well what if the feeds other people follow are not local? besides do you really need a computer to tell you important information like fire's? look at the news or go outside to see it for yourself. Besides
BRo, u noticed that the Twitter website actually is famous because of haters? I never knew twitter existed until i found a hater... now i use it... lol.
The first time I ever heard about Twitter, it was through some friends. I was told they use it to "broadcast" news about each other - usually untrue, but usually funny nonetheless. I only joined for that reason. Then I stopped paying attention to it because they were using it less. Now I follow my friends on facebook instead.
Hope you didn't' unfollow me because of my strawberries and wine tweet the other day. I like to share feelgoods!
I actually came to see the vid you promised Curt! WHERE IS IT?!!!!
Also, Twitter is great fun when there is a very big event happening - eg. Eurovision Song Contest and people's reactions to the different songs and costumes etc. Really enhanced the experience of watching the show live!
I've not tried Twitter yet. I have a hard time with the limitations of verbage on Youtube when I'm making a comment. The good news is that Youtube helps me become more succinct. But Twitter!!!!! It's useful for minor things. If it's an emergency, I'd rather be called or if it's national or global, I'm hoping the major networks will have it covered before the Twitterologists do. They will not be able to tell me enough about whatever's happening. I'm trying to catch up on vids. Five!
If you are on Facebook, you can cross-tweet - ie. when you post something one place, it is also posted the other. Makes networking a bit easier. Also, there are some good tweets from politicians and such!
U've got sum good views, I've tried Twitter but couldn't get a grasp of it, so at the moment, I don't like it either. Diff courses 4 diff horses, I'm not gonna put it down. No matter what people do, there will b others who will put them down 4 it!
lol you learned of the hudson river plane landing through people on twitter??? Your just as bad as a tabloid follower. For one if a plane crash is important news to you, you need to rethink your life, and 2 if you think that word of mouth throught the internet is a good way of learning about things that are important to you you need to wake up! Twitter is more social networking crap that we dont need because WE ALREADY HAVE IT through youtube, myspace, facebook, and digg.
Actually, we have it on radio and television - important news. BUT, not everyone has access to either during their day, or actually prefers quiet to the constant nattering of radio or TV. Twitter shows the 10 most written words at the time you update. A while ago it was Eurovision, right now there are things like Air France and Sims 3. It is just a little finger on the pulse of what people are interested in at the mo. And NOT media - PEOPLE - which is something completely different often!
I appreciate Twitter as the latest in cultural phenom. A zillion people can't be all that wrong. I think it's great for people who can say little in as few words as possible. lol. I have trouble wrestling in my need to express the written word in commentary form on Youtube. The way I see it, I don't judge it because it does not suit me. I feel that if it suits others and they dig it, then it's all good.
with all these things, they are what you make of them and you get out of it what you are willing to put in.
This video did remind me that a few weeks back I posted a 'just eaten a yoghurt' twitter update, I hope you understood that was meant as an ironic update pretty much supporting one of your points made in this video about OTT updating
I still love twitter although I will admit to following several celebrities which seems sell-out like. But it's fun and really insightful into what people do during their day.
Could this be yet another sign that the fourth estate is getting extremely worried by social networking sites? Articles such as this ill informed diatribe have been penned many times before and no doubt will be again whenever reporters and their editors feel threatened.
Is Twitter journalism? Of course not, but neither is an article which is heavily biased one way or another. Selective reportage can in no way be considered journalism.
Hmmm, quite a bit like YT - front page is usually full of vapid nonsense, but the people I know and like bring content worth my time. Perfect description, thank you.
Mostly, the only thing to be disappointed in is how overrated it is. I actually rather use something simpler and avoid all that 'media hype' and 'fanboy-ism' on the site. If I were to create an account now, it would be dead in less than a week. Either because I don't care, or it's just not worth the effort.
Mostly, you'll just be making friends and watching/reading TV on the internet. I can do that in any community site, and just sit by my TV to watch it. I find it rather redundant, not useful.
Exactly; it's all a matter of who you follow. These idiots writing these articles just look at random public posts and think that they know something.
I haven't hung out there as much as I should - I've only twittered around occasionally - hmmmm; maybe I should give this twitter a bit more twitty thoughts?? Love your vlog!
Mr. Vapidchick has no clue. He was probably assigned to look into Twitter and write about it when he would've rather had a different assignment.
And based on your interpretation of him, I'd say he might also be drunk.
I only Twitter about my recent obsession with Lost. Is that interesting or useful? HELL NO, but I don't live near wild fires or brush my hair anymore so what else am I gonna talk about?
The idea of being basic microvlogging makes it slightly vapid...but for me, that adds to me fleshing out the friends I have online. But to get info out, whether it's as an aggrigator (sp?) as you said, or on a more local level to find things out, it's amazing. For ex., if a band has a free CD online, you can post that immediately for all your followers to see. It's such a simple idea it's brilliant. And as Phil pointed out, it does connect so many of us. Great vlog!
On Jan. 1, 2008, the CrocFather made a video announcing one of many accounts that OhCurtZilla344 had eventually opened up. Thanks to that video, I opened up my own Twitter account.
Another aspect of twitter is that it makes me feel less alone. I can't interact with tv or radio. But most of the people I follow on Twitter are not just trusted sources of information or amusement, but many are people I know in real life or have developed enough of an online relationship to have genuine affection for them. All over the world! (including you, Ken :) There is genuine emotional sustenance.
Your comment about not leaving the radio or tv on all day makes a very important point. Many people (most?) do keep tv or radio on all day and keep a steady stream of mindless chatter going on in the background. To me that is so much more sucky. Twitter does give info very succinctly and lets you drill down to more detailed info only if you want it. Tv and radio don't do that. The author of this article is not a journalist either. He missed the real story.
He willfully missed the story through sloppy research. Even if you don't like the web site you're writing about, you gotta register and at least give it a try. That he only looked at the public stream was too painfully evident.
I first heard of the quake this afternoon on Twitter as well (but not from Mr. Safety). And, yes, I immediately called my folks to make sure they were okay. Go Twitter!
I like it though you do have to be really perticular on who you follow.I've had to quit a few ppl that would go upwards of 100 a day i usually do 5 to 15 at the most but that allways depends on who else is tweeting and such.Great video and i think i'll check out your twitter it sounds like one to follow.
The main thing is to not feel obligated to read everything somebody posts, just what's happening now - and if any one person you follow takes up the whole page: un-follow. Simple rules for twitter enjoyment!
I've checked out a few twitter feeds of other people. It seems like most people use it as an ongoing conversation and you have to click on the links to see both sides of the conversation. I haven't really seen a good reason to bother setting up an account!!!
It's different looking at a single person's feed and signing up and looking at the feed of all your friends shuffled together. Those conversations make sense when you are following them all, no clicking required.
If it weren't for some dude following me from a search on the word "fishing", I never would have learned what a raccoon dog was. And I never would have stayed up late with several folks all over the world, trying to figure the darned thing out. The story is longer but I'm running out of characters.
Mostly, though, I'm one of those lazy posters. LeSigh. Will try to do better. I don't want Twitter to suck.
Interesting statistic - I think for people who've never blogged/vlogged/etc., there would be a high drop off rate. But I'm a tenacious little bugger...
Yeah, we say that now. But what happened to Myspace and soon to be, Youtube.
Rumors much?
People will get tired of "Twitting" (I don't know how that became a comprehensible word in the english language), and I think I'll stay away from that kind of stuff, thank you.
Think of it as waves of a dying storm that approached the shores too soon.
when bitches on the view be sayin "twigga", as in "those are my twiggas" or "tweeps", its gone a little too far for me to be interested in especially since I never checked it out originally or found it to be any sort of a necessity. even my mom now all she does is talk about twitter....
I like the idea of twitter but lack the technology. I cannot be plugged in to it all the time and do not want to come home to 300 tweets! I'm just not that plugged in.
The realization that helped me was that I don't have to go back and read all 300 tweets. I can click and see if there's any replies or personal messages to me - but otherwise, Twitter is of the moment - I only need to scan the most current tweets to partake.
It sounds you use Twitter pretty much the same as me Ken & like you, i was sceptical at first too.
it's also pretty much the same way that i view & use YouTube. Avoid the front page & search out the good stuff & interesting people who make good content :)
I guess it depends on who and how many you follow - and if you feel obligated to read everything, or just what happens to be happening at the moments you check in.
I was only following 40 or so good friends, but they have a lot going on in their lives... It just became too much to follow. Plus I got used to being out of the loop when being overseas, and now that I'm headed back, I've just twitter on the back burner permanently.
I see twitter as "public texting." It is rather useful when planning a group event. It definitely has a place in our "connected" world. That same article (and cover graphic) appeared in the News & Review. I think schools need to have a class called "relevancy" in which students learn their place in the world... and how important it is, or isn't, to share mundane details of one's life. Like eveything else, twitter is what you make it. That is what the author is missing.
Fact of the day: Zaitchik is a general Slavic word for 'rabbit'. Feeling smarter? :>
Also, you're one of just 20 people I follow on Twitter. Because your twits are either witty, thought-provoking or just blatantly outrageuos :> (The replies dont count.)
Now it's frustrating seeing the puzzled look people have even when they're trying their best to "get" Twitter because you just have to try it.
Back in the day when I was in college the big thing was making journalism a profession like doctor, lawyer, etc and I don't think those folks who bought into that are handling the death of msm and newpapers very well now...
The thing is, there's still a place for in-depth reporting and analysis that the average person doesn't have the time to do for themselves. But if all they give us is crap, hey, we can do that without 'em!
Had a bright young guy working for me a few years ago just graduating from Walter Cronkite School of Journalism here and interned at The Arizona Republic (bleech) online and it was pretty weird experience. We talked about it.
Ha! I RT this on Twitter and go look at my twitter page and see @gsnyder retweeted it. I know he must've watched it and that's proof twitter can connect different orbits in unsuspecting ways!
Journalists are a dime a dozen. GOOD journalists who can dig deeper and tell us something that isn't rumour or gossip are worth their weight in gold. Journalists who can spell and write grammatically correct are also very nice to have! But NEWS as such - ie. Something we don't already know - is very good to get from the internet community as well. THEN we can go check out what "real" journalists have found out about it. Latest case, the Air France accident.
How 'does' one really explain Twitter, JrSynderJr? How does one explain Kenrg? Why can't Kenrg can't explain it in 140 characters (15 seconds)? It is 'neat' to see you guys on your blogs, youtube, twitter, etc - it does make the world interconnected. Is maybe the only real way to look at twitter, youtube, etc by looking at it long term - 10 years from now, we'll still be checking blogs, youtube videos, and tweets - Who's looking out for the 'quiet time' of contemplation?
ah my friend ons, you have struck the note I was trying to hit well over a year ago in my vid "Online Social Networking." It can't be totally explained but I've been convinced that 10 years from now the community we have formed will still be around. We'll be reading each others' life stories we;ve e-published!
I say this because not only do I have several relatives scattered across the world online with me and friends from the old bbs days and the 90s sub to me here and follow me on Twitter
I think print journalist are just angry with online social media. Paper can not keep up with "the internets". When the average Joe or Jane can recreate (verbatim) most of the articles that journalists put out their, it takes away the importance of 'the press'. Print media needs to really take advantage of social media and experience it before they bash it. We need the press for important news, no more of this "did you see the dress she was wear" 'news'
That's a great point! I've stopped watching CNN years ago because they were hung up on the cult of celebrity every 20 minutes. So now we shun the popular media, spread the news ourselves and they have a problem with it. They need to really get bent. In 140 characters or less, of course!
Very very true! Many people see only the self-indulgent "woke up" tweets when they first join...I surely did. But the chorus of tweets introducing me to phrases I love to read, links I'd never have found, viewpoints I hadn't considered, news that mattered to me, etc. long ago changed my perspective. I'm glad one of those useful links led me here to your well-articulated vlog, Ken! Now back to that Kinks/Stones classic album investigation... :)
I love that we had that Kinks/Stones/Beatles discussion on Twitter while this was uploading. Perfect example of a positive use of it that I didn't put in the vlog. To an uninvolved bystander that discussion may have seemed vapid, but it made me happy.
We all do the occasional "Late for work" tweet - but on the balance, the people I follow give me good content. If you expect every tweet to be genius, it'll suck.
Exactly - But non-twittering writers keep churning out these hit pieces and quite obviously didn't bother to create an account and give it a try from the inside first.
if you think twitter sucks give me a hell yeah

Another aspect of twitter is that it makes me feel less alone. I can't interact with tv or radio. But most of the people I follow on Twitter are not just trusted sources of information or amusement, but many are people I know in real life or have developed enough of an online relationship to have genuine affection for them. All over the world! (including you, Ken :) There is genuine emotional sustenance.
Good vlog.

markapsolon 2 years ago
It's twit for twat all the time now.
kenrg 2 years ago
Your comment about not leaving the radio or tv on all day makes a very important point. Many people (most?) do keep tv or radio on all day and keep a steady stream of mindless chatter going on in the background. To me that is so much more sucky. Twitter does give info very succinctly and lets you drill down to more detailed info only if you want it. Tv and radio don't do that. The author of this article is not a journalist either. He missed the real story.
FantasticBabblings 2 years ago
He willfully missed the story through sloppy research. Even if you don't like the web site you're writing about, you gotta register and at least give it a try. That he only looked at the public stream was too painfully evident.

Mr. Safety went through a earthquake today that was immediately twittered (tweeted?) Twittley Diddley dee.
legalass17 2 years ago
I first heard of the quake this afternoon on Twitter as well (but not from Mr. Safety). And, yes, I immediately called my folks to make sure they were okay. Go Twitter!
kenrg 2 years ago
I like it though you do have to be really perticular on who you follow.I've had to quit a few ppl that would go upwards of 100 a day i usually do 5 to 15 at the most but that allways depends on who else is tweeting and such.Great video and i think i'll check out your twitter it sounds like one to follow.
bearchay889 2 years ago
The main thing is to not feel obligated to read everything somebody posts, just what's happening now - and if any one person you follow takes up the whole page: un-follow. Simple rules for twitter enjoyment!
kenrg 2 years ago
I got bored with Twitter. Plus I keep getting spam to links and stuff, no real "journal" like Twitter promised.
Talljim01 2 years ago
There's a certain amount of spam everywhere - I guess it all comes down to who you follow and what you choose to click.
kenrg 2 years ago
I've checked out a few twitter feeds of other people. It seems like most people use it as an ongoing conversation and you have to click on the links to see both sides of the conversation. I haven't really seen a good reason to bother setting up an account!!!
blackturtleshow 2 years ago
It's different looking at a single person's feed and signing up and looking at the feed of all your friends shuffled together. Those conversations make sense when you are following them all, no clicking required.
kenrg 2 years ago
Twitter is one of my online happy places.
I don't want Twitter to suck.
ebiannah 2 years ago
Stay happy! - Don't suck ;^)

I am on the fence... Over 60 percent of users stop tweeting after one month... I use it to promote mostly... BTW, nice bedroom design!
PhillFlash 2 years ago
Interesting statistic - I think for people who've never blogged/vlogged/etc., there would be a high drop off rate. But I'm a tenacious little bugger...
And Hey - Good to see you, been a while!

I like the idea of twitter but lack the technology. I cannot be plugged in to it all the time and do not want to come home to 300 tweets! I'm just not that plugged in.
periurban 2 years ago
The realization that helped me was that I don't have to go back and read all 300 tweets. I can click and see if there's any replies or personal messages to me - but otherwise, Twitter is of the moment - I only need to scan the most current tweets to partake.
kenrg 2 years ago

It sounds you use Twitter pretty much the same as me Ken & like you, i was sceptical at first too.
it's also pretty much the same way that i view & use YouTube. Avoid the front page & search out the good stuff & interesting people who make good content :)
andymooseman 2 years ago
Exactly - On YT I enter at my subscriptions page - No need for the public stream.
kenrg 2 years ago
There is just too much in a feed. I've enjoyed my time away from it, I doubt I'll go back.
qiranger 2 years ago
I guess it depends on who and how many you follow - and if you feel obligated to read everything, or just what happens to be happening at the moments you check in.
kenrg 2 years ago
I was only following 40 or so good friends, but they have a lot going on in their lives... It just became too much to follow. Plus I got used to being out of the loop when being overseas, and now that I'm headed back, I've just twitter on the back burner permanently.
qiranger 2 years ago
Well stated. Well, up till you said "You suck, man! You suck!" :-)

kenrg 2 years ago
I see twitter as "public texting." It is rather useful when planning a group event. It definitely has a place in our "connected" world. That same article (and cover graphic) appeared in the News & Review. I think schools need to have a class called "relevancy" in which students learn their place in the world... and how important it is, or isn't, to share mundane details of one's life. Like eveything else, twitter is what you make it. That is what the author is missing.
NorCalCorsello 2 years ago
The lack of relevance in the modern world... Now there's a great topic for a NorCalCoresllo vlog!

Back in the day when I was in college the big thing was making journalism a profession like doctor, lawyer, etc and I don't think those folks who bought into that are handling the death of msm and newpapers very well now...
jrsnyderjr 2 years ago
The thing is, there's still a place for in-depth reporting and analysis that the average person doesn't have the time to do for themselves. But if all they give us is crap, hey, we can do that without 'em!
kenrg 2 years ago
Had a bright young guy working for me a few years ago just graduating from Walter Cronkite School of Journalism here and interned at The Arizona Republic (bleech) online and it was pretty weird experience. We talked about it.
Ha! I RT this on Twitter and go look at my twitter page and see @gsnyder retweeted it. I know he must've watched it and that's proof twitter can connect different orbits in unsuspecting ways!
jrsnyderjr 2 years ago
Journalists are a dime a dozen. GOOD journalists who can dig deeper and tell us something that isn't rumour or gossip are worth their weight in gold. Journalists who can spell and write grammatically correct are also very nice to have! But NEWS as such - ie. Something we don't already know - is very good to get from the internet community as well. THEN we can go check out what "real" journalists have found out about it. Latest case, the Air France accident.
Marihani 2 years ago
How 'does' one really explain Twitter, JrSynderJr? How does one explain Kenrg? Why can't Kenrg can't explain it in 140 characters (15 seconds)? It is 'neat' to see you guys on your blogs, youtube, twitter, etc - it does make the world interconnected. Is maybe the only real way to look at twitter, youtube, etc by looking at it long term - 10 years from now, we'll still be checking blogs, youtube videos, and tweets - Who's looking out for the 'quiet time' of contemplation?
ournationalspace 2 years ago
ah my friend ons, you have struck the note I was trying to hit well over a year ago in my vid "Online Social Networking." It can't be totally explained but I've been convinced that 10 years from now the community we have formed will still be around. We'll be reading each others' life stories we;ve e-published!
I say this because not only do I have several relatives scattered across the world online with me and friends from the old bbs days and the 90s sub to me here and follow me on Twitter
jrsnyderjr 2 years ago
I think print journalist are just angry with online social media. Paper can not keep up with "the internets". When the average Joe or Jane can recreate (verbatim) most of the articles that journalists put out their, it takes away the importance of 'the press'. Print media needs to really take advantage of social media and experience it before they bash it. We need the press for important news, no more of this "did you see the dress she was wear" 'news'
Zed2six 2 years ago
So true - When all the "official media" gives us is gossip, what are we to do besides create our own media!
kenrg 2 years ago
That's a great point! I've stopped watching CNN years ago because they were hung up on the cult of celebrity every 20 minutes. So now we shun the popular media, spread the news ourselves and they have a problem with it. They need to really get bent. In 140 characters or less, of course!
anakin1814 2 years ago
Very very true! Many people see only the self-indulgent "woke up" tweets when they first join...I surely did. But the chorus of tweets introducing me to phrases I love to read, links I'd never have found, viewpoints I hadn't considered, news that mattered to me, etc. long ago changed my perspective. I'm glad one of those useful links led me here to your well-articulated vlog, Ken! Now back to that Kinks/Stones classic album investigation... :)
musosf 2 years ago
I love that we had that Kinks/Stones/Beatles discussion on Twitter while this was uploading. Perfect example of a positive use of it that I didn't put in the vlog. To an uninvolved bystander that discussion may have seemed vapid, but it made me happy.

We all do the occasional "Late for work" tweet - but on the balance, the people I follow give me good content. If you expect every tweet to be genius, it'll suck.
kenrg 2 years ago
Twitter is amazing. But right, it's all about the company you keep, just like here on YouTube, etc etc.
fallofautumndistro 2 years ago
Exactly - But non-twittering writers keep churning out these hit pieces and quite obviously didn't bother to create an account and give it a try from the inside first.
