understand that when an artist creates something its because it something they FEEL or an image that haunts or a fascination with something..its hard to explain. If they create merely to please an audience, they are not being honest with themselves and are selling out. For instance i will never paint anything just because I want people to like it. I paint from my soul. Yes MB has alot of funding to do what he does, but just because you do not understand it, do not judge it. who are you to judge
maybe the people here that do not understand his imagery should look into the myths and the symbols that are used..the cycle is not about merely random images, EVERYTHING that is shown serves a purpose to tell a story that is usually very ancient, He just uses a more modern metaphor. I think Its rather silly when an IT tech is talking of art and that it is up to the veiwer to decide if it is art or not ( based on a post from another video) I guess if that person were an artist they would

icremaster is an allegorical representation of the masonic iniation rites and a art piece that celebrates the brootherhood network of secret societies that control the world. Barney uses all the occult symbolism doubleheaded eagle crystler building he is in on the world domination. . Barney is a satanic mason who embraces the empire that rules the world, even sadly the art world.
promulgate the values of the upper class with your "ART" and you will have the same elite appreciating themselves as an audience while congratulating you with your brilliance.
If you decide to ignore the craft of an established art form (filmmaking) and expect the audience to forgive, what real filmmakers understand as second nature to the medium, it comes as know surprise when people complain that you must hang your hat of excuses on some kind of ambiguous notion that the meaning is all wrapped up in a mysterious mystical art experience. Good filmmakers are highly expressive visually & manage to unlock profound emotional experiences. he should stick with photography
For one he is not a photographer. For two, this has nothing to do with film making. You sound bitter, "Anglo Saxon Art for the Bourgeoise" come on .that is an utterly rediculous statement.this is about myth, He pulls imagery and symbols from ALL cultures..just because he is white you assume its "Anglo Saxon Art"..silly.I dont even know why i am responding but that is one of the most idiotic things i have ever heard. I suggest you leave the subject of art alone, because you obviously dont get it
You respond to my comment because you cant ignore it completely.
This is filmmaking simply because it is a film. And especially if you are lending a hand to defend its merit by claiming the use of myth and symbolism from all cultures. That's what FILMS DO!!! Although good films utilize other aspects of film making that are missing in this film - like a strong narrative, appropriate pacing, impactful editing, professional cinematography.
Those elements in this work are horribly executed.
i completely agree with you. Good films not only use these elements of symbolism, they ensure that these aspects are COMMUNICATED to their audiences. That's what art is about - communication. Even if the concepts are abstract, some form of digestion should take place for thinking to happen on the part of the audience.
Of course everybody's level of accessibility is different, but i can't stand ppl just praising this w/o any understanding of it.
A muscle with origin from the internal oblique and inguinal ligament, with insertion into the cremasteric fascia and pubic tubercle, with nerve supply from the genitofemoral nerve, and whose action raises the testicle. In the male, the muscle envelops the spermatic cord and the testis; in the female, it envelops the round ligament of the uterus.

100 thumbs up
it is just a waste of time, there is not a minimum of plot, neither you can say it has a bit of educational content, but fuck, how come there is a bunch of people claiming that this is art? i just dont get them
try hundreds of thousands of dollars. there are only 10 copies of each video created, so only wealthy art collectors and museums can afford to have them.
Hi. The problem is that the art video should be distributed as the movies, in DVD and the artistst should be paid with royalties. I think that those artists that refuse to make a large distribution of their art works on video of photo supports are no artists but only dealers. Art is for every one to be seen. marta massaioli
@martamassaioli Art can be for everyone, if it's the artist's intention. It's the artist's prerogative. Artists may only be discredited if their art is not received by anyone but the artist.
I haven't seen any other Greenaway stuff, but I've viewed The Baby of Macon, and what i've seen of the Cremaster films gives me a similar feeling. It's like the massive, stately unfurling of the most gorgeous trailer ever. I know this is reductive, but i can't help but appreciate Cremaster on this level having not experienced the work in its entirety. I frequently find that I just like to appreciate the cinematic piquedness of a strange turn on its own and "get" it that way.
I agree with cityzenart. The most stupid thing people usually do is to compare contemporary art works with children. Its basically like comparing Beethoven to 8 year old learning the piano. Its not comparable. And it reflects the educational level of the individual.
One may dispute Matthew Barney's work for being incomprehensible, but it is made to watch and read the explanations at the same time. And think. Then some things make sense.
Matthew Barney is using a host of visual materials and symbols from the Dadaists to Beuys to Spike Jonez. Archtypes and superstition... Allegory and religion. An 8 yr old can't make it and I assure you it's not any artist's intention to have their work described that way. AND I still don't know what his films mean entirely. God Bless.

Matthew Barney's movies, sculptures from vaseline, etc. are the symbol of the bankruptcy of 'high art???' or modern art, or making something that my 8 year old could make in art class and saying, 'if you just look deep enough...You can see your reflection in a puddle or a lake, but I'd rather go swimming in a lake that actually has depth and meaning. Matthew Barney's films give the impression of depth, but if you try to swim in them, you're only going to get mentally dirty.
I find his entire work utterly fascinating. Every single time I get back to it I find it more stimulating, it is a very complex universe layered and dense with a variety of meanings not immediately accessible. It grows on you. Pure art that requires you to be open from preconceptions because you are entering his own universe. Listening to him explaining his work is incredibly stimulating too and it is part of the process towards appreciating it.
Research the creamaster muscle, research androgeny, sexuality and the choice of sexuality, research formalism, research human anatomy, research his theory behind the field and restraint symbol, symbolism, research color association and its culturl impact.
Yes, everything I actually like. All of those statements are elitist judgements. LIke kitsch; what right have you to declare kitsch? Humor and taste are a matter of the individual, not of a pompous elitist society. I love Matthew Barney because he uses all of these within the high art community, without most of them passing judgement!
Please people, are any of you working artists? Are any of you knowledgeable in art history? His films arnt accessible to the random pedestrian. They are for the art community. The man makes high art. He knows what he is doing. Dont shoot him down because you cant understand what message he is conveying.
Yet, as a working artist, I think it is absurd to argue that we must swallow whole the solipsism of the man because his films are "high art."It has, art historically, been a long time since such distinctions were of any value.
Matthew Barney is a solipsist? I didn't know that (im not being sarcastic either, I didn't know that). I am merely trying to say that just because his work isn't as accessible as a Velasquez, doesn't mean that it is not "art" or "good art". Whether in one or anothers opinion that his work is "good or bad at" is debatable. But because people out there value his work, it is art.
come on people, how sick is this?! Barney's work is really overrated!!! Some parts of the Cycle are pure dream, but 5 movies,3 hours long each-one, with absolute no-meaning? That's toooo much! Ever heard about David Lynch Syndrohome? Not everything you touch turns into gold just because a few times you were a genius!
agreed. i think its about too excessive and indulgent. if you're going to make 5 cycle movie, you might as well engage your viewer in a meaningful story. its beautiful to look at but its an awfully long dream .
