@JazzVideoGuy heavens no. Took about a week off and on. It's long but worth the watch just because of the amount of areas it touches on. It's also got great interviews with a lot of artist themselves.
Come to think of it, a JazzVideoGuy take on Art Pepper is sorely needed. I've played sax for 30+ years and somehow Art Pepper flew under my radar for too long a time before I discovered how incredible he was. Maybe some JVG fans haven't heard enough about him either?
I've been using Netflix for almost a year now and had no idea there was sucha wealth of jazz there. Thank you so much for this particular head's up; looking forward to the next one.
@pacree hmm... now I can't find any of the pieces you recommend. I'm in Canada; I wonder if there isn't some copywrite BS going on preventing Netflix from providing this stuff in Canada?
@pacree I'm so sorry hear that! This whole copyright thing has gotten totally out of hand. Most of the time its the big corporations trying to exert their power 'cause the artists, musicians and filmmakers rarely get a taste.
Hey this was a great idea for a series of videos. I'd like to add that beyond streaming, there is an even larger selection of jazz videos that you can get on DVD from Netflix (or Qwikster when they split their operations). I've only seen 'Round Midnight with Dexter Gordon this way, but there are a lot of concert DVDs as well. Thanks for the consistently high quality videos!
@ZenSawTrombone I'm sure there are even more Jazz options on Netflix DVD. I've become too lazy to do the DVD thing, though, streaming works better for mel And Netflix won't be going out of business anytime soon. They messed up a bit, but streaming VOD is here to stay.
Cool, I want to watch some of this stuff. The Mingus is good, I like the Monk documentary "Straight No Chaser" even if it's a bit disjointed. I have also a good documentaries on Bud Powell, Anita O'Day, Michel Petrucciani, Gerry Mulligan and a few others. Interesting stuff.
I can also highly recommend the Ken Burns Jazz Documentary. I just love the scenes and pictures from New York in those films. It always makes me want to play, but, unfortunately, when it's on TV, it's streamed around 1 o'clock until 2 o'clock at night. I wonder why it's always that late, because there's that time on TV (at least in German TV) where there's just junk to see. Instead of this stupid talk shows they could stream more music, documentaries as well. I guess, people would watch it

"Adventures in the Kingdom of Swing" is a pretty good documentary on Benny Goodman. Has a lot of interview with his bandmembers.

@pacree The selection on Netflix Canada is generally awful, it's mostly cheap direct-to-dvd videos

Just watched the Art Pepper doc on Netflix, which led me to read the book "Straight Life." I recommend both to EVERYONE.
