The tempo out of time in Celi's Bruckner, whose simphonies are also out ot time, better in the eternity, let you hear any sound of any instrument, and you can see like in no other conductor the splendent laberynth that finally put you and leaves you at the heveans door... This is a good example of that Celi's light on the each one of the orchestral sounds.
This is my favorite movement =) I first heard it back in april, LA phil played it, my god, this symphony literally stole my heart, at school I'd find myself humming this movement, I love this movement =D <33. Great job~
I heard Celibidache and the Munich Orchestra twice in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Bruckner 8 & 4). They played No. 8 in the lowest tempi possible. I remember the audience (including myself) being paralized by the sheer beauty of the concert. One of the most wonderful experiences I ever had in a concert hall!
God, you are so lucky, my dream is to go to a concert presented by Celibidache or Kleiber, but they both passed away. now none of those conductors from golden era is still alive
Excellent interpretation and playing, although I heard a few ragged spots, which can be blamed mostly on his small conducting patterns. He needs more "dynamic range."
actually Sergio Celibidache was famous of his "wild" conducting style. you can try to find some of his early videos, then you'll find out how dynamic he was
Hmm, maybe he was different when younger. My conducting teacher in France, Narcis Bonet, told me that he was very staid. Actually, for Bruckner, Bernard Haitink is my favorite.
I recommend Otto Klemperer's Bruckner No. 6 with the New Philharmonia Orchestra (1964 recording in Kingsway Hall, London (on EMI)). William Mann spoke of Klemperer's "granite-like orchestral sonority, and an objectivity in his balance of form and content, that contrasted refreshingly with the styles of such idolized ocnductors as Furtwaengler, Bruno Walter, and even Toscanini."
Most remarkable, how this scherzo resembles that of Chaikovskij's Pathetique, which had not yet been written.
I'm sure that, if Bruckner and Chaikovskij had met, they would have made very good friends.

@belianis Indeed, the flowing string melodies are very Tchaikovskyesque. I almost hear hints of "Winter Daydreams".

Celibidache;s Bruckner was way slower that most but so deeply affecting.

Is this in 9/8 meter.
cubsrule2040 2 years ago
No, it's an ordinary 3/4 meter, but there are a lot of triplets in it.

What did Chaikovskii think of Bruckner? This scherzo definitely has a bit of Chaikovskiian spirit to it.

I agree. I see alot of similarities in the dramatic quality of both Bruckner's and Tchaikovsky's works.
