It is not a kid's musical in the slightest. I actually went to see it, and if you bought tickets, they sent you all these disclaimers letting you know that it was very...racy. They even had the warnings all over the theatre. Even then, there were parents with young kids there. Apparently, hooked on phonics did NOT work for them.

Although cptgigi may be correct about deciding Willow was to become gay when Oz left, I think Joss had been planning it for a while as there was at least one big hint. - Remember gay vampire Willow when Oz and Willow were still together and things between them were good? Angel hinted that you become how your vampire self was.

the annoying thing about the show is they never portrayed a guy-guy relationship that wasn't a big joke (sorry larry). more people are fond of lesbians than gays so that would have really helped.

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to disagree and defend my Joss-man. Joss Whedon only knew that he wanted a gay character and did not specifically decide on lesbian, as he hadn't decided which of Xander or Willow would be gay. The decision was made when Seth Green (Oz) left the show, leaving Willow single.

Also, I don't think that Larry was portrayed as a joke - Xander was. Larry was always portrayed seriously, it was how uncomfortable Xander was that was the joke. Also, at the time Willow and Tara came out, people weren't overly fond of lesbians either. Joss never made their relationship about two hot girls kissing for ratings (in fact, he and Amber Benson got lots of hate mail), just two people falling in love, and that's what I love most about their relationship. Sorry for my rambly rant...

They didn't show Willow having a big discovery and deciding she's gay. I mean, she LOVED Oz, Xander and Tara. Why gay? Why not bi? Or at least have her have a big self-discovery about being gay. Having one gay relationship does not necessarily make you gay.

@chesiregirl That is definitely true. The potential fluidity of sexuality is always very complicated, so it's not impossible for Willow to have loved Oz and Xander but still be gay. That said, bisexuality is often misrepresented or dismissed as "sexual confusion" in popular media, so it would have been nice to be able to cite Willow as a healthier portrayal.
