco es otro ,tecnicamente esta bien, pero los flamenco son todo sentimiento y el es muy tecnico pero a veces parece estudio de trompeta,eso no es solea, esa es la diferencia con Miles . un genio en cada tema de Sketches of Spain !!Digo yo !!

  • Es una recreación de la SOLEÁ grabada por MILES DAVIS en 1960 en el disco SKETCHES OF SPAIN , con arreglos de GIL EVANS. La SOLEÁ es un estilo emblemático de los gitanos (y no gitanos) españoles que interpretan flamenco (para algunos el más importantedel flamenco ). Tiene una estructura rítmica cíclica de 12 tiempos que se suelen seguir así : 1,2-1,2,3 - 4,5,6 - 7,8,9,10, siendo el 3 y el 10 los más importantes (donde el cantaor canta con más intensidad o la bailaora levanta los brazos, etc).

  • Excellente! I am a fan of Miles Davis' music, and have been for the past 55 yrs, however, I have to give credit where it is due. This man has talent, and the overall performance is very well done! (Also knew Miles personally, and heard his music played in my living room--and even Miles would appreciate this rendition.)

  • miles would hate a copycat - he would like this guy for giving it his own voice, but still tipping his hat to miles. that's a tough card to play.

  • Just to clarify, the trumpet player is Orbert Davis, not Jeremy Pelt. The group is the Chicago Jazz Ensemble. This was recorded in 1996. If you're looking for Miles' version, its called Solea. What a first rate performance!!!

    BTW, i wouldn't say this guys a bad player, he definately catches the mood and the tone to make it good... not sounding like Miles though, mind you.

  • @jtsby2k1 His name is Orbert Davis, he's a very successful and inspiring Chicago musician and educator. This was a huge undertaking and he was one of the main people (if not the main person) that pulled the performance together over years.

  • Mr  Davis is obviously a musician who has studied Miles extensively. He REALLY sounds like him at times. Great player...cool to hear this piece played live, too.

  • The trumpet soloist in this video is my good Professor, the world famous Orbert Davis. He's a jazz instructor at UIC, the conductor of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, and he's got quite a few CD's out as well.
