sounds like he need money in this time ...? or somebody tell him he kill his wife if he not recording come hitparadebullshit? or even in THIS time he was interested to have money on his account? is there a chance to find a nother duet, with david hasslehoff? or with elton john? with olivia newton john? did he do a duet with humperding pumpernickel somewhere? such a commercial shit....
sounds like he need money in this time ...? or somebody tell him he kill his wife if he not recording come hitparadebullshit? or even in THIS time he was interested to have money on his account?
sounds like Bowie and Lulu were singing to a pre-recorded instrumental backing track---the version that shows up on DDogs (xtra) is really close to it--the horns give it away
Doesn't sound much like Lulu and the music (along with Bowie's vocals) are the final version of the song. In other words, what ever female is singing, she is singing along with the pre-recorded track. I know of no producers that would do this unless it was a test track just to get the singer warmed up or perhaps tape was just rolling during rehearsals. It shouldn't have been released, ever, either way.
This was Bowie at the height of his powers, and it's nice to hear Lulu, another great 60's icon, sharing the spotlight. I wish they would have finished this up, it's classic stuff!
This was recorded at Chataeu D'Herouville in August/1973 prior to the 1980 Floor Show....David never did understand why she showed up there for 3-4 days for this crap rendition.
Lulu was shagging him rotten. They had a full on relationship. They recorded loads of stuff together, but she says his record company shelved it all and it was never released. Just reading her book, she tells it all, I was gobsmacked.
Not very powerful. Just sounds like someone singing along to Bowie, not really WITH in the sense of actually improving or adding a little something-something. I don't like it.
I love this - I have a poster of Lulu and Bowie on mt wall from that period. It's from, the now defunct, Disc music paper, and is 35 years old - I live in China now - and somehow it suits China, I don't know why.
Unreleased Duet But Bowie Went Onto Perform It On The 1980 Floor Show In October 73 I Think This May Have Been Recorded During The Sessions For Pinups In July/August 73 As Lulu Was There Recording Her Cover Of Man Who Sold The World
...The version that is here IS DB's original demo in its early stage with only the guide vocal and leaving Lulu to do her bit. Both the Ryko version with Lulu, which runs at 4:31 and the later version without Lulu, which runs at 2:54 ARE the same. The only difference is that the one that has had Lulu's vocal track mixed down is shorter AND runs at a slightly faster speed/higher pitch. DB's vocals on both match exactly and when played together at the same pitch and speed, they are identical.
I don't know about two different running times, but you are correct, her track is recorded over an existing one. Really kind of a pointless addition in my opinion. Love the song. I always wonder how much of it's writing is "1984" and how much is from his own imagination.
During the Pinups sessions in July-Aug 1973, David Bowie invited Lulu to Elton John's recording studio at Chateau d'Herouville, France to record her single 'The Man Who Sold The World'. The single's B-side 'Watch That Man' was also recorded. During the same sessions, Bowie was also laying down demos for his planned 1984 musical and Dodo was a song that Bowie demoed. As Lulu was there, she was invited to sing along....
Yeah, this is legit> It's been around for much longer than the video and Lulu was at the session, this version was just never released because of licensing issues.
I got it from the Absolutely Rare album, and apparently was recorded with Lulu in late 1973. Several websites talking about Absolutely Rare also say this. Type "Absolutely Rare Helden Lulu" into Google and the first result with be Helden and will take you to the page saying it was a 1973 recording? There's several other results saying 1973? Either way I didn't mean to mislead anyone
actually, it's not fake at all. the upload probably caused a significant reduction in sound quality. this is a genuine recording.
from the Illustrated DB Discography:
Dodo (Bowie): released as an extra track on the Rykodisc and 30th Anniversary 2CD Edition of Diamond Dogs. This actually is an edited version, as in the original version (which lasts 4'31" instead of 2'56") Lulu joins Bowie. The original has appeared on the Absolutely Rare (no label) CD.

Not a duo, as others have said. It's a guide vocal by Bowie (which is why he misses so many notes.)

This isn't even a demo. It's a recording of Lulu in the middle of learning the song from Bowie's guide vocal.
But the poster of this vid doesn't seem to want to acknowledge the fact.

Reminds me of 'Up the Hill Backwards" somewhat. I LIKE this!!

This is the same version as on Ryko's Diamond Dogs reissue, except that they mixed Lulu's vocal out & faded the track early before releasing it...
diskochimp 2 years ago
False advertising, SassySuzi. This is clearly NOT a duet... It's a backing track with a Bowie guide vocal for Lulu to learn the song...

not a good duo here at all, but thanks for this rare share

Definitely genuine - though they never recorded it together and was not a proper duet.
Bowie recorded this backing track for Lulu and added the "guide vocals". It was meant to be her next single after The Man Who Sold The World.
Lulu subsequently recorded it and then someone spliced the two together and it went out on the bootleg - it was not officially released.

FAKE!
1) That's the 'Rykodisk' demo. Funny thing is, lulu wasn't in on the original voice session in 73 (The backing you hear was done in the 90's).
2) I suspect that the additional voice (Recorded very flatly) is that of the person who posted it. Not impressed.
