the fucking thing a goddamn puzzle!!!

  • I remember about 4 years ago when I first discovered this. 4 years later and I still watch It :)

  • First video I saw on the channel way back when. Classic stuff.

  • The metallic second part is a RF (Radio Frequency) shield (in a Faraday cage configuration) which keeps stray radio frequencies from the motherboard and peripheral devices from interfering with your other electronics (like cellphones and stereos). Helpful video - I think I'll follow along with my own G3!

  • I have the exact same TV stand as you! NICE video david!

  • i think the drive bay for the dvd rom and harddrive comes out so you can do it out of the case. i think i seen pictures of that. is one of these worth $25?

  • you shouldn't put RAM on carpet.

  • The metal "block" thing is the Faraday Cage, it's supposed to block interference/noise. well, that's the case with the eMac, and also the speakers :)

  • But, Does it blend?

  • i have an i mac but when i want to upgrade some programs i need a password and i dont know the password what can i do

  • wow that thing has a faraday shield on it, its that metal mesh

  • it should run Tiger cuz you dont have to upgrade to have it

  • my imac g3 runs mac os x tiger and it can handle ilife '08

  • At my school, I installed OS X on 40+ of these machines. I didn't have to upgrade any firmware/software and they all work fine.

Also, you don't know scary. Try to replace the hard drive in a 700/800MHz eMac and then come talk to me. You have to remove the heatsink that is somehow screwed on top of the CRT and the mobo is connected somehow... those things are a mess.

I do love these iMac G3s, though. Great computers.

  • SHould have gut it, and put in a mac mini with an LCD screen. It's not too hard and you'd but modern day.

  • 26 DEGREES?! THATS BELOW FREEZIng TEPERTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I have iMac G3 450MHz, 512 MB RAM, DVD, 40GB HD

but it does not have any OS at all. I guess I need to first install OS 9 and then upgrade to OS X. Can't find OS 9. Would appreciate your help to find it. Thanks.

  • @sumitsaluja Hey sumits.

You can find OS 9 on ebay, just search Mac OS 9.1 and you should get loads of results

  • @youwe4 Would you recommend getting a G3 like for David's purpose?

  • @colton101998 Yeah.. I would..

But I'm getting a iMac G3 in like a day or so, just for word processing and games.

  • @colton101998 built in Apache web server? and if the price is right heck yah!!

  • @gtrfurby Whats a Apache server?

  • @colton101998 its a web server.

  • my sister wants a macbook for Christmas and most likely I'm gonna be stuck setting it up lol. but it should be interesting to set up because I never used a mac before, I've seen them but never used them, I really like to use one, maybe even own one but I have to much stuff thats windows only.

  • Dunno if you saw it but you can put a hard drive in that larger than 128GB, you would have to boot into OS X, then partition the drive to 128GB and then install SpeedTool's High Cap ATA driver software and partition the rest into another partition. Also I wouldn't recommend doing work like that on a carpeted floor...

  • lol god bless you seagate.

  • how can you find a better hard drive for an imac g3? i have a imac g3 and i am going to upgrade from 384 mb or ram to 1 gb of ram. i also want to get a better hard drive cause i only have a 20 gb hard drive and it's really annoying!!! can u help me?

  • i love that hard drive sound

  • Suppose you could run Linux on that bad boy?

  • 'OK are u guys ready to make history? Ok not make history that's a little dramatic....'

  • boring

  • my imac g3 died for no reason :'( it sux

  • now try to install linux!

  • At 8:15, I'm sure someone else mentioned this, but it's called a Faraday cage; it blocks harmful EMI from getting into the computer and being released by the computer.

  • HAHA! "Oh YEAH!" :)

  • You don't need to put new cable in

  • OMG you go on and on abit just get to the point will you

  • Use captions and SHUT THE FUCK UP next time, your voice is way to stereotypical gay/slut.

  • can you use pc ram inside a imac?

  • @TheMacTechnology yep, but it has to be the right type of ram, these g3 imacs use pc-100 RAM.

  • @TheMacTechnology Suree can!

  • just got an original bondi blue tray loading imac g3 with OS 8.6 that basically hasn't been touched for ten years-its in perfect condition, but it's archaic, any ideas where to start, and also, how much did all this end up costing you?

  • exactly what kind of internal harddrive would i nneed to upgrade the imac g3 like waht kind western digital or seaform XD lolz

  • After 10 years the iMac intel will be approximate £100-£200!

  • how much it when it came out?

  • hey nice video can you tell me dost this imac work with the ipod touch and 9.2 itunes

  • dont you love the mac startup sound?

  • great video man

  • hmmm....

will it play crysis maxed out

    XD

  • what you said was pliers was wire cutters. LMTO X3

  • the annoying noise hdd is a fireball

  • Rofl the IDE cable was for a pc so it is long as hell. Should have used the old one. Just bought one of these iMacs off eBay for £10

  • Wait.... 7 GB? .... is that what he said?. What is that like one 60 second iTunes song and two pictures? I see now why you needed the new hard drive.

  • @pokemondude121 face-palm*, because what you commented was so ridiculous and failed. Sorry but I couldn't let you get a way with saying a 1 minute song and two photos took up 7 GB.

  • @aflockofmusic2 I know... I was being sarcastic. 7 GB can fit a lot more than that... Still.. it's a small Hard drive.

  • @pokemondude121 A 7 GB hard drive could hold around 1,500 iTunes songs, but because of the operating system taking up space, probably about 1,000 songs. Still terrible by today's standards, but not as bad as you make it out to be lol! :D

  • @mvkVirtual You're forgetting about applications. I've got nothing on my iBook except a few pictures and 15 of my 40 GB Hard Drive is filled. It's all in applications. It probably has more than the average laptop but still... But I do have to admit that when I wrote that comment I didn't know much about HD space but I know a bit more now... LOL

  • @pokemondude121 Yeah, I forgot about that! I suppose with all apps installed you would only have around 2-3 GB left! Its good that it doesn't support leopard because that would take up almost all of the 7 GB hard drive, without applications, lol. I think David made a good choice maxing out the hard drive!

  • @mvkVirtual Definitely a good decision. 120 GB is a huge difference compaired to 7 GB.

  • You should have taken a SolidStateDisk for real hard disk coolness !!

  • @SportMegane SSD's have sata connections and you need a ata hard drive for older machines like this one. I tried a ata to sata card, but data transfer was to slow to boot the imac.

  • Comment removed

  • os 9 lol

  • LESS talky, MORE instally!!

  • that hard drive is dying!

  • Check out my imac g3 video. i took the hard drive out of it. mine's almost the same but 400 mhz

  • Don't the official specs say it can only go up to 512Mb of RAM?

  • This whole video is the camera on the dudes face instead of an upgrade video. You terd!!

  • haha! i thought you weren't joking at first about the final cut rendering. u got me, haha

  • lol halo 3 soundtrack in the background

  • im currently installing os 10.2 onto a powermac g3. time remaining. 1 hour 11 minutes. Yay. what takes an hour?

  • your a joke ster !

  • what a faggot

  • i love the way you see something and take ur camera round ur room

  • why have you removed my comment you ignorant "nerd" sort that voice out! btw you no nothing about computers

  • i cnt wait till mine comes!!!!!!

  • The iMac G3 was such an awesome computer/design, thumbs up if you agree, down if you dont.

  • @iMacG3Fan oops i accidentally voted down... wtf is the "down" on the left?

  • @iMacG3Fan i just bought an iMac G3 Lime for $50USD today!

  • @iMacG3Fan

I want to have your babies.

  • @iMacG3Fan I agree big time! It is amazing! I want one here soon.

  • @Pizzscn this is the first computer I ever used. I actually have the model before that one! And the corresponding iBook clamshell. I tore out it's insides, and put in MacBook hardware. Now the thing's running OSX 10.6.2

  • @numbernineinc

hello! sorry for comment creeping, but I couldn't help but catch my interest on this comment. perhaps you could enlighten me on something regarding you g3 desktop.

What is the RAM on it? and Did you have to install a different processor? among others things? Thanks in advance.

  • @chica476 it is running on 4GB of RAM, I technically didn't have to install a new processor, but I replaced the Motherboard with that of an Apple MacBook (2007) and replaced the CRT with an LCD. It is basically a different computer on the iMac shell, it throws people off though...

  • @numbernineinc

But, if you didn't install a better processor, it would be pretty slow, wouldn't it? One more thing, if you would, how did you tear the motherboard out? I often heard people that Macs were not upgradeable. Suppose there is any chance of me being able to do what you did?

    Thanks again.

  • @chica476 I didn't just install a new processor, I replaced the entire motherboard (which includes the CPU). And you are correct, macs are not upgradeable at this level, hence the DIY. In this situation, the Dremel tool is your friend, though since the MacBook mobo was so small, I only used it for screw holes. the old mobo literally just slides out of the mac's case (only on the tray loading versions though)... it is basically a different computer in an iMac G3 case

  • @numbernineinc

oh, and also. Would it still be usable if one were to keep the CRT instead of the LCD?

    Thanks.

  • @chica476 It would, though it is not practical because of all the electricity it takes up. I used the LCD because the only thing I had to modify was the case... all I did was remove it, and the LCD already had the VGA connection, All I had to do was find a short cable, a VGA to mini DVI (or whatever it is these days), and Done! this whole setup is more practical if you use a Mac Mini Motherboard because it has a more standard Power supply interface. no fiddling with magsafe!

  • I'm curious, what is the screen savers name that's on your power book behind you @ 01:49 ?

  • @supershaun91 its the itunes artwork one

  • I really want one of those. This computer model made me an Apple fan.

  • @Pizzscn Dude, I have two that I need to get rid of... I don't want to throw them out, I recently bricked one of them because I was messing around in root user, and deleted the System folder.

  • @numbernineinc Cool. I would take one but I think I'm good

  • i could've got one of these for £10 the other day! :(

  • @GreatDude2008 Got 30 Bucks? I got two that I need to get rid of... I'm willing to sell one for 15... (I want an iPad, but lack the Ca$h to do that)

  • hey, i was wondering if the imac g3 had a removable graphics card. or a spot for a new one anyways.

  • Mac os 9 is the BEST How Dare you?

  • mac os 9 might be good but its not better than osx and its not compatible with like, anything...

  • probably my fav video ever on your channel david lol this series is what made me subscribe i think ! lol more frustrated david ftw ! lol

  • you do know that if a 250 is cheaper or something, itll just truncate it. also, there are drivers that will make it work just fine, look at intech's ata 6 driver

  • That hdd noise! Mine makes the same noise! I thought I was that the CRT was making that noice! Haahhahaha

  • a 7200 rpm hdd will work fine, I have a 40 gb 7200 rpm maxtor drive in my iMac g3

  • lol "do i use the old cable or the new one"

    the old one

the new cable is long coz its made to strech across a pc case not a 5cm gap in a mac and the ends cane be plugged in anywhere

  • im using medium-high spec PCs atm, because its better performance cheaper with some tweaking.

when i can afford the new 8-core mac pro, or the quad-core imac, i will.

  • HOW MUCH IS OS TIGER FULL INSTALL.please help me :)

  • Just use the old ribbon cable.

  • @xj51 you're just so ignorant, you should take a chill pill and go sit somewhere.

  • Comment removed

  • well its a Imac apple (G3 =table notebook with tube), . lol upgrades in hardware are just terrible... unless you own a mac pro and you have money as hell. :o( hehe I had two of the same 120GB drives in my pc running. they are now only used as extern drives, much too small.

  • My 180 gigs harddrive makes more sound. It's SO annoying. My computer is like a vacuum.

  • Wow! My 68GB hdd makes alot of sound too!

  • did you know that the imac g3 is the most dangerous computer to upgrade it can shock you and kill you. and also the imac g3 can not handle 2 512mb ram sticks it can handle 1 128mb ram plus 1 512mb ram stick.

  • i got a 120gb seagate barracuda hard drive for free out of a computer bin. It was in a static proof bag, no bad sector!

  • What fermware and how can I put more ram in my Imac g3

  • Hay this is a dum qustion what's fermware an I have a 600 MHz can I fit more ram

  • Why do I always fall for your jokes?

  • Who is alfred ? Everyone talks about him. Someone give me a link to his channel or something
