Gee.... I'm sorry that Vincent only, as he says "touches on happiness once or twice a year"...One would hate to imagine how rarely he'd touch on it if he wasn't a major player on a hit TV show...Notice his reference to Europe, where, in his view, the people are so much "wiser" and more worldly?
I'd say Vinnie's quite young and less knowledgeable and sophisticated than he wants to appear, LOL.
Um why is everyone so worried about reactions. What about his answer. It was an answer that I guarentee nobody had on the tip of their tongue. Discuss the topic, not how people react to it. I think Vincent is very true. It sounds pessimistic to say their is no such thing as a permanent state of happiness but his reasoning was there. I think what he said explains a lot about his character.
@GenoSkill Vincent is an objective and imaginative thinker. Franco is great as well, but I'm just observing that artists often aspire to take on other forms, and Vincent's craft oriented persona and imperative based philosophical approach are like a remedy for the guilt pangs of Franco's professional need to take part in large scale commercial ventures. the pursuit of higher learning represents some search to redefine Franco's commercial output as high art by means of justification.
CONNOR! I <3 Vincent, even if I dont agree on everything he says. But, I do believe one is not happy all the time, if thats what he meant. He seems like the type to have an question for your question and makes you really think...cute to me. Still, I'll always view him as one of my tv crushes on 'Angel' so I could never hate him. ALL LOVE MY BABY! xD.
I think Vincent's reply is astonishingly accurate, especially the part about the essence of happiness in this materialistic world totally dominated by consumerism and ephemeral values, it's right happiness is for many ppl a goal that they strive at and work towards and unfortunately never realize because in most cases happiness is constantly being redefined on the go, thus it never IS it always MIGHT BE! like it or not that is the way most humans nowadays value their life, based on MIGHT not IS.
I do agree with you Vincent in how the people is, but I desagree about happinness. Happiness is what you make good in your life, when you do good things just for the good. I have passed by a lot of things and I can tell you I could be the saddest person in the world, but I'm happy. I'm a very happy person. I always put the other foot if anybody does anything to me, and happinness exist you just have to make it yourself. If you want to talk to me, my e-mail is anampamariacamila@gmail.com
@madsketcher I guess he's talking about the nature of happiness... it's kind of relative so wherever you are most people are thinking about what they want, what they can't have, or what the other guy has? I mean it's certainly true that "happiness" can't be measured as a science. It's very vague and very relative.
Google the "paradox of happiness," you'll see he makes sense:
The theory is if you do/buy things with the purpose of achieving happiness, you won't be happy.
But, if you do things WITHOUT the purpose of being happy (i.e., you do something because you enjoy it, but don't realize that's why you do it), you'll get happiness out of it.
Think of the happiest times in your life: you'll remember that "being happy" was so easy, you weren't even trying. Happiness isn't attained, it can only ensue.
i feel like at the beginning of the show, peter was an asshole, and i didn't like him, but i did find him adorable for his baby face. this new season, he's really gotten his act together and he's the only one who isn't messing things up. good for peter! great show. love the paley center. people get to actually talk.
She was probably thinking about everything he was saying and just moving through facial expressions normally as one could, sitting next to someone talking about something. At the first look she directs at em that could look like a disdain may have been just a surprised reaction to opening up with heroes being the real tragic ones. She may have not've been expecting it. and maybe as vincent expanded on it more, maybe she did end up getting the hotts for 'em. who knows? She seems fine to me, tho.

Christina Hendricks should start rubbing those huge juicy titties right on camera. Just rub those melons and maybe stupid Vincent will notice and shut the phuc up.
Take one out and lift a nipple to her lips and dabble her tongue on it. God I want to eat and poke her fire box with my hard kindling.

I think Christina Hendricks is vying for attention, and since the camera is focussed on Vincenta and she´s right next to him, she knows the camera will pick up on everything she does.
Vincent Kartheiser perfectly summarized life and how bad people get away with things.
"Heroes are really the tragic ones aren't they? Usually, especially in real life, the villains win. There's nothing tragic about Dick Cheney. What's tragic is everyone who has to deal with stuff that happens because of him."
I said that too when I watched it the first time, but after I saw this video again I think it's exactly the opposite. Watch how her face and her body respond to what he is saying. She even starts breathing heavier after he talks for a while, but looks elsewhere as if she's keeping her thoughts from manifesting in her facial expressions. I think she's excited by him.
I think Vincent would have been a better choice than the dude she's with now, but oh well

Christina isn't pissed at Vincent, she smiled at the Cheney joke and that's just the way she looks at him (from start to beginning).
Also, Vincent isn't a nihilist, he explains that having what everyone else deems to be happiness doesn't make one happy. By believing Americans are sadder than Europeans he believes happiness exists, but it cannot be objectified and therefore, in a way, doesn't exist.

The actor comes off as arrogant as the character he plays; Kartheiser could actually be an updated Pete Campbell. Perfect casting. Kudos to Matt Weiner.
He has a complicated answer for a reasonable question. That doesn't make him arrogant. Most actors try to find a way to sympathize with their characters. His answer is an attempt to rationalize Pete's behavior. Works for me.
@battlehappy I think it's arrogant to speak on behalf of others. Not that it's right or wrong, but I'd feel silly if I made such a sweeping statement about the human race just because *I* battle with depression. It's just a matter of perspective; it has nothing to do with the way things really are. Then again, I'm one of those "crazy" people that is often ecstatic. I think his viewpoints say a lot about what our society feeds us. It's not joy. Look for it within yourself.
@tcookie Or on second thought it could have something to do with this, cut from The Guardian: "Between shots, Kartheiser pinwheels around the set, teasing the crew and other actors or loudly psyching himself up for the next shot.
