  • Wow-Words-Wonderful!

    Well, Would One Say-Yes!

  • magnificent.

  • I've always looked at Bowie as if he was my elder brother. I've always loved him and I've listen to all of his albums as soon as they were released. Life on Mars is one his very best songs and like it or not "I don't give a flying fuck" to quote David himself.

  • I've never really listened closely to the lyrics of this song before - WOW, they're good! :D

I've loved this song for some time now, but now that I know the lyrics I love it even more.

  • beautiful song, wish more 14 year olds like me appreciated this music.

  • 26 people were done in by Gene Hunt.

  • @ferretmyster or they r just tone deaf!

  • non è un gran chè questa canzone

  • maaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrsssssssss bar bar bar

  • cunts

  • Sometimes the world turns to be a little mad for me. Is there life on Mars?

  • I like how the pop-up ad is for a morning after pill, presumably because Bowie is a leading cause of pregnancy.

  • I wish i lived on mars

  • Ha, 24 people have dildo's in their ears!

  • No, Ziggy is not dead. He just went home.

  • bowie will never die

  • @caitlinwalkerx

    yes he will

  • Love It

  • Is Rolf Harris dead?

  • @The69ersFC no he was on piers morgans life stories last fortnight

  • Haunting...

  • i heard this song in Not Going Out episode Life On Mars Bars

  • I wonder if that rumor that he died was the result of time travelers watching his back... I.E. he actually died, but someone in the future saved him. Or perhaps it's a case of two parallel universes merging, one where he died, and one where he did not... I think I've been smoking a little too much of the happy plant :)

  • @flimflam384 Not the first time David Bowie and time travel have been connected.

  • i could also listen to this over an over. it took me 40min to listen to it on life an mars to get the name an artist :)

  • I could listen to this song over and over again....

  • :-)

  • Dear Youtube: When will you understand i'm not looking for mother fucking David Guetta?!

  • @patoelbuenoss hahahaha best comment ever!!!

  • @patoelbuenoss haha! you should write a letter to them :)

  • @SuperMrLahlou And they damn better listen to me or...ulgy stuff (?)

  • This whole thing reminds me of the Paul is dead thing, except with no creepy coincidences and the internet. lol

  • i lov this song

  • My god, hes beautiful<333333

  • David Bowie ur a Legend!!

  • Of course he's alive; the Sovereign still needs to get rid of Phantom Limb.

  • Oh yeah smexy Jareth Pic!!!!

  • He's like Jesus he just come back!!!!!!

  • At the end of Life on Mars, season 1, when this song came on, I felt so caught up in the moment, it was just so beautiful!

    Long Live Bowie!

  • @TheDrezden42 Man what a great show... the very end, dunno a little anti-climactic. But I get it and enjoyed the music, almost made me cry tears of joy knowing that people still know what real music is about-talent and skill.

  • when I see most of these comments, I feel the comments should not be enabled. What a bunch of meatheads....

  • David Bowie + Freddy Mercury = Epic winning.

100x better than the mainstream shit we have now.

  • the music reminds me of the song "all by myself".. is it just me?

  • @rosalbina188

Probably because it's in the same key. :)

  • I looked up David Bowie because of Demyx Time.

  • I have my own theory about the meaning of this song. like can you take your life and make it something better, a better life for yourself, or are you just going to stay in your familiar ordinary life (represented by earth) or are you going to try to make a new better life for yourself (represented by mars). Idk that’s just my interpretation, I know its not David Bowies meaning of the song but that’s what this song means to me XD

  • @IDidItSidsWay You are so smart just awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww <3333 I love you babe!

  • @arabianmetalhead99 thaks honey but im not smart, im just stating what the song means to me =)

  • @IDidItSidsWay The way you said it was very smart and yes you are.

  • @arabianmetalhead99 thank u :)

  • @IDidItSidsWay Finally, someone who can interpret songs for them self. On most music videos I watch there's always people arguing about what the meaning is.

The meaning is whatever you make it.

  • @ApertureAsshole well thank you so much :) its kind of pointless when people argue about song meanings. i mean i know maybe my interpretation is a bit out there and probably far from what David Bowie was thinking but hey, thats what it means to me and im not going to argue with someone who has a different interpretation. thank you again :)

  • @IDidItSidsWay That's a pretty awesome interpretation, actually. I like that.

  • @thewriter1008 thank you =)

  • Jareth the goblin king doesn't die.

  • Bowie will live on forever !

  • Hey... I know it may sound damn stupid, but what is this song all about? I understand what it means literally, but it happens I omit it's deeper meaning. My first contact with this song and artist was with Singstar karaoke game on PS2 and I remember this song as very hard to sing, especially that I never get what the heck it really means? Anybody could explain? Maybe there is something to connect this song with?

  • @LikePhoenixFromAshes

David Bowie said it was vaguely about "a sensitive young girl's reaction to her first encounter with the media" - how she's sort of disappointed with reality somehow, as if she's locked away from the larger-than-life world being shown to her on TV.

  • If he was dead, it would have been on headlines EVERYWHERE! Don't believe what dumb pricks post on facebook!!

  • Guy's seriously, if David Bowie died, it would probably be on the news. He's a music icon and we would know if he really died or not.

Thank God he didn't, love David.

  • Where the hell did that come from? Bowie's dead.

I'm glad he's not though, that would have made Iggy sad.

  • Hahahaha, David Bowie dead !! You guys must be on Mars !!! hahahahahhaha

  • lol you guys are stupid as shit.

    david bowie will never die.

  • HE'S NOT DEAD, DUMBASSES!

  • HE'S NOT DEAD, I totally freaked out when you said that.I was all "TO THE SEARCH BAR" but thank god it's a lie. everybody unlike the most liked comments there so that they're not the first ones people see.

  • Don't trust wikipedia

  • JESUS! You people nearly gave me a heart attack!

  • Omg, why do people always try to bury people before they're cold. David Bowie is quite alive. Geez,, c'mon, don't be afraid to use the internet to, y'know, check the facts first. [btw, Wikipedia should not be one's only source for info] More importantly, great, great video! Thank you for sharing this Bowie awesomeness!

  • David bowie não é cantor, é sim um carateca, todos sabem do seu passado, seu nariz é ferramenta de trabalho, estica um pra gente comemorar o tri do peixão ae narina de aspirador kkkkkkk

  • He's still alive, ya bastards!

  • He's not fucking dead.

There was some twat on Wikipedia making up shit, it appeared as if he was dead on the BBC Music site because they copy it straight from Wiki.

Both sites have corrected the mistake, there is nothing about it on the News, or on any of the other dozens of pages I have had up and have been obsessively refreshing constantly.

  • RIP best music ever...

  • R.I.P David Bowie, we will always remember you!

  • Why did he have to die like that?

  • R.I.P, thanks for your time here

  • i'm only 14 but i fucking love this song.

  • At the very end of this song, the piano comes back in as a reprise.., does anyone know what the producer ( or engineer ) is saying ? Is it ... Wonderful......OK ! ?

  • I just made a cool discovery at the microscope in the lab....now I'm listening to this song wich makes my soul (once again) leave my body and enjoy it double hahahaha

  • Why don't they write songs this good anymore??

  • Comment removed

  • @pckid888 Cause people are plastic nowadays ?

  • Why don't they write songs this good anymore??

  • Never heard this song before. Doing it now, can't help gettin shivers down my spine. Love it. Thanks, Bowie.

  • Fantastic song.., awesome lyrics. Great piano playing by Rick Wakeman of Yes fame. There will never be another Bowie !

  • It'd be cool if we discover intellegent life on mars and when we go there we find that they have a song called 'life on earth?' :)

  • I woke up at 4 am with this song in my head :) i just had to listen to it.

  • feel it look at the cave man go

  • bowie makes awesome songs and the tv show to life on mars and ashes to ashes were awesome

  • great song and great tv show

  • Is there life on Mars? No. But if there was, they'd probably be listening to this!

  • Well I'm a music major and I have NO problem with this chord progression. What even makes a chord progression simple? If it's used all the time? Bowie uses a I, IV, vi, (flat)VI, V progression in this song which isn't even all that common. Either way it's irrelevant because it's more important what you do with the chord progression than the the actual progression itself, and in that regard Bowie strikes pure gold with this chorus. Don't always trust a music major ;D

  • at the top of the pop-rock music

  • Why is everyone talking about how this song can't be good because it has a simple chord progression? What the hell? Since when does the structure of a song constitute whether it's good or not? Some of the most wonderful, moving songs are really simple and easy to play. I personally find this song beautiful, but if it doesn't move you, it just doesn't move you and that's okay, but it has nothing to do with how the freaking song is composed.

  • @daydreambeliever14 Wat. Someone says this song can't be good just because it's simple.

    DAH FURRRK

  • This song is amazing.

  • My experience is music majors often miss the point of music after awhile and become a bit too heady. I think the key to this song is the theatricality and the emotion of it's delivery.

  • @tykerdog33

I didn't feel any emotion in this song though. Not from analyzing the music, but just listening to it, i didn't get moved and this song and it was supposed to be a great anthem (which is what I was looking for). I was let down. Check out "Sing" by My Chemical Romance... Now that is an anthem.

  • @ryanmhowerton OK. You where after something pretty different. Life on Mars is totally different then Sing. I couldn't imagine Life on Mars playing at a sports event. I can see why you where let down. I guess it's not really an anthem. More like a torch song or ballad.

  • Comment removed

  • @ryanmhowerton

I think you still have to learn a lot about music.;-)

  • @SarahSportGirl8 Did she cover it? Cause that sounds like it might be pretty good.

  • i hate pricks that ask for thumbs up, i dont gee a fuck who sent you here either. I WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG SHUT THE FUCK UPPPPP

  • you know you guys are assholes...its one of my favorite songs.....im 12 and still like it when i used to listen to it over and over when i was like 2 and 4

  • Thumbs up if your brain and ears (not infected by Lady Gaga) sent you here!

  • nobody gives a fuck who sent you here.

  • Lady Gaga brought me here.

  • hey, it looks that this song is a little faster than version in /watch?v=v--IqqusnNQ . Which is real version?? Or both are real??

  • wonder if mick ronson is the guitar player on this?

  • One of my favourite David Bowie songs.

  • Beautiful song

  • Why is everyone talking about the damn tv show? this song is EPIC

  • i saw him 5times on stage- a monument

  • I kind of liked the ending of the show, but still I wish there were more seasons

  • al mondo esistono 17 persone che non capiscono una sega!

  • yeah the show by the same name is OFF THE CHARTS. how do shows like that not get picked up, but we have 3 versions of Wipeout or whatever? what is wrong with this picture? oh thats right! _> all any of the Americans IN TV POWER worry about is what makes money NOTHING ELSE. im saying this as an American so fuk u haters.

  • @gaylordhomer4 If they don't make money then they can't air the shows anyway, so be happy with what you have.

  • @gaylordhomer4 no the people in show business typically care most about money, and the shit they put on tv / make movies about is what WE the majority want. Can't blame them for that. Blame the american people

  • amazing voice

  • very touching.

  • bloody excellent. another song they'll still be listening to in 100 years

  • I adore this song so much.

  • I just finished the American version of Life On Mars. I have to say that despite what everyone says, I liked the ending. However, I've watched a few episodes of the UK version, and I plan to keep going.

  • ...David Bowie-sensei.

  • The moment this is used in the Lars Von Trier film "Breaking The Waves" completely ripped my heart out!

My favourite well known Bowie track. The obscure track I love is "Always Crashing In The Same Car", off "Low".

  • every time i hear the 'sailors fighting in the dance hall' part the hairs in my neck stand up

  • This is one of those songs where you have to ask what's the message? More than might first be assumed? Ah yes, Mr. Racist. We see you!

  • to my mother, my dog and clowns.

  • It was Bowies revenge for his song being copied on My Way, so he didnt change it and if you compare the two songs, you can tell that theres no coincidence that they sound alike

  • @musicalinfluenced sorry for the unnecessary bile. and thanks. i'll bear in mind your advice in the future. i guess i got hooked into the bullshit

one-upmanship comment style on youtube. i've removed the post. cheers. mmt

  • @markmarktarmann, yep fair enough, I know what you mean, as much as they irritate me too, I tend to leave them to their depressed little lives haha!

  • The ending to Life on Mars was great but bitter sweet. The American version had a down right silly ending that was not worth the wait, it was almost as if it was dumbed down for the American audience

  • @TinyVivi3041 The sad part is that I actually liked the American version better overall, despise the ending.

  • @Austionous It's been a long time since I've seen the American version, but I just watch the UK version and I think I prefer that than US. How the ended the American version really pissed me off, making my interest in the show look sad.... I'm still a fan, though.

  • I dont give a flying shit about any TV crappy show that has the same name. This is one of the best songs ever written.

  • @123jsbach You obviously don't know Life on Mars if you think it's crappy C:

Anyways, it doesn't only have the same name, it features many of Bowie's masterpieces throughout it.

Knowing this song because of the show means no disrespect to the song, which is excellent.

  • @dreamsorrow3 I realise the current media culture exposes people to music that they would maybe otherwise not hear. However, I was really highlighting the fact that it is one of the best songs ever written and stands by itself as so. Bowie is frickn awesome.

  • @dreamsorrow3 I've never seen Life on Mars. Is this the main theme? And yes, I agree. Just because someone found out about a song through a TV show doesn't mean that they aren't true fans. The fact that they're here means something that they like the song enough to listen to it on their own time.

  • @thewriter1008 This song is just a small part of the series. Its about an English policeman who's in a coma and gone back in time to the 70s. Its one of the best things I've ever seen on tv and I REALLY recomend you watch it. Oh and don't bother with the American version, the English version is much better. :3

  • @ApertureAsshole haha...dont even talk about the american version.

  • @ApertureAsshole I found the American version on DVD. Couldn't find the BBC version. But I absolutely LOVE IT! With every episode, it gets better.

  • @thewriter1008 Theres also "Ashes to Ashes". Its awesome as well. But I'm not sure if theres an American version.

  • @123jsbach Watch the show.

  • Mars was the best show whats up with these stupid shows now this song brings me back memory awesome nice vid p:

  • Maybe he means "lennon". This is the greatest song ever!! The tv show is fantastic. UK VERSION. Not the American one- that one is good sort of... but the UK, please look it up if you havent seen it. It rocks...!! and this song takes to a different dimension.

  • @mancerab3 true i watched the uk version it was epic

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe he means "lennon"

  • Funny... I've always thought it was "look at those gay men go" XD

  • It's kind of a shame that most fans of this song probably haven't heard of the superstar whose piano work here practically makes the song: Rick Wakeman (he also does his own versions of this tune, FYI).

  • David is from mars

  • My favorite song today

  • Life on mars is epicest, yet the best tv show ever!

  • The pic is from Labyrinth

  • Correction: "Lenin is on sale again."

The song is referring to Vladamir Lenin. Lennon released working class hero in 1970, a year before. However, this is a mere coincidence. In 1970, there was a strike in the Lenin shipyard. Gdansk agreement. And "socialist worker" literature is sold during such disputes. The workers made the news, they have struck for fame. Striking to get on the news.

This history fits into the lyrics. Reels to reels of news were shown during movies, at the time.

  • one of the best songs of all time .. hail bowie
