Yes this probably is not the best performance for the song and musicians, but if they worked on the arrangement more i think it would have sounded better.
is it just me, or does anyone else think herbie hancock is absolutely terrible in this video?! I mean listen to 1:38, 4:40, 6:30....... bloody hell.....
@1xXATRUMXx1 I do! I love rhapsody in blue... I just find it a shame that herbie's playing was, well, pretty embarrassing - it doesn't do the music justice.
I dont' think this video is that great. They both seem like they're limited to what they have to perform. With that much skill and experince, I mean they holding it back too much. Im pretty sure since they have the time to practice, they could probably came up with something great and still make it work. But I don't know, maybe it just the peice, the aritst holding back though, it more of trying not to mess up for one another.
I know!!! It bugs the hell out of me to hear recordings like this. They are wonderful performers and did an excellent, excellent job, but if your not going to play the whole piece and as intended, may as well not play it at all. More than others this piece because one part leads to the next and the piano has such a very very important part in leading it
Dogbreath19, it was actually commissioned as a jazz piano concerto, so yeah, big difference; piano should be prominent. That's why there's massive solo sections and why the piano part is so epic.
This is a truly magnificent song, however I have to say that some of of the chord clashes and out of time sequencing is a bit too much impros/mistakes for this style of jazz classical in my oppinion. I still liked most of the song :P
I'm impressed. This is at par with Bernstein's. My only complain would be that the focus was more on the piano, I didnt feel there was importance given to the clarinet, the cymbals, the drums, and other instruments that make the Rhapsody in Blue truly magnificent in any way that it should be interpreted. I'm impressed with the improvisations.
Attended the sold-out concert held last night at New Jersey Performing Arts Center. It was a wonderful experience. Great improvisation. The audience went wild at the end and the encore was great.
I just saw them play this piece at Mann Center with Philadelphia Orchestra. The arrangement allowed them to improvise for perhaps ten minutes. Their collaboration was magnificent. I hope the performance was recorded since I do not think it could be reproduced. I will never hear "Rhapsody" the same way again. It was truly historic. Bobboloui.
Saw them perform this and some other stuff at Royal Albert Hall last weekend. Awesome atmosphere. You can tell the two of them are having a whale of a time throughout. They hugged each other after every piece - it's a curious partnership, but it's produced some amazing results.
4:40 to 4:45 is incredibly sloppy (and what is that note at 6:03?)...having this played by two pianos doesn't really add anything, especially in this truncated arrangement. If you want to hear Gershwin reinvented, listen to Marcus Roberts play the Gershwin Piano Concerto with Seiji Ozawa conducting.
3.30 ohhh yum

they made the woodwinds too "noticeable", i rather prefered the piano to be "too noticeable"

ugh the piece has been hacked to bits and doesn't really showcase the prominence of the piano.

It's actually a rhapsody, not a concerto.
Big difference.

why the hell do they cut it though, is this arrangement for two pianos just short? or is it just cut for T.V. purposes?

tv purposes

At a guess I would say for TV purposes and time limits.

The sound quality for this is pretty good compared to others.
Yes, it did have a few mistakes...
but not everything can be perfect.
& watching Lang Lang play makes me laugh xD
He's genius, puts emotion into his work & makes it fun..
but its just so funny
