It doesnt really matter how much it cost because the money is already spent, Get over it. Have any of you seen these things up close? With a properly trained pilot these things are awsome.
Hey, you didn't post any video in your montage of this thing having a in-flight failure of the tilt-rotor and hurtling into the ground with 30 devil dogs on board. A waste of time, money and Marine lives on a useless system.
Truly, I am impressed, about how stable it seems, how strong it also seems, and it's range and service ceiling too. Plus also it's cargo space and weight. But I would like to see it on action. I mean, that thing is huge, and RPG wouldn't have trouble finding that shit! Still, you know it might be a succes. But we'll see.
I imagine the value of the V-22 would be a much higher speed advantage over helicopters. At least you would think so for the reason its rotors can be pitched fully forward.
You didn't calculate CPI when using your figures; in 1987, $80 mil in 2007 money was $44 mil, and in 2000, $80 mil today was $67 mil. Also consider tech. upgrades, etc. I wouldn't call that the biggest swindle in history, but I'm not saying that gov't contractors don't overprice either.
"Currently" being the functional word. The Pentagon was to purchase them at a unit cost of $36 mil in '87. Then it was $61 mil in 2000 (got that off Boeing's website). $74 mil in 2004 (also off Bong's wesbite). $80 mil in 2007 (off AFOTEC). Gee, do we see a pattern for one of the biggest defense contractor swindels yet?
Several of these comments are misguided. The V-22 is designed for one engine operation; the proproters are connected together with a driveshaft. The cost is less than $100 million. There are many places to get more accurate information, consider doing some research.
Hey, only $100 plus million per each Osprey. That is worth it, ain't it? The Marines are spending 70% of their acquisition budget on the Osprey. Not a good plan. Hell, the F22 is only slightly more expensive and is world's ahead in technology and capability. I really hope no more Marines get killed for the Osprey. 82nd Airborne vet.
im going to fly this in iraq soon but im worried becsaue this doesnt have a good history.even pentagon says.and it took more deaths than a typical black hawk transport heli.
im going to fly one in iraq soon.we were told that its goin and i have to go.but im scared becasue the V-22 has a pretty bad history.even pentagon said its not good so there thinking of taking it out.and this plane/heli is 5.5billion dollars.
It is a death trap. It won't fly like a regular plane if one engine goes, it won't glide like a regular plane if both engines go. It won't autorotate like a helicopter if both or one engine goes. So...if an engine goes, you are dead. As are many, stupid thing crashes all the time. Flies like a white elephant.
too bad none of our helo support gunships can keep up with it. that's really great thinking guys. we get our troops there, quickly with no fire support.
This thing is so huge and bulky, i dont see how there is now way it will suffere big casualties even from little unguided RPG when it is dropping troops off and what not. Its a great damn idea... and its cool our country can do things like this... but. ... i think this plane should have remained at the drawing board.
I love this thing. I love that it was going to be dropped, but the vision of it's mission was properly absorbed and yeah... You know the spirit if America is alive when you look at the fact that a great idea took a couple of hard punches and didn't give up. This tool has no equal on earth.
the V-22 is in service; the MV-22 is being deployed at 3 squadrons strength by the Marines in Iraq and the Air Force has 4 CV-22 aircraft for it's SpecOps missions already
I've always liked this aircraft. Just incredible! Not exactly Startrek technology, but its damn good. I did hear about there being a few crashes. My Step Dad flies conventional helicopters n my dad flew also, so i do hear of things. Its not in service yet though.
I'll try. Some aircraft are specifically designed (by requirements) to be able to do this, some are not (depending on the vintage and defining specification). Doesn't mean they "can't" do it, just that there are no requirement to do so. The one I'm supporting now has no requirement for this maneuver, and to my knowledge has never been demonstrated officially. All I was saying is I'm pleased to actually see it demonstrated as I didn't get the opportunity to see it person. Anything else??
Oh yeah! I had the honor of being there for first flight. Got to see it fly as an airplane for the first time. Was on the USS Wasp with it. Sadly...lost 7 colleagues in 1992. My only regret is not having actually been on it as a passenger. It's an awesome aircraft. It'll serve our Marines and Airmen well!!
EXCELLENT!!!! As someone who worked on this aircraft program for 15 years as an engineer (almost from it's inception) I knew it was designed to do a 360 degree roll...but never had the opportunity to see it in flight testing. AWESOME!!! Thanks!

They do not currently cost that much.

The TIME magazine put the cost of each V-22 at $119 million.
Maybe YOU should do some research.

Oddly enough, the fastest helo is the CH-53.... that's not arment support.
Another prob is it can't come in hot like the H-46 or the Hueys.

good thing technology caught up on the osprey.
the reason it crashed so many times, that the technology was too advanced to be understood.
like the space shuttle.
engines too advanced that there is always a chance of a launch delay.
it should outlast the huey and the blackhawk.
