I saw the 4449 at Owosso, MI yesterday. What an incredible machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You won't see many things in life more awesome than the 4449 (unless maybe the Pere Marquette 1225 that was also there in Owosso)
Interesting note from the SP4449 Twitter about trip going east: "People complain of train horns. City installs "no horn zones". Steam engine runs thru (town), people mad they can't hear steam whistle. Go figure!"
From Train Festival 2009 Website it says throughout: July 23-26th - "Coming July 23-26, 2009, the sounds of steam whistles, the clickety-clack of steel wheels on rails, the smell of coal smoke and excitement of children of all ages will take over the Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso, Michigan."
Oh my word, what a wonderful looking machine! I can only imagine what she would have looked like with a full compliment of Southern Pacific Daylighter cars behind her. And that whistle! So throaty, it sends shivers up your spine! A truly loveley marvel of yesteryears technology!
Some people made comments about the diesel engine with the SP4449. This stream engine is very expensive to upkeep. Not too many people alive even know how to repair such an engine anymore and parts have to be basically made by hand. So be glad it has a diesel to help it as it goes through areas like the Deschutes Canyon. Helps keep the engine going for years to come.
that would be cool, especially if you put 3830 in that combo also. bring them to Aus. and let themm run a triple header of the Newcastle Flyer or take on the Blue Mountains, whichever. Just be sure to steam down to S.A. so i get a glimpse also. :p
Very cool to see these things run- too bad they always seem to need a modern diesel helper. Kind of takes away from the respect they deserve. Back in the day they could pull that tonnage easily.
SP4449 was the first vehicle to bring me to California when I was three years old in 1945. I saw her again in 1991 in the roundhouse in Portland Oregon, where she was still being maintained. I hope that's still true. What a beautiful machine!
What a nice long train with so diff. coaches - int. for European viewers like me. Thanks!

I was wondering
how many train cars did the 4449 pull back in the 1940s?
BIGT6851 2 years ago 2
@BIGT6851 Anywhere from ten to twenty. The Daylights were very popular trains in the forties, and made Southern Pacific a lot of money.

You were right the first time... The 1225 is a beautiful engine. The 4449 is, well, a rare collision of art and industrial design...

I got shots of the Daylight in Owosso as well. I traveled all the way from Carson City, Nevaa to Owosso & it was quite an amazing site to see.

Good video. Enjoyed the run-by. Good to see the father pulling his son by the collar to keep him from running to close to tracks.
