@calicoboy It's a Lancehead so it's of the Fer-De-Lance family. Depends what you define as fer-de-lance as some people use that term only for a specific species in the Bothrops genus.

I have been to Brasil 6 times and am going again in March. Besides Rio, I will be going to Ilha Grande for the 1st time. Are there many dangerous snakes on the trails? I am an experienced hiker, but should I go with a guide?
I went 03 times for ilha grande, there you can find some venomous snakes like Bothrops jararacussu, Bothrops jararaca and others. Just be attention like in any other forest.
If you are going alone I suggest the you contact a guide. Send me a message, I'll try to get a telephone number of somebody that can help you with information.

No my friend this is not a Fer-de-lance this is a Bothrops jararacussu and a accident with a lot of venomous it's very serious, the venom of this snake destroy protein and the final result can be your dead.
Bothrops jararacussu IS related to the Fer-de-lance. Bothrops are the Lancehead snakes of Central and South America. Fer-de-lance is sort of a generic name that refers to several snakes in the Bothrops genus. Jararacussu is in the Bothrops genus, but is not one of the snakes with a common name of Fer-de-lance. Tey are closely related, though.

thats pretty awesum! it looks alot liek a gaboon viper from africa, similar shape and pattern and coloring. but after looking it up, it is much less dangerous than a gaboon viper. but still awesum, i hope to get a snake like that 1 day, sumthing not too lethal, so i dont have to worry too much about it biting me
