  • One of the amazing things I love about this video (which I watch repeatedly), apart from Chet's beautifully amazing solo of course, is the way he brings the band together so tightly after about half way through the head- it's really just incredible the command he has over the music, the phrasing, the feel and how he is able to get everyone together so quickly. what a master - thanks for all of these great Chet vids on youtube. (this european period has some of Chet's most wonderful playing)

  • Pushed is only a bad rumour as he could not find steady work and his chops where that of lessor players, the hardship of playing with the false teeth, the addiction, no real money no love all the wasted time. but, he could still sing a blue song from his soul like no other one on earth, his own unique style a waste he had more good music in him, his death is a mystery

  • wow, he sounds awesome here.

  • Hi Felicidades, Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure that Chet Baker intentionally "chose" to continue a life that included getting his teeth knocked out over a bad drug deal in San Francisco, caused his family and children considerable pain for many years, and ultimately died as a possible result of being pushed out a window in Amsterdam. Are you sure he chose that? I agree with you that it's hard for non-addicts to understand an addiction lifestyle and how hard it is to overcome it.

  • Addictions are not fully understood. It is questionable that an addict "chooses" to

remain an addict-some have the inner resources to recover and take life one day at a time, with relapses viewed by professionals as another stage in the recovery process. Dr. Karl Menninger once observed "it is hard for a free fish to understand what is happening to a hooked one." it doesn't appear productive or particularly insightful to say that addicts choose. Bill Honer

  • @CRBilly100 you are very pretentious! kind of intellectual cliche!

you don't anderstand a different kind of life! you are living in your on macro cosmos!

you are not a free fish! moral is your prison!!!

  • Daniel, maybe because you only have come to know Chet recently, you aren't aware that up until the end, he was brilliant. Have you heard/seen the Live inTokyo recording done in '87, or the Last Great Concert done 2 weeks before his death, both magnificent performances!!!

  • i'm depressed because i hear him changing the course of his phrases because he can no longer hit the high notes....totally disrupting the melodic intent of the phrase...one of my heroes going by the wayside...very sad...a melodic genius that i only discovered recently...jazzers, stay clean for god's sake!

  • @danielhuntsinger - it´s not about "hit the high notes".... it´s his feeling....... wheather or not he hit "that or this" note doesnt matter....they were all just so right...... my friend, don´t be technical.....feeel it.......

  • he chose drugs over destiny. Simple. He couldn't handle cash.

  • If Keith Richards played trumpet....nobody like him, though. What phrasing!

  • he shouldda been a movie star with a blonde on each arm-a red sports car and pockets full of cash-no- he just got to be the best.....enough I think for him...

  • So laid back and different from the over blowing 'in front of the beat brigade' we usually hear

  • What brilliant phrasing. So heartfelt.

  • sound check.

  • just knocks me out. thank so much

  • amazing that this drug-ravaged man can play at all.He looks like he has one foot in the grave.......such a shame.

  • @minor7b5b9

he looks fine, leave him alone.

  • He was pretty close. This was what 3 years before he died?

  • @MichaelnChristine Yeah, but he died as a result of an accident. For all we know, he could have gone on to live to 90. He's mainly skinny and haggard. Just an observation: but many guys like Chet who are thin and muscular tend to live quite long, despite their addictions. It's always the well-fed, soft and doughy guys who take dirt dives in the 60s.

  • @ritter89 - Right on man.

  • qué hecho mierda que estaba... :(

Con la onda que tenía de joven...

  • Chet sounds really great here and so does this alto player! They are similar players....lyrical and really putting that linear thing together so nice too. Is Steve Houben Belgian ? Dutch? I want to hear more of him. Anybody know where I can ?

  • Steven Houben is a great Belgian musician who's still performing.

  • Does Steven Houben perform mostly in Europe ? Does he have records/CDs? He is my kind of alto player. He really plays great. I play alto and piano and I worked with Chet on some dates in the middle 80s on the west coast. Is S.Houben well known in Europe ? He should be. He plays his ass off.
