Another great artist of Chicago obscurity is Lefty Dez. A tall slender bubble-eyed guitarist that had a style between muddy waters and Chuck Berry. Like many blues legends he found more fame in Europe. A regular at the Kingston Mines and a showman similar to the early Hendrix was a big influence on my left handed technique. He died due to liver failure because he was always paid in liquor tips instead of cash. Some videos may be found on youtube. "THE BOY IS BIG IN EUROPE CLEO".
A blues legend Johnny Little John obsecure Southern Blues Guitar Player, was also a great teacher for Cleo Patricx. I remember well my first gig at 16 after he showed me an E7 chord and a lumpty-lump Chuck Berry lick. He looks over at me and says, "son do you think you got it"? Like an anxious pup I would say, "yep"! That's when I got the most famous quote in the world. "BOY YOU AINT GOT THE BLUES 'TIL YOU SMELL THE FOTT OF UH COUNTRY MULE".
Fucking great story. And great playing too. Shame there isnt more of an audience for real tunes theses days every one wants some cardboard garbage, shit in a pan, and they want to hear it 'performed' exactly as it sounds on that cardboard CD when they pay their dollars too hear it 'live'. Hope you keep playing Cleo.
..at the time, my lead vocalist, his nephew, had just been found shot to death in his apartment.
He confessed to us in the mens' room that he was gay, and had shot his nephew for messing with his 'woman.' The funny thing is, he said "I killed him because I was in love with him and not the woman," and then he said, "Don't piss on me and tell me it's raining." With a glassy look in his eye, he said, "If you ever tell, I'll kill you." Johnny died 2 years ago, and the funeral was a rainy day.

As I am from the West Side of Chicago, as a youth I was always talking to an alley mechanic or an older blues legend in the neighborhood.
