  • 1986 .... A good year :)

  • I played this excessively when I was around 11-12 years old. Whenever the music at 04:17 appeared, I got scared shitless and lost shortly after.

  • like ryu and ken's grandfathers

  • grief

  • i want to hug these 9 poor people who hadnt the chance to play this...

    poor bastards

  • couldn't get past purple belt after having it for years. Maybe got brown belt once. I was better at Way of the Exploding Fist. Probably in the world's top 3 players at that.

  • Hmm the music is very similar to "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" by Ryuichi Sakamoto.. Remember playing this as a kid :)

  • you are a god damn genious!!!!

  • haha

  • Hahahahahhhh XD...

  • siempre pense que al final peleabas con el viejo ql

  • FYI

The orignal of this track is "Clock On 5 - Theme From Furyo "

  • @Flexipop76

That one uses parts of "Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence" too, so it came later.

  • @McLarenMercedes i was about to say somethig like that until i saw your comment, your right

  • Dear Karate Master,

how can i defend in the game? I forgot. Isn't it just moving backwards?

  • best game ever

  • What I meant to say is that I love Hubbards music on this one and Ninja :)

  • This game was a storm of excitement when i was a kid. I remember how happy i was when progressed to brown belt. :)

  • The karatecas looks like Bret Hart with short hair. xD

Played a lot this in late eighties.

  • FINISH HIM!

  • I loved this game......and still do!

  • Use to love this game back in the day. Awesome times.

  • Thank you for that video, it's so much of my memories!

  • dobre kiedyś grałem

  • hehhe

  • great player thats for sure!

  • I love it when he breathes and wipes his hand on his clothes.

  • I still remember most of these games on the arcades lol

  • ahhh. the first thing we used to do when we put this on was turn the volume up. it may sound shit now, but back in the day it was fucking awesome. good ole rob halford. anyone know what he's involved with these days?

  • @54spatula

Yes. Rob Halford is the singer from Judas Priest today. But I think you mean Rob Hubbard. ;) I am not sure but I think he is working for Electronic Arts today.

  • @DerSchmu ha ha ha. yeah rob hubbard. a real talent from back in the day.

  • @DerSchmu

You can find Rob Hubbard at Facebook, he made the music for Assassins Creed Brotherhood a few time ago...

  • @DerSchmu well played good sir

  • @54spatula I couldn't disagree with you more. It sounds amazing even now. In fact, I've been hunting for this song for quite some time now.

  • @54spatula It doesn't sound like shit even for today's standards, it just sounds awesome and will always do...

  • @54spatula lol@ Rob Halford

  • @54spatula awesome it is...still...

  • @54spatula Actually, it sounds even better today!

  • One of my first games for the c64 - oh lovely memories....

  • Wow. I really never knew anything came after New York. Remember the flying stuff though. Could it be a bad pirated version?

  • @HotBlastCarver

The flying stuff was in the sequel "International Karate +"

  • @DerSchmu

I remember something about a bull?

  • @leifmp

The Bull was in the older game "The Way Of The Exploding Fist"

I have a video from that game on my channel too.

  • @DerSchmu Actually the bull was in Karate Champ not Way of the exploding fist, I don't think that one had bonus stages if memory served.

  • @HotBlastCarver

Well there's IK and then there is IK+.

  • Atari & Amiga game !

  • @2:48 He punches the red guy in the nuts! LOL

  • love them sound effects!

  • someone help me out lads..

I remember another 2 IK games-one of them was played in new york at nightime, same setup as IK+ and bonus levels included ninjas jumping over fences or something.

The other one was the best IK ever and I thought it was IK3 but never found any info on the web.

The levels scrolled from left to right and you had to defeat enemies in order to advance, some of them had hockey masks on them and it was a hard game and pretty sure it was an IK game...

  • @ggerely

You mean the games "Fist 2" and "Fist +"

The games were similar to Int.Karate but have nothing to do with them.

The first Way Of The Exploding FIst cames 1985. Internation Karate (86) was a Rip-Off from the Fist game.

  • @DerSchmu

Thanks mate, thats the one, just watched yer longplay on that one, fair play to ye.

  • @ggerely

Yea sounds like Fist 2. That game had great music

  • I remember i used to hook up 2 5 1/4 floppy drives together, put tape over a hole on the disk and you could pirate games.. lmao.. you could even record off the back side of TM games, lol..

  • @tadek7xp I have still C-64 :) games , 2 joystiks, tape recorder and Philips two color :)

  • This was kickass back 20yrs ago on the Amiga

  • Somehow I always thought you bit through all them blocks....

  • @tadek7xp

    =) Classic memories.

  • Nose xq me kede viendo este video, me imagino q en sus tiempos habra sido genial xD

  • This GAME is the LEGEND. Yes there is no graphics but it is the highly skilled gameplay ever. So, It is much more better than today's exegerrative graphics fighting games. Also the MUSIC is a LEGEND too.

  • @akumadriver street fighter 2 series is far superior to this. but this is still good.

  • Just downloaded it for my wii :D brings back some good old times

  • Bravo!

  • How do you block in this game? all i ever get is this guy holding his hand up to his face in an attempt to block, only to get knocked out anyway

Is there any point to blocking?

  • @Adropacrich2

You have to block each attack seperatly. You can't just hold back constantly

  • HUBBARD ... *sinus-nodding*

  • i remember jean claude van damme playing this in a movie if only i could remember the name of the movie.

  • @starkweather04 Bloodsport

  • Still got the original game for my 3 cmd 64 machines :)

...If I just coul get them fixed :O

  • is this tool assisted? nobody can play that good :) great nostalgic game though :)

  • Il caro buon vecchio Commodore 64.

    Quanti ricordi.

    Fantastic.

  • lol, I cannot even begin to tell you how much I used to play this game and IK+

  • Yeah, used to play this with my buddy who had an Atari Xl, then later on C64 :)

  • Das ist mein Lieblingsspiel <3

    Unerreicht bis heute!

  • I played the Atari 800 version to death when I was a kid. Absolutely loved it to pieces. There are even times when I still prefer IK over most modern post-SF2 fighters. I'm definitely downloading the Virtual Console version of this game.,,,,yeeeh!!

  • Good for me and my brother back then, switched from always fighting physically to this safer method. game greatness, music to match (said the donkey).

  • soundfx are classic! awesome.

  • I loved this game used to play it for hours

  • Notice that some of the music mutes when the sound effects are present? Good times :O)

  • is that kung fu man from mugen?

  • The 8bit sound fx was sampled from Bruce Lee - Enter The Dragon..

Easily one of the best ever C64 games.

  • to this day this is still a good game.

I prefer it in some ways to IK+ as you could actually block properly in this.

  • I played the living hell out of this game growing up. Took me forever to get to black belt.

  • The pounch and the sound effect at 1:29 is just awesome

  • yah this game has both awesome sfx and music too..

  • I am the best at this game.

  • no ur not i am

  • actually i am.

  • Comment removed

  • @markbengtsson I am!

  • they need to remake this

  • Heck, I still love the music in it.

Amazing what they pulled of with the SID chip.

  • you are very very very good !!!!

thank you for sharing this !!!!

    brgds

    rob

  • nice game! congratulations!!

    I love this game!

  • HUSSLER!!!

  • This looked like a cool little game. They could have at least did a pallet swap for the opponent for each belt. I know the C64 was at least capable of producing those few colors.

  • One of my favourite oldies along with way of the exploding fist and Karateka :)

  • I loved the hidden things you could type in on this :D

  • Hehe just downloaded it for my wii :D

Brings back the good old times ;)

  • Sound effects are very similar to ones from the movie Enter The Dragon..

  • Seems like 9 out of 10 times the flying kick drops them.

In real life this does not work. I usually end up on my arse.

  • I could never get pass brown belt!

  • Anyone reading this able to point out how you block with success in the game?

Upon holding back in the desired direction to avoid an incoming flying kick say, the guy raises his hands up in a defensive position, only to then be smashed in the face

Iv'e always quite liked this game but i may as well not bother blocking if i want it to be any fun

People reading this, have a go and see what you think concerning what seems an issue of the game

I'm puzzled why this is never mentioned tbh

  • Your supposed to press backwards as the enemy attack is launched at you.

Doens't feel like it's working that well though :(

  • hmm yes that's what i find too, ah well

  • very nice sountrack , i loved it !!!!!! i want to play it again !!

  • For ALL OF USE IT IS history ,. we loved it ......

  • how much is this game on the wii shop channel? and can this be played with the wii remote on its side otherwise good vid :D

  • This is great,.. only we didnt had a colorscreen lol.

  • This game looks like a clone of Way of the Exploding Fist IMO.. Even the gameplay's similar apart from the ranking system

  • whoa! i remeber this game.. i was about 14...i loved my c-64...i think i copied every game i had...except for conflict in vietnam. now that game i was hooked on

  • completely addicted to this game in high school

  • Wow man this guy killed it.. I think I got to the brown belt once but only from a fluke.. I wonder how I would do now but awesome great job brings back some frustrating and good memories lol

  • best fighting game ever made

  • wow ik has a ton of digitized sounds

  • OMG I LOVED THIS GAME !!!!!!!!!

  • Sidney...

  • Bis zum schwarzgurt nur 600 gegenpunkte wie herbe bis Du denn? :D

    Aber nice geiles game

  • Great game and great sound. C64 always in my heart

  • i heard this music in a dance performance the other night. it was reeeally cool, the dancers were wearing these glitter disco things and everything

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING THIS!!! i couldn't finf the music, though it's been in my head the whole time ^^

  • was ein genialer Sound .... das waren noch Zeiten ! ;_____)

  • how did it end? I never seen after black belt

I allmost had it a few times, when starting on my atari I almost started with 2 playermode and I went to finish the red one very quick I wnet emediatly to green belt, and after some time I had black belt , but I allways wondered how did it end???

  • I downloaded this from wiiware,

please help ! how do u punch or kick ?

  • I don`t know the WII control put the punch on the C64 goes with up/left or up/right. The kick was left or right and firebotton. The high kick was Up and button.

  • yeah at the wii its the up/down/left/right+ attack button.

but who do you turn ?

    -thanks

  • I think it was back and button.

  • I hadn't realised until now that this game was set in Sydney Australia with the music from the film called 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence'.

  • good thing I put it up on Wikipedia

  • Cool.

  • One of my favorite games from my childhood...

I can remember me and my brother playing these C64 games for hours on end!! Thanks so very much for the upload!!!!!

  • LOL 5:44

  • I've ruined so many joysticks over this game. Good times.

  • i got this game on my wii. the highest i ever got waz brown belt.

  • Great video. I'm slightly confused though...it reminds me of Way of the Exploding Fist for the C64...but it seems better.

Was this done after? Or was this an American version or something? Did Europe get the crappy basic version with a different name?

  • i always thought way of the exploding fist was related to IK in some way and that both games were in some way related to the karate champ coin-op. apparently not.

there was a whole lot of idea thievery in the 80's eh? :P

  • I had this song as a call-tune on my cellphone. :)

  • I had this game on the C64 and it was great. But even better was IK+, with another computer player. Remarkable is that all the moves, and there are alot, are made with just a eight direction joystick and one button. Even so in IK+ there was another move included; the split kick, which meant you could take out two opponents with one move.

  • c64 had some of the best video game music.

  • reminded me of 25 yrs ago, those were the days... I miss my c64. thanks for all these uploads. how about commando?

  • Ha ha oh those soundeffects are great. From the days when it really sounded like getting hit in the face HURT BADLY.

  • my father and i used to play this game all the time.. oh the good old day's

  • man hab ich das spiel geliebt. da sind einige joysticks drauf gegangen. nur bei summer, winter, world und california games sind mehr kaputt gegangen :)

  • Wie viele hast du denn in deiner Gamerlaufbahn geschrottet? :) ^^

  • ich hab mind. 15 joysticks geschrottet

  • The characters are so similar to way of the exploding fist im amazed there wasnt a law suit. I know Karate Champ owners took this game to court.

  • Weren't they one of the first companies to ever bring a game to court? As far as I know games were still being...well...how to say it....not very taken seriously by court? =p

  • Probably Yeh. The owners of this game lost to Data East who made karate champ and this game was taken off shelves for a while. But they went to high court and international karate won. The characters in this game are SO similar to way of the exploding fist but they didnt bother with court.

  • Id go as far to say most of the animations in this game are IDENTICAL to exploding fist.

  • I absolutely LOVED this game when I was younger. The soundtrack was awesome for a game of its time. When you started to get near black belt, the soundtrack picked up which motivated you even more. Thanks for posting this classic!!!

  • this game still looks amazing

i had it when it first came out

  • this is for the wii now in the virtual console for 500 points (5bucks)

couldnt remember to well so came to youtube to refresh my memory =)

  • Haha it might be good when it came out but it looks bad to me xD

It uses sound effects from Enter the dragon as well! From the fight between lee and the curly hair guy with the scar

  • o'hara :)

  • the music ..... It sends cold shivers up and down my spine. I fuckin love this game , i still play it like IK+ ! games like this one made my day !

  • impressive how you avoided that quick low knife at then end..

  • Loool. I played it to the black belt only once. Never could do it again.

  • The karate guy looks a bit like Elvis.

  • no way, grat 80/90 s times.... my childhood ;)

  • It is the famous SID sound. It is a C64 emulator. One example is not representative for the entire technology. Look around on the web and you will be amazed to see what a computer from 1982 can do.

  • Good old times

  • Same like on atari 800xl.

  • I preferred this to IK+.

  • Me too!

  • C64 was some better than atari 800xl.

  • i use to got commodore 64 u got msn

  • i love tis shit (emulation)

  • Thank you for posting this !!!!!

  • how awesome are the sound effects!!!

  • moi je f du karaté et sa resemble pas dutout

  • Is that the Death Star in the back of New York?

  • That big white thing? It's called a Moon. Look it up. Very interesting thing.

  • No shit kid. I was being sarcastic.

  • that brings memories, once i was at lvl 97 than commodore have hung self, i was so frustrated that i broke c64 on my knee (well parents gave me there a nice 50 hit combo on my ass) but that was 17 years ago.

    Nostalgic

  • lol :D
