How to make a tartan pattern on fondant

I really enjoyed the tutorial along with several others you have done. Is there an alternative to the confectioners glaze, I live in Toronto and I have been unable to find. Thanks again.

Love your techniques and your work. 2 questions are: what did you use in the white paint? and what was in the finishing touch to add a shine to your piece?

Although I said "paint" it is actually edible white powder colour which I "paint" on using clear alcohol (gin or vodka) to mix into a painting consistency. The shine is obtained with confectioner's glaze.

I know, the lighting was absolute rubbish as I used my digital camera but now I have a little web cam I may do this one again at a later date. Cheers! :o)

Do you paint the white on and then attach the tartan to your character?

Or do you attach the tartan to the figurine and then paint the white line afterwards?

Hi Tash! I paint the white line last of all. I cut my paste and glue into position, tweaking where necessary then once the kilts (which it normally is!) are how I want them then I paint the line. I'd leave this til completely dry before I do anything else with the figure. :o)
