I once had a flat that backed right onto the East Coast Main Line, that bloody Rail Grinder train was out there for half the night making a god awful racket! The sparks and stuff were well cool though.
I knew it was on the maintenance side of things. Trouble is they have so many that all look alike it's kinda hard to interpret which train does what lol.
It's a maintenance train. It maintains the structure of the lines and power cables overhead. I've seen these around quite a few times. I believe they work for Network rail. I may be wrong, but I do know they are for maintenance.
Much more impressive when they are working, with sparks showering off the rail head. In Australia they couple in a water tanker in the middle so the operators can do their own fire fighting as well!! I think we have mostly Plasser und Thuerer machines in Australia BTW.
@lee2217 the train effectively grinds the top of the rails off to improve the profile of the track to allow for better track and more effective running. over time the rails become flatter wit the height in effect moving to the sides as it is onstantly ran over by trains and to stop this problem they use grinders such as the one in the clip to sort it out. hope this answers your question
It's quite a beast isn't it? It turned up a few years ago when I was filming at Beck Foot near Shap, and I didn't know what the hell it was. I thought I was seeing things!
i used to live next to a railway and sometimes when I couldn't sleep I would wait for this weird train that made a loud hissing sound as it went past ,I think it was used to "defrost" the track because it only apeard during winter
101 times worse than a 442, such a shame the track don't buckle under hot weather anymore then that would stop these sods welding all the track up, this is why you no longer get the fab clicketyclack sound of any train.
@Trainbuff2008 Sadly, that clickity-clack is the sound of wear, tear and damage, too. That quiet whir you now hear is the sound of progress and refinement. You don't hear near as many "flat" wheels any more, either.
@TheMrBlinx wheel flats are caused by brakes jamming on or driver breaking too hard not the gaps in the sections of rail that there used to be. you can bearly hear a train comming down the track now i used to live near sectioned track and used to love the sound the trains that past my house and you used to know which way they were going as the southbound direction was continueous rail.
@Trainbuff2008 Me too. I lived just feet away from a major railroad, and I heard it every night, but it is because of wear and tear on both wheels and rails that caused 1/4 mile lengths of welded rail th be installed. The more shock and vibrations there is, the worse the wear. Go out and look at sectional rail lengths, just where the joints are, and you will SEE WHY they decided to change things.
I like that rail grinder! Not often you see them around! I wonder what British Rail Class number it is but hoppers, wagons, tankers and Network Rail MPVs don't have a class number either... It'd be good if you could find out when and where grinders are on duty! :) Thanks for uploading this!
I've seen this loco an the ECML in 2007 when they were reparing the lines near the selby junction I don't know what it's called but I think it has the same job as the old Network Rail HST and the class 31 which is to test the track for faults.
Errrm...help I'm scared! That 'thing' would actually freak me out if I saw it for real. Then again, I may have seen one in the sidings outside York on the way to Northallerton...definitely think it was the same 'thing'. Seems like Network Fail / Notwork Fail doing what they do worst to me... great video 5*s
I've just seen this thing (or something very similar to it) in action whilst I was walking the dog. 7pm-ish, between Chesterfield & Sheffield, going North.
as the rail profile wears causing wheels to hunt [side to side movement]
or where theres been wheelslip causing serations /rough track
the speno travels at night on closed tracks 20 or so computer controled grind wheels contact the track and traveling around walking speed it reprofiles the rails to as new shape
I saw this train in a siding, well I think its this, when I visited my uncle who lives in Tonbridge. He lives on a road right next to the line, just down the road from the station. It was either in August 2004 or August 2006, i'm not sure..
It's a Speno RPS 32-2 Rail Grinder. You very rarely see these things during the day but tend to see these things late at night so this is a rarity. 5* and one for the favs. Thanks for posting!
it a Rail Grinder, DR 79221 - DR 79226, based at Eastleigh. it grinds the top of the rails for better traction

Because of the weights and pressures on the track the railhead distorts, this machine re-grinds the railhead profile.
