Saw Whets are one of my most fave owls. when i was 9 my mum and i rescued a stunned female Barred owl from the side of tthe road. she was uninjured, just sitting there. we picked her up in a jacket and took her home and put her in a cardboard box to watch her while we called the wildlife rescue. :) she didnt try to get out of the box even, just looked up at us with her huge steal your heart brown eyes. and the inprint is like the shroud of turin! lol.

BTW, there's a pic floating around of a radio-studio window in Russia with the muddy imprint of a HUGE owl covering most of it. You could see almost every feather in the wings. I'm fairly certain I could make out the surprised expression on the face imprint, too.

Aah...such a a really darling owl...those eyes!! Yes, it was stunned & needed to be kept quiet & even kept warm by being held in a towel next to a warm body for a short time (just in case) as often they can possibly die from a brain concussion & many birds have often died depending on how hard they hit the glass.Actually, I was frightened to watch the video as I didn't know your intentions & after I saw the cracker & flyswatter....relieved & very happy it recovered & flew away. Thanks :)
@jacebigelow-Your actions were fine , you never know how a wild animal is going to react . This happens quite often - he was too disoriented to feel "terrorized" , infact you could have picked him up without issue . BTW that was a very cool ghost imprint he left on the glass !

@MrRelhed When i got the fly swatter, it was just to see if I could get him to move one way or another. I didn't know if he was stuck in the boards or what.... never meant to terrorize him. Like everyone else has said, he was stunned but surprised he didn't fly away sooner. Even after I stopped the camera, he stared at me for a long time. I eventually grew tired and went back to bed :) This deck is high up off the ground - I wasn't worried about ground predators scooping him up.
@jacebigelow im assuming that noise was him hitting the glass, so hard it stunned him into pain/shock he did not want to move for endless hours, he just needed time to recover and move on the poor thing...
@planetvicecity That noise *was* him hitting the glass. Did you watch the whole video and get to see the neat dust imprint on the glass ? If not, go check it out - near the end. Lots of people said I should have saved it, lift & transfer via large sheet of contact paper; CSI method ;) , but i never thought about it. It wore off naturally, and i think the video footage stayed on the camera about a year before i uploaded it...
After hitting a window, birds are a bit like traumatized / paralyzed and it takes a while before they move and behave in a normal way again. Btw, very cute owl...
@samanbandana actually...some Native nations believed the owl was a bringer of death, and feared that they were coming for them. i have friends/family who will not even touch an owl feather.

I doubt it would have eaten anything while it was still stunned no matter what you put there. Birds hit our windows with some frequency, unfortunately, even though we have stickers on them, and the birds never will take food or water while they are stunned.
Crashing into a glass door or window, a very common incident for daytime and nighttime birds. Because household window and door glass is (most of the time) not tinted or decorated with a bunch of stickers, the birds assume the pane is not there and that they can fly into or through the building. I've had several birds die in my yard because they flew full speed into the glass, fatally injuring or killing themselves by mistake. Fortunately, a lot of birds are only stunned and recover eventually.
I have birds fly into my glass doors also. Its not uncommon for the to be killed that way. Im sure he was probably stunned or temporarily too hurt to fly away.

So cute but fly swatted prolly wasn't the best thing haha jk jk but the bill snapping is just a sign of self defence :) o and just in case you find any other owls on ur patio you shud keep some nice juicy crickets and caterpillars handy just in case their hungry and yes I know they eat mice but insects are easier to find aaaaannnddddd if it's a baby that's the only thing you can feed it unless you de bone a mouse and chop it into shreads and then give it to him lol

@jacebigelow He'd be dead if he ate it. Owl's digestive system can only digest meat. Owls do not poop, they cough up the bones/fure/feathers in a neat pellet. If he ate a cracker his body would not be able to digest it.
Some owls only eat a specific food for their entire lives. Barn owls have been knows to only eat mice and nothing else.

All species of owls eat meat... if you put a piece of raw chicken in front of a Barn owl it won't even look at it... they only eat mice. Owls have a very unique digestive system.
You are not stupid for putting a cracker in front of it... if you've never interacted with them it's actually a decent reaction.

The reason that i didn't invite him in was because my dogs would have shredded him like a stuffed toy. I was touching him with the fly swatter, trying to get a response, because i thought he was stuck in between the boards. And you are correct - i DON'T know how to treat an owl over for dinner. I don't exactly keep mice on hand.

The only other logical explanation was I "think" owls get bored sometimes, and so they make bets with their little owl friends, and go sit on the decks of people in the area, near a window of course, and see how the human responds. Very cool, thanks for sharing. Quite a few years ago one night I had a tree outside my bedroom window and a little saw whet owl perched there. My bed was right next to the window so I was only about 2 ft. away from him. They are a cute little bird ain't they?
Okay...so the bird was really creepy in a way as it stared...almost like it was sizing you up...the window thing is amazing..and yep..a little creepy, too! LOL
OH LOL... ok so i was watching the vid/reading comments to figure out why the owl just sat there... ok i get it now... flew into the glass and got pretty dizzy i guess... silly owl. Same thing happened to me... well with a bat. I woke up to get some water and looked down out at my deck and was like AWWWW. poked it with the back of a pen to make sure it wasn't dead... it bit the pen and flew off.

Okay...so the bird was really creepy in a way as it stared...almost like it was sizing you up...the window thing is amazing..and yep..a little creepy, too! LOL

So cute!!! I just found one of these little guys in my birch tree in Truckee Ca. He acts just like this, just watches me. They're pretty laid back.

OH LOL... ok so i was watching the vid/reading comments to figure out why the owl just sat there... ok i get it now... flew into the glass and got pretty dizzy i guess... silly owl. Same thing happened to me... well with a bat. I woke up to get some water and looked down out at my deck and was like AWWWW. poked it with the back of a pen to make sure it wasn't dead... it bit the pen and flew off.

I was able to stroke a "Little" owl today.
Your so lucky to get visits from them; i live in the country and we never see one.
Though i seen one while I was in france; but it was at a long distance.. I could see its eyes and it was calling out (Well over 5 years ago now)
I would say he had flown into the glass; its obviously an owl shape. Oh and what about this biscuit that u left out? Did it eat it?

The dogs perk up at the slightest sound. Even when neighbors shut their car doors... they hear things we can't :)
