The Americans trying to bad mouth the Netherlands, and Amsterdam in particular are the uneducated, omni-fearing usa indoctrinated rednecks who never even been here (which we'd like to keep that way). I'm Dutch, I have bin in Amsterdam, and i can tell you: it's just a beautifull old city (and ofcourse you can get there drugs and other stuff, but you can also get that in New York or Paris, so why are you Americans not scared of those citys!? serious: stop hating the Netherlands, people are always only pointing out the bad things. @ITZDAMOBB ofcourse they'll go for tourists, that's always the case in big cities. Because tourists are less likely to go to the police and are often less aware of potential threats. You're lucky the Dutch police speaks good English though, try to go to the police in cities like Rome or Barcelona, if you don't speak their language, you are absolutely screwed..

we've actually got relatively less weedsmokers and harddrug users than the USA and the countries around us. Combined with a lot less prisoners/crime it saves us a lot of money to create a well organized society. The major problem with our druglaws are the foreign drugtourists and smugglers who come here to take advantage of it. That's why they want to introduce a weedpass exclusively for the locals (which will only make crime worse). Surrounding countries legalizing weed is the only solution :)

But the police tolerate its recreational use in coffee shops as the premise is that they can keep people from the really destructive drugs by allowing people controlled access to weed (a 'soft' drug). Also, the fact that it pumps so much money into the Dutch economy doesn't hurt either.

I'm born and raised in the Bijlmer and never been a victim of witness of crime. It used to be bad in the '70s and '80s, but since they demolished many of the huge flats and many companies set up their businesses there, it has become a wonderful place to live. If you are a criminal ripping off another criminal, you usually end up dead. But normal civilians and tourists do not have to be afraid of getting murdered. Amsterdam is a relaxed place. As long as you are not actively looking for trouble, no trouble will find you.

About the PVV: Most people don't take Geert Wilders too seriously, in fact he's not that populair anymore. Keep in mind that, altough they won last year, they still only won 30% of all votes. Not the biggest party here!

@MrWereldOorlog je bedoelde natuurlijk aanhoudingen. Het zijn er iets minder dan 90 maar je komt in de buurt. Het gaat echter hier wel degelijk om heel veel openbare dronkenschap. Mensen die na een nacht in de cel gewoon naar huis gaan. Niets schokkens aan. Er zitten ook mensen bij die met te veel alcohol op achter het stuur gingen en voor een tweede test naar het bureau moeten. Dan wordt je ook aangehouden.

Lets just say Amsterdam is like any major city in the world.
Lots of fun most of the time, but has enough dark alleyways with some streets that are known to have crime in them occasionally.
Its safe but, don't go wandering around sketchy places at night because you can still get robbed (or worse) like you could be anywhere else in the world.
And the thing about not seeing police? Wtf? I see them everywhere all the time when I'm there but at least they are just doing their job right. xD

I pointed out that whilst the NL has a recent history of open mindedness, it must still remain self-critical. Perceptions abroad about open laws etc have lead many to consider NL as a place free from the plights of prejudice . This is of course untrue, thats why I pointed out the PVV being the 3rd largest party in NL. The fact that PVV supporters jumping in to defend them proves my point. we've actually got relatively less weedsmokers and harddrug users than the USA and the countries around us. Combined with a lot less prisoners/crime it saves us a lot of money to create a well organized society. The major problem with our druglaws are the foreign drugtourists and smugglers who come here to take advantage of it. That's why they want to introduce a weedpass exclusively for the locals (which will only make crime worse). Surrounding countries legalizing weed is the only solution :)

But the police tolerate its recreational use in coffee shops as the premise is that they can keep people from the really destructive drugs by allowing people controlled access to weed (a 'soft' drug). Also, the fact that it pumps so much money into the Dutch economy doesn't hurt either.
Sorry about my earlier comment I should have clarified that it is illegal. Nevertheless it is tolerated and even widely accepted.

I'm born and raised in the Bijlmer and never been a victim of witness of crime. It used to be bad in the '70s and '80s, but since they demolished many of the huge flats and many companies set up their businesses there, it has become a wonderful place to live. Just don't go looking for trouble over there, or you will surely find it. Peace!

If you are a criminal ripping off another criminal, you usually end up dead. But normal civilians and tourists do not have to be afraid of getting murdered. Amsterdam is a relaxed place. As long as you are not actively looking for trouble, no trouble will find you.

About the PVV: Most people don't take Geert Wilders too seriously, in fact he's not that populair anymore. Keep in mind that, altough they won last year, they still only won 30% of all votes. Not the biggest party here!
