Billy is right in using the round pupils and scale pattern under the tail to identify as non-venomous, but his conclusion of "rat snake" is way off. For anyone that is actually interested, it's a Yellow-bellied Water Snake (Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster). It's a common snake in the South and one that Billy should probably recognize in his line of work. I don't watch the show, but this definitely dramatizes something that really isn't a big deal. Any good snake man would have just grabbed it.

@ShockDoc It could be $200. I work in pest control, and I caught a black-racer that was harboring around a Wachovia Bank, and the bank was willing to pay $250. But it's generally not that expensive. This place was over an hour away from where I live, and the price would have dropped to about $50 had I not have caught the snake.

Exterminators don't know everything about animal biology/identification (though they should know how to tell water snakes from rat snakes), but we do know more than the "average Joe". A good exterminator is more concerned about how to keep the "pest" species from coming back. =-)
