These years for her were amazing, she had a new image, this more whispery voice and the songs on butterfly were some of her deepest and best written songs
I actually prefer Mariah's whispery singing voice. The belting just isn't there anymore. A reviewer of Charmbracelet pointed out that in the last part of 'Through The Rain' you can tell that some of the vocals are clipped together in different takes. I listened to it and it's true. I think what happened is Tommy M. overproduced her vocals on the first couple of albums and she just burnt her voice out trying to stay true to her first album.
all songs for all artists on cds are pieced together but their not pieced together live and u can see she still got it wen she performes live...look at her live performances of through the rain..and during #1s album was her raspiest time
@1dreamlover1 very true, a song is almost always recorded in pieces with a ton of tracks, background tracks are usually stacked. Nobody really sings songs straight thru in the studio anymore, maybe back in the day when technology wasn't likei t is now
@mermaidofsuburbia I believe it could have done that to her recorded vocals in the early years .... but let's be honest she was flawless and soaring vocally amazing during those years when she performed live either on tour or TV. And those could not be clipped at all. What it's true and u mentioned is that she just burnt her voice and I could feel that by listening carefully to how it sounds from album to album.
@mermaidofsuburbia Very interesting way of putting things, however, any artist who records, does several takes, and clip the best parts of each take, that's what the engineers do, to make the vocals 'perfect'. ..I've heard her sing through the rain live, so its not like she cant sing it.
Great performance no doubt about it but there were moment where one could tell her chest voice just didnt sound the samee anymore ... certains notes she was not doing as effortelessly as she used to. This is the early stages of Mariah's vocal changes as we know them now.
She answers all questions that she's been asked very lady like and eloquently. I admire her.

This was the period when her voice started to deteriorate, she's struggling with the high notes here.

@mermaidofsuburbia Thing is she duplicated the vocals on her album live and even better sometimes so i don't think thats the case
