Oh god. Nick Cave is one of my favourite male singers. And The Decemberists are one of my favourite bands. I've never heard Marianne Faithful before, but gosh. This cover is so great. Insta-fan. What a glorious combination.
I just have one thing to say to the little smartasses dissing Marianne Faithful - stop it, because you who do this are not fit to light her cigarettes
@sifu50 Except that thank God she is free from that horrible addiction!! And the cancer that may have caused it is gone too, thankfully. Of course I do completely get your point.
People, It is a cover! They can fuck the lyrics up if they want to, they can even write a different song to the same melody, that's what covers are for. But calling Marianne Faithfull a poor singer is just ignorant...

This is terrible. It's an absolute affront to The Decemberists and everything they've worked for. This is the worst cover of their music I have ever heard.
Well, I agree that it still sounds good (though I do think it'd be better if it was more accurate - the word "skin" just gets repeated too much in this case), but there most definitely can be "right" and "wrong" lyrics when they're clearly one and not the other. You're correct when it comes to a lot of lyrics, though - so many are slurred and made for sound and not meaning and therefore are more subjective.
Well in most covers the lyrics remain untouched, but if they don't, it doesn't mean they're wrong, as soon as the artist who covers has changed them as he/she wants and is aware of these changes , it's kinda dogmatic to say that, that's what I mean.
I don't understand why the lyrics you're talking about are more subjective than the others. I would say they 're as objective as usual.
Anyway, I think this change of lyrics here isn't so successful too, but can't say it's wrong :D
@RedLeftFist How can you say 'you can't say right or wrong' with the lyrics? The lyrics are, officially, 'a grey sky, a bitter sting.' It's not up for interpretation or confusing at all. Read The Crane Wife booklet with the vinyl - it reads exactly that myself and grendel up there are right. Marianne Faithfull, in addition to being a poor singer and ruining this cover, messed up the lyrics.
lol xD.. You can have your opinion, anyway I like both versions of the song the same and I won't stop listening to one of them 'cause the lyrics are changed or 'cause of her voice. But if you're Decemberists fan/fans, then I see..
@shirosenshiesq her voice is incredible. she's been making music long enough to get away with whatever she wants, and she did a fantastic job with this song! many artists change lyrics in covers for many reasons. it's called Artistic License.
@musicforchewfaygs You clearly have no idea what 'artistic license' actually is, then. And just because an artist has been doing something for a long time, doesn't mean they have a right to change what they're covering to something worse.
@shirosenshiesq 'worse' is an opinion, i think her version is much better than the original. and artistic license is, by definition, an artists rights to do what they wish with other peoples material for the purpose of creating "new" art. which is exactly what she did.
@musicforchewfaygs Then if you think this is better than the original vision of The Crane Wife 3, I feel incredibly sad for you. Opinion is one thing, tone deafness, a disregard for quality and some - albeit likely moinor - retardation is a whole different kettle of crappy music.
@shirosenshiesq Do you know what they say about opinions? No? Lemme help... They're like assholes, everybody has one and everybody thinks everybody else's stinks. That's you, in the end of the last phrase. So in the future please keep such idiotic comments to yourself. Thanks.
@shirosenshiesq How on earth can art not be up for individual interpretation?? Art by definition is subjective. For one singer/listener the lyrics mean one thing and for another person they mean something else. As a writer of poetry, prose and lyrics I know this. If someone thinks that when I I write perhaps 'a grey sky' and I mean a literal sky that is grey in colour and someone else sings it and think that it is refering to something else entirely like a bowl of cereal than it is okay ;.
@DancesWithJoy This isn't 'interpretation' or 'artistic subjectivity.' This isn't painting a bowl of fruit and deciding to make it cubist instead of still life. This isn't taking something and reinterpreting it in a new way, like the Starz network's miniseries. This isn't a band doing a cover of another song and adding their personal touch to it.
This a person singing another bands song, and singing the wrong lyrics, because they stuffed up and got them wrong or didn't like them.
@RedLeftFist this is hardly a matter of a couple of youtube fans appreciating marianne faithful's work. the most celebrated songwriters and artists of the last 40 years disagree with you, many of them joining her for recordings and shows over those 4 decades. you're entitled to your opinion but never forget it's an opinion. i think you'd find yourself alone in your position in a room with your own idols.
@bcimhe You may have noticed a provocation in my comments, but that's wrong. Anyway, having your own idols doesn't mean you'll be cut from world or that you won't make new idols and have new influences and opinions.
And I don't know if they criticise Faithful artistically, I haven't searched it. I don't like she's done many covers, but most of them are good
@DancesWithJoy Nick Cave RECORDED the song with her . If he thought that she was singing it "wrong" he would have corrected her and helped her sing it differently. Since he did not do so it proves that she is not wrong but rather re-interpretting.
so wonderfull... one of the best songs, the most intense songs i've ever heard, faithful's, "broken" voice is giving me the thrill, and Caves deep and gloomy moaning (i cant say singing) is ripping the heart out of me
@joeat963 How old are you? We grew up with that staff, since it started. And not only music, or something. It was a whole, complete movement in any level. If you are a grown up, I will happily, if I am asked, write my opinion about what was the premises, the sequence and consequence of it.
Amazing. Seems like Nick Cave can do nothing wrong :) Midas touch!
I also did a cover of the Decemberists original, fans should check it out:

I love this version, but why would Nick Cave know to correct Marianne on a song by the Decembrists? (barring the fact he has god-like awesome powers)

Isn't it "A gray sky, a bitter sting" not "skin"? Kinda wish they'd get the lyrics right, otherwise still pretty cool to hear.
